While painting in her studio, Camilla Webster told Fox News Digital she creates a distinctive American flag to “reflect a moment in time.”

“I paint more than one American flag each year that represents how I am feeling about the country in that year,” said Webster.

As a Daughter of the American Revolution, Webster says her family’s history inspired her to help share the American story through art and pay homage through every detail.

“All the American flag paintings are painted on acrylic on canvas which was developed in the U.S. Acrylic paint was very important to the American art story because it belonged to us. Europe had oil paint.”

This year’s flag painting was created in collaboration with a photograph of Andy Warhol taken by Karen Bystedt at the offices of Interview magazine in 1982.

In 2023, Art Basel brought together 277 international galleries, attracting over 79,000 visitors.

“I think people are very excited to see a contemporary experience through the Warhol lens of Americana. It was received very positively.”

Kemp leads regional workforce development initiative for SREB

0

Gov. Brian Kemp will lead a regional workforce development initiative to be undertaken by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB).

Kemp, the board’s chairman, announced Thursday the formation of a commission charged with developing lists of high-demand career pathways, priority occupations, and the credentials that will be needed to pursue careers valued by local businesses and industries.

“With the South experiencing incredible economic and population growth, one of the biggest challenges we currently face is preparing the next generation of workers for success in the ever-evolving job market,” Kemp said.

“By bringing together leaders from across industries in the South, we can better align our efforts to equip citizens with the right skills and knowledge to thrive in and beyond the classroom.”

The Commission on Career Pathways and Credentials will be made up of members from each of the SREB’s 16 states, including officials and staff from governor’s offices and state agencies, K-12 school superintendents, principals, teachers, postsecondary deans and faculty members, and business leaders.

“The goal is to bring us all together behind the north star of aligning education with the needs of our workforce,” SREB President Stephen Pruitt said. “This is complex work beyond the ability of K-12, higher education, adult education, or workforce agencies to do alone.”

The nonprofit, nonpartisan SREB was created in 1948 and is headquartered in Atlanta.

Two Americans from California are dead after being found shot in a pickup truck in Mexico, officials said.

Authorities located Gloria Ambriz, 50, and Rafael Cardona, 53, while responding to a report of a shooting in Angamacutiro in the western state of Michoacán on Wednesday night, according to Fox News affiliate, KTTV, citing the state attorney general’s office.

The couple, who were on vacation visiting family, was traveling in a black 2016 Ford Platinum pickup truck when gunmen opened fire near an intersection.

Ambriz was pronounced dead on the scene, while Cardona succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a hospital in Puruándiro, officials said.

Michoacán is listed as a “do not travel” spot in Mexico, according to the U.S. State Department.

“Violent crime – such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery – is widespread and common in Mexico,” the federal agency noted. “The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico, as travel by U.S. government employees to certain areas is prohibited or restricted. In many states, local emergency services are limited outside the state capital or major cities.”

State Senate panel recommends banning students born male from girl’s sports

0

Georgia high school and college student-athletes born male should not be allowed to participate in women’s sports, a state Senate committee recommended Friday.

If adopted by the General Assembly’s Republican majorities, the recommendation would resolve a controversial issue that has been percolating under the Gold Dome for more than two years.

A bill introduced in the legislature in 2022 called for prohibiting transgender students born male from competing in most girls’ sports. Supporters said students who went through puberty as males would have unfair advantages in speed and strength over female participants.

But the measure ran into opposition from Democrats and transgender rights activists who argued such a policy would further stigmatize transgender students, who already feel isolated and suffer a much higher suicide rate than other students.

The General Assembly ended up essentially punting the issue by passing legislation giving jurisdiction over policies governing participation of transgender athletes in school sports to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). The association’s executive committee voted unanimously in May 2022 to require transgender students to participate in school sports based on the gender identities on their birth certificates.

A nine-page report approved Friday by the Senate Special Committee on the Protection of Women’s Sport recommended repealing that delegation of authority to the association and giving it back to the legislature.

“This is an issue that should be decided by the people’s elected representatives,” the report stated.

The report went on to recommend legislation prohibiting students born male from participating in women’s sports. As envisioned by the committee, the measure would apply to public high schools, colleges, and universities in Georgia, as well as private institutions that compete against public schools in sports.

The report also suggested requiring schools that host or sponsor sporting events to provide separate changing and dressing facilities for male and female athletes based on their biological sex at birth.

Five former elite-level college women swimmers testifying before the committee in August said they were traumatized when they were forced to share a locker room with Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete born male, during the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia Tech.

The proposed legislation is likely to pass when Georgia lawmakers convene under the Gold Dome next month. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who presides over the Senate, appointed the special committee and has endorsed the bill.

Likewise, House Speaker Jon Burns, R-Newington, has pledged to make the issue a top priority for the 2025 legislative session.

Monica Pearson to keynote Brookhaven’s MLK Day dinner

Brookhaven’s ninth annual MLK Day dinner and celebration on Jan. 20 will be held at Lynwood Recreation Center, a former school that was one of the first to be a part of 1968’s integration program.

The celebration, a tribute to the so-called Lynwood Trailblazers, will include keynote speaker Monica Kaufman Pearson, a longtime newscaster, along with live performances, and special guests.

Pearson was the first woman and first minority to anchor the daily evening news in metro Atlanta, at WSB-TV, where she worked for 37 years. Pearson has won more than 33 Southern regional and local Emmy Awards for reporting, anchoring, and her “Closeups” celebrity interview show.

“Monica Pearson’s appearance as the speaker for our Brookhaven Martin Luther King, Jr. event is a testament to her enduring legacy as a trailblazer in journalism and a voice for truth and equality,” Brookhaven Council member John Funny said. “Her words honor Dr. King’s vision while inspiring future generations to continue the fight for justice and unity.”

When she retired, Pearson was honored on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives by the bipartisan delegation of the state of Georgia for her years of service to improve the lives of Georgia residents.

“Even in retirement, Monica Pearson remains unparalleled in her status as an iconic journalist. I am very excited that the City of Brookhaven and Lynwood Park Community will have the chance to hear Monica Pearson’s perspective on the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he changed the world,” Brookhaven District 1 Councilmember Michael Diaz said.

Crews cleaning up after major water main break on Boylston Street near Boston Public Garden – Boston News, Weather, Sports

0

BOSTON (WHDH) – A portion of Boylston Street flooded with ankle-deep water after a water main broke near the Boston Public Garden Friday afternoon.

The Boston Water and Sewer Commission confirmed the break near 364 Boylston Street, between Arlington and Berkeley streets. The stretch of road was blocked off by police cruisers as crews cleaned up the area.

The break impacted traffic and routines for workers and shoppers alike.

“We noticed that there was a bunch of water coming out of the ground, and slowly the pavement just started getting higher and higher, and now the streets are blocked off,” said Hannah Farley, who works on Boylston Street.

A 12-inch water main burst, which crews said was apparently due to the cold temperatures.

The Arlington MBTA station suffered some damage, as some of the water seeped in through a maintenance room ceiling and flooded the floor. T employees worked to clean up the mess.

Some nearby office workers said they were headed home early as Boston Water and Sewer employees shut off water in the area.

“Wow, this is pretty stunning. It’s flooding,” said Feng Gee, who had no running water in his office. “It’s worse than the day before — the rain day.”

Once the water receded Friday afternoon, the damage became evident. Mud was caked on the pavement.

Buckling pavement and a cavernous hole filled with stagnant water could be seen in the middle of Boylston. Crews said the hole was about 5 to 6 feet deep.

“The funny thing about Boston is people just keep on going with their daily lives. Delivery men are driving on motorcycles through the water, as seen right now, yeah, people are just kind of acting like nothing’s happening,” said Sam Lawrence, a sophomore at Emerson College.
