Smart solutions for festive security

Karen also inquired about the effectiveness of Samsung SmartTags, asking if these tags would work on her decorations and how far they could reach. The good news is that Samsung SmartTags can indeed be used on your holiday decorations. You can attach the SmartTag to any item you want to track. These devices are compatible with most recent Samsung Galaxy phones, including the Galaxy S9, making them accessible to many Android users.

As for the distance, the range of the Samsung SmartTag uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone. If the item is within Bluetooth range, you can ring it to find it or use the “Search Nearby” feature to get directions to it. If the item is out of range, other Samsung devices near the tag will anonymously locate it for you and then let you know where it is. This is done in the background and is encrypted to ensure privacy. The SmartTag does not beep when it’s out of range.

The Samsung SmartTag is compatible with almost all Samsung Galaxy phones released recently. They must have 2GB of RAM and run Android 8.0 (Oreo) or higher. So, your Samsung Galaxy S9 phones should be compatible with the Samsung SmartTag.

Apple AirTags: An alternative approach

For those considering a switch to Apple, AirTags present another viable option. Karen asked if she would have problems tracking her decorations with an Apple AirTag. While primarily designed for iOS devices, you can use it with your Android phone as mentioned in our article here, with some limitations. It uses the Find My network, and if another Apple device passes by the AirTag, the Find My network will be notified of the lost item’s location.

The AirTag does not beep when it’s out of range. However, the AirTag’s Precision Finding feature, which provides highly accurate tracking, is only compatible with iPhone 11 series and onwards. If you’re considering purchasing an iPhone, the iPhone 11 would be a relatively inexpensive option that is compatible with the AirTag’s Precision Finding feature.

1. Use motion-activated cameras: Install motion-activated security cameras to monitor your decorations. Many security cameras send real-time notifications to your phone, allowing you to act quickly if someone tampers with your property.

2. Secure decorations: Consider physically securing your decorations with zip ties, chains or locks. While this won’t deter all thieves, it can make stealing more difficult and time-consuming.

3. Light it up: Well-lit areas are less appealing to thieves. Ensure your yard and decorations are adequately lit with outdoor lights, especially in dark corners or near entry points.

4. Engage your neighbors: Create a sense of community by alerting neighbors to thefts and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. A connected neighborhood can act as a strong deterrent.

5. Mark your property: Use invisible ink or engrave your decorations with a unique identifier. If stolen items are recovered, this will help law enforcement return them to you.

6. Report thefts to local law enforcement: Always report thefts, no matter how small. Law enforcement can track patterns and increase patrols in areas with frequent incidents. Providing details may also help them recover stolen items.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The woman who in 2006 falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of raping her — making national headlines that stirred tensions about race, class and the privilege of college athletes — has admitted publicly for the first time that she made up the story.

Crystal Mangum, who is Black, said in an interview with the “Let’s Talk with Kat” podcast that she “made up a story that wasn’t true” about the white players who attended a party where she was hired to perform as a stripper “because I wanted validation from people and not from God.”

“I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t and that was wrong,” Mangum, 46, said in the interview, which was released Monday. The interview was recorded last month at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, where Mangum is incarcerated for fatally stabbing her boyfriend in 2011.

The former Duke players were declared innocent in 2007 after Mangum’s story fell apart under legal scrutiny. The state attorney general’s office concluded there was no credible evidence an attack ever occurred, and its investigation found no DNA, witness or other evidence to confirm Mangum’s story.

Despite their names being cleared, Jim Cooney, one of the former players’ lawyers at the time, told The Associated Press that Mangum’s allegations caused an “enormous tornado of destruction” for countless people involved, including the accused men. They were wrongfully vilified nationally as “racially motivated rapists,” Cooney said.

The Durham prosecutor who championed Mangum’s case was disbarred for lying and misconduct. Prosecutors at the time declined to press charges against Mangum for the false accusations.

The former lacrosse players reached an undisclosed settlement with Duke University in 2007 after suing it for the handling of the rape allegations.

Mangum, who was convicted of second-degree murder in 2013 and is eligible to be released from prison as early as 2026, told the podcast interviewer that she hopes the three falsely accused men can forgive her.

“I want them to know that I love them and they didn’t deserve that,” she said.

Durham-based podcaster Kat DePasquale said she wrote to Mangum because she was curious about the case that got so much attention, and that Mangum wrote back saying she wanted to talk.

Mangum’s apology struck Cooney as sincere and “a good first step,” but he said the decision to forgive her is ultimately up to the three former lacrosse players.

“It’s going to be a part of their biography for the rest of their lives and part of their obituaries,” Cooney said of the three men.

Dick Vitale said he’s cancer-free after his fourth bout with the disease in just over three years.

The 85-year-old ESPN college basketball analyst announced Thursday on social media that he got the news after a morning scan.

“SANTA CLAUS came early as Dr Rick Brown called & said that my PET SCAN at 7 AM came back CLEAN OF CANCER !” Vitale posted on X. “OMG thanks so much to ALL of YOU for your (prayers). Yes I’m cutting the nets down baby it’s my National Championship!”

Vitale had surgery in the summer to remove cancerous lymph nodes from his neck. He was previously treated for melanoma and lymphoma, and had radiation treatments last year for vocal cord cancer.

The Basketball Hall of Famer has been with ESPN since 1979, the year the network launched. The former college and NBA coach called ESPN’s first college basketball broadcast.

He’s also a longtime fundraiser for cancer research, helping friend Jim Valvano to the stage at the 1993 ESPYs, where Valvano delivered his famous “Don’t give up” speech. Valvano died of adenocarcinoma less than two months later.

Franklin D. Roosevelt had many Christmas traditions he took part in with his family and White House staff during his time in office. 

Roosevelt was born in 1882 in Hyde Park, New York, a place he called home throughout his life. 

The start of Roosevelt’s time in the political sphere started in 1910, when he was elected to the New York Senate.

Soon after, in 1912, he stepped into the role of chairman of the Forestry Committee of the New York Senate. 

At this time, he began to plant trees on his land, which he continued for 34 years, according to the National Park Service website.

By the 1930s, Roosevelt had gotten into the rhythm of having 20,000 to 55,000 trees planted on his land annually, according to the National Park Service. 

During the 1930s, Roosevelt began to grow Christmas trees on his estate in Hyde Park, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. 

Some of the Christmas trees grown on the estate were sent to Winston Churchill, according to the National Park Service.

Holiday spirit was on full display in the White House during Roosevelt’s time in office. 

Roosevelt, who spent 12 years in office, the longest term of any U.S. president, spent many of his Christmases the same way while in the White House.

Roosevelt spent 10 consecutive Christmases in the White House, and the last two at home in Hyde Park, according to the White House Historical Association. 

Staples of a Roosevelt Christmas included a Christmas Eve party held by the president and the first lady for White House staff and the lighting of the National Christmas Tree, per the source. 

It was 1933 when Roosevelt gave his very first holiday message, his “fireside chat,” to the nation.

On Christmas morning, the president often spent time with family attending services and opening presents with his grandchildren. 

The annual Christmas feast included dishes like roasted turkey, chestnut dressing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, pineapple salad, with plum pudding, eggnog, ice cream and cakes for dessert, according to the White House Historical Association.

Roosevelt’s long span in office included devastating events in history, like the Great Depression, the attack on Pearl Harbor and World War II. 

During years of turmoil, Christmas traditions saw a shift. For example, during World War II, four of Roosevelt’s sons were serving in the armed forces, according to the White House Historical Association, leaving his family scattered around the globe.

During the White House holiday gathering in 1942, the gift given out to employees was “a black leather folder filled with war savings bonds,” according to the White House Association. In 1944, a scroll with the president’s “D-Day” prayer was handed out to employees. 

Roosevelt’s last Christmas message was delivered from his home in Hyde Park in 1944. 

“We pray that with victory will come a new day of peace on earth in which all the Nations of the earth will join together for all time. That is the spirit of Christmas, the holy day. May that spirit live and grow throughout the world in all the years to come,” he said, per the White House Association.

  • Kirstin Lobato was arrested at age 18, wrongly convicted twice, and served nearly 16 years in a Nevada state prison for a 2001 killing she did not commit.
  • Lobato was awarded more than $34 million after a civil trial jury found Las Vegas police and two detectives, now retired, fabricated evidence during their investigation and intentionally inflicted emotional distress upon Lobato. 
  • Lobato was exonerated and freed from prison in 2017 after the Innocence Project and attorneys in Las Vegas again took her case to the state Supreme Court, showing evidence that Lobato was about 150 miles away from Las Vegas when the crime was committed.

A federal jury in Nevada has awarded more than $34 million to a woman who was arrested at age 18, wrongly convicted twice, and served nearly 16 years in a Nevada state prison for a 2001 killing she did not commit.

Kirstin Lobato, who is now 41 and uses the name Blaise, cried and hugged her attorneys after a judge read the trial verdict Thursday in U.S. District Court, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

“It’s been an uphill battle with many, many obstacles,” she told reporters. “And I’m happy that it’s all finally finished.”

Lobato said she didn’t know if becoming a millionaire would make up for years in prison, adding that she had “no idea what the rest of my life is going to look like.”

The civil trial jury found Las Vegas police and two detectives, now retired, fabricated evidence during their investigation and intentionally inflicted emotional distress upon Lobato. The panel determined that Lobato should receive $34 million in compensatory damages from the department and $10,000 in punitive damages from each former detective.

The detectives, Thomas Thowsen and James LaRochelle, and their attorney, Craig Anderson, declined to comment outside court. Anderson told U.S. District Judge Richard Boulware he planned to file additional court documents following the verdict. Anderson said Friday an appeal was “likely.”

The department previously agreed to pay damages if the jury ruled in Lobato’s favor.

Lobato was 18 when she was interviewed by police without an attorney, arrested and charged with killing Duran Bailey in Las Vegas in July 2001. Bailey, who had been homeless, was found dead near a trash bin with a slashed neck, cracked skull and missing genitals.

No physical evidence or witnesses connected Lobato to the killing, and she maintained she never met Bailey. But police maintained she confessed in jail that she had killed a man who tried to rape her during a three-day methamphetamine binge.

Lobato was 19 when she was convicted of murder in 2002. The Nevada Supreme Court threw out that verdict and Lobato’s prison sentence in 2004 because her lawyers weren’t able to cross-examine a prosecution witness who testified that Lobato made the jailhouse confession.

Lobato was tried again in 2006, convicted of manslaughter, mutilation and weapon charges, and sentenced to 13 to 45 years in prison.

She was exonerated and freed from prison in late 2017 after the Innocence Project and attorneys in Las Vegas again took her case to the state Supreme Court. Justices said evidence showed that Lobato was in her hometown of Panaca, Nevada, some 150 miles from Las Vegas when Bailey was killed.

Last October, a state court judge in Las Vegas issued a certificate declaring Lobato innocent of Bailey’s killing.

That action was challenged by Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill and Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson in a letter asking state Attorney General Aaron Ford to investigate how and why attorneys for Lobato acquired the certificate of innocence.

Trump, Stephanopoulos ordered to sit for depositions for president-elect’s lawsuit against ABC News

President-elect Donald Trump and ABC News host George Stephanopoulos will sit for depositions next week in Trump’s defamation case against the anchor and his network, a judge ruled on Friday.

Trump is suing ABC News and Stephanopoulos for defamation after the host incorrectly said several times that Trump was “found liable for rape” during an interview last March on “This Week” with Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C. 

Lawyers representing ABC and Stephanopoulos, who also hosts “Good Morning America,” argued in a virtual hearing on Friday that Trump must make himself available for an in-person deposition next week, before the Dec. 24 deadline for the defendants to file a motion for summary judgment in order to avoid a trial.

ABC NEWS’ GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS INACCURATELY SAID TRUMP WAS FOUND ‘LIABLE FOR RAPE’ 10 TIMES, LEGAL GURUS SAY

Trump has made himself available for a recorded deposition so far, but a judge argued that the game has changed now that the election is over, NBC News reported.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisette M. Reid issued an order that Trump sit down for an in-person deposition the week of Dec. 16. She argued that while Trump previously had a “fairly good argument” that he was too busy to do so during the campaign, “he’s now in a completely different posture, and he should be able to make himself available.”

Nathan Siegel, the lawyer representing ABC News, has claimed that he is willing to make the deposition process as convenient as possible for Trump, to the point that he will fly to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and limit the deposition to four hours, and possibly do such a sit-down on a Saturday.

Stephanopoulos will be permitted to do his deposition remotely, the judge ruled.

TRUMP SUES ABC NEWS, GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS FOR DEFAMATION

The president-elect’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito, argued that even if the election is over, the nature of Trump’s position makes such a meeting a difficult endeavor.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to make the president available,” Brito said. “But there are limitations of my ability to do so. I have to factor the Secret Service into the equation.”

NBC reported that he “assured the court that he would immediately work with Trump’s staff to figure out his availability next week.”

TRUMP HITS HARRIS CAMPAIGN’S MEDIA STRATEGY: ‘BIG TACTICAL MISTAKE’

Fox News Digital reached out to Trump and Stephanopoulos’ representatives, neither of whom immediately responded for comment.

Stephanopoulos’ comments were made during a tense exchange with Mace on March 10. After playing a clip of Mace discussing being a victim of rape, Stephanopoulos asked her, “How do you square your endorsement of Donald Trump with the testimony we just saw?” 

“You’ve endorsed Donald Trump for president. Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape and for defaming the victim of that rape,” Stephanopoulos said, alluding to the legal victory by Trump accuser E. Jean Carroll.

Stephanopoulos repeated the claim ten times during his spat with Mace, despite the fact that a jury actually determined Trump was liable for “sexual abuse,” which has a distinct definition under New York law.

ABC has stood by Stephanopoulos since the interview. The suit against ABC recently saw the start date for a jury trial pushed from April 2025 to June 2025 after both sides sought extensions.

Army-Navy set to clash in 125th meeting as President-elect Trump watches on alongside key political figures

The Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen will face off against one another on Saturday for the 125th rendition of the Army-Navy game, but this year’s matchup is surrounded by a lot of buzz – both because of its attendees and because of what’s at stake. 

For the first time ever, both programs enter the game with a combined total of 19 wins. With Army playing in the American Athletic Conference this season, both teams spent time in the Top 25. This will be their first meeting this season and will be a nonconference game.

What’s at stake?

Outside of the bragging rights for their respective military academies, this year’s game marks the first time since 2017 that the winner will have a chance to secure the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy thanks to wins by Army and Navy over Air Force this season. It also marks the first time since 2017 that both teams enter the matchup having secured bowl games. 

Army won its first conference title earlier this month after a win over Tulane in the AAC championship game, placing a bow on their 11-1 record this season. But that accomplishment pales in comparison to what’s at stake on Saturday. 

“It’s a game and a season really all of its own,” Army coach Jeff Monken said Tuesday. “We’ve had a good year. You make it a great year by winning this game coming up on Saturday. Frankly, that’s just the way it goes around here.”

The feeling is mutual for Navy. 

“Oklahoma’s not on our mind right now because it’s all Army-Navy,” linebacker Colin Ramos said of the Midshipmen’s bowl game. “This is our No. 1 goal, and then after that, we’ll have about a week and a half, two weeks — whatever it is — to prepare. Right now, it’s Army-Navy.”

With an 8-3 record, Navy had its first winning season since 2019. But head coach Brian Newberry is prepared for what’s ahead, calling this Army program “the most complete, well-rounded Army football team, the best Army football team” he can recall.

After being elected the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump will make his fifth appearance at the Army-Navy game where he will be joined by Vice President-elect JD Vance. Two sources familiar told Fox News Digital that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida will also be in attendance. 

Separately, a source confirmed to Fox News Digital that Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth will also be in attendance as a guest of Trump. 

Vance also confirmed Friday that Daniel Penny, the Marine veteran found not guilty in the subway chokehold death of Jordan Neely, accepted his invitation to attend the football game as his guest. 

“Daniel’s a good guy, and New York’s mob district attorney tried to ruin his life for having a backbone,” Vance wrote in a post on X. “I’m grateful he accepted my invitation and hope he’s able to have fun and appreciate how much his fellow citizens admire his courage.”

Woman finds 11-pound mushroom, feeds family for a week as experts share warnings

A woman who found an 11-pound mushroom while on a hike was able to feed her family for a week — but experts warn that doing so could be life-threatening.

Alissimon Minnitt, 27, of the village of North Marston, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom, recently spotted a large white object while out on a hike with her father, news agency SWNS reported.

Thinking at first that it was garbage, Minnitt soon realized she’d found an extremely large puffball mushroom. She foraged the mushroom and brought it back to her parents’ house, she told the news agency. (See the video at the top of this article.)

“I was so shocked when I realized it was a mushroom,” Minnitt told SWNS. “It honestly was about twice the size of my head.” 

Minnitt weighed the mushroom when she got to the house, then went to work transforming the giant fungi into meals for the week.

She made four different items, which she documented and rated on her TikTok account.

The “spicy fried mushroom” dish received a 10 out of 10, she said. 

A mushroom-based pizza – meaning the crust was replaced with a slice of mushroom – was an 8 out of 10, and she gave the same score to a mushroom pasta and “meat” balls dish.

The best thing she said she made, however, was a mushroom “roast” similar to a meatloaf. 

Minnitt gave that dish a “10,000 out of 10,” saying it was the “perfect vegetarian meatloaf.”

She also liked how it froze easily, saying it was a “big win.” 

“I was surprised by how much we were able to get out of it. The mushroom roast my mom made was so good, so I took some of it home frozen,” she told SWNS.  

Mushroom foraging warnings

While she was able to safely consume the mushroom she and her father found, wild mushroom foraging can be dangerous and people should exercise extreme care, according to experts. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says people should not eat wild mushrooms unless a trained mycologist (biologist who studies fungi) has identified them. 

“Poisonous mushroom ingestions can result in serious illness and death,” the CDC says. 

The outer rind should be as thin as an eggshell; if thicker, the fungus may be a poisonous earthball.

Many toxic mushrooms resemble edible varieties, according to the website for the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at the University of British Columbia.

In the case of a puffball mushroom, which Minnitt found and ate, a similar-looking mushroom called an “earthball” is toxic when consumed, said the same source.

To tell the difference between the two, a suspected puffball mushroom should be sliced in half from top to bottom prior to cooking.

Additionally, a “puffball” found to have a “small mushroom shape” inside could be deadly.

“The specimen may be the ‘egg’ stage of a deadly or dangerous species such as the death cap,” said the museum.

And while it may not necessarily be deadly, a person should not eat a mushroom that is yellow or brown on the inside, said the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. That coloring means “the specimen is too old and bitter to eat.”

Obviously, the players in the academies are unable to go that route if they go to either Army or Navy. But, with the 125th edition of the Army-Navy game set to kick off on Saturday afternoon just outside of the nation’s capital, Peacock says that’s what makes the annual event that much more special.

“The way I think about this, especially in this age of the portal and NIL, this is college football at its purest form. When these guys are out on the field, they are competing like they are in battle, and they’re competing against each other like they’re in battle.

“But what’s so special, after the game, they’re going to come together, march down the respective ends of the stadium, they’re going to sing each other’s alma mater, and they’re going to put on the uniform of the United States. They’re going to defend our country, defend our freedom, and that to me is so spectacular about these individuals and about this game.”

“There’s only a one-way portal into Army and Navy,” added Peacock. “But what they find are these student-athletes that want to play, but also want to do something more than just play, and that to me is what makes it so special. But their ability to put competitive teams on the field in this environment also speaks to something that we don’t talk about a lot. And that’s the power of teamwork and culture.”

USAA announced Friday that it will remain the only presenting sponsor of the game through the 2030 edition, a title it has held since 2009.

Army is ranked 22nd in the nation with their 11-1 record – while Navy is on the outside looking in, they are 8-3.
