NC State football coach unimpressed with Bill Belichick question ahead of bowl game

0

The rivalry between N.C. State and North Carolina still runs deep even with the regular season officially wrapped.

During a press conference with reporters Friday, Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren didn’t appear pleased that the first question of his media session was about rival head coach Bill Belichick.

“That’s the first question I’m going to get today? Shocker,” Doeren said.

The question about the biggest news to hit the ACC this year was asked as N.C. State prepares for its bowl game against East Carolina, another in-state rival.

Despite his initial remarks, Doeren did manage to welcome the famed former NFL coach to the conference before adding he’s not “really thinking” about North Carolina.

“Well, one, welcome to the ACC, and  [I’m] excited to compete against coach. Obviously, all coaches in the business have a great amount of respect and know what he’s done in the profession. So, for me as a competitor, I’m excited to compete. And that’s about all I have to say about it because I’m really not thinking a whole lot about that program. I’m thinking about my own.”

BILL BELICHICK SAID HE ALWAYS WANTED TO COACH IN COLLEGE AFTER TAKING UNC JOB: ‘DREAM COME TRUE’

Belichick, 72, entered the broadcast world after mutually agreeing to part ways with the New England Patriots last season. But the legendary coach returned to the sidelines when he agreed this week to take on the head coaching job at North Carolina.

Belichick and Doeren will have a chance to settle things next year on the field.

“While continuing his leadership of Trump Media & Technology Group, Devin will draw on his experience as former Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and his key role in exposing the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, to provide me with independent assessments of the effectiveness and propriety of the U.S. Intelligence Community’s activities,” Trump said in the announcement.

Trump also named Edgar as his pick for deputy secretary of Homeland Security.

“Troy served for me previously as the Chief Financial Officer and Associate Deputy Under Secretary of Management for Homeland Security, where he did an outstanding job managing their $90 Billion Dollar budget, resourcing critical immigration policy, and funding Wall construction,” Trump said.

“Troy is currently an executive at IBM. He holds an M.B.A. and B.S. of Business Administration from the University of Southern California,” Trump said. “He was previously the Mayor of Los Alamitos, California, where he helped me lead the City and County revolt against Sanctuary Cities in 2018.”

If the two are confirmed, Edgar will serve alongside South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who was tapped as Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Homeland Secretary.

Bill White

White is the founder and CEO of Constellations Group, a Manhattan-based consulting firm, and previously served as president of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York.

“Bill is a highly respected businessman, philanthropist, author, and advocate for our Nation’s Military, Veterans, and First Responders. He is the CEO of Constellations Group, and former President of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum,” Trump said.

“Bill has worked tirelessly to support Great American Patriots who have given everything for our Country by raising over $1.5 Billion Dollars for our fallen heroes, catastrophically wounded, and severely burned Service Members. He is a twice recipient of the Meritorious Public Service Award for extraordinary service from the U.S. Coast Guard, and for outstanding support from the U.S. Navy.”

Trump seizes on drone controversy to mock Chris Christie

0

President-elect Trump on Saturday seized on the mysterious drone controversy in New Jersey to mock one-time ally turned nemesis Chris Christie.

The president-elect, who will take office in just over a month, shared an artificially generated meme of the former New Jersey governor eating McDonald’s with more McDonald’s meals being delivered by drones, mocking his weight on Truth Social and X.

Christie endorsed Trump in 2016 but was later axed as the head of his transition team.

Last year, Christie had a short-lived presidential campaign for the 2024 election during which he called Trump a “coward” and a “puppet of Putin,” but he dropped out in January.

TRUMP BRINGS POLITICAL DRAMA TO ARMY-NAVY GAME SIDELINES

“I want to promise you this, I’m going to make sure that in no way do I enable Donald Trump to ever be president of the United States again. And that’s more important than my own personal ambition,” he said when he dropped out.

Christie’s weight has been a frequent target for Trump since their falling-out. Last year, Trump jokingly told a supporter to not call the former governor a “fat pig.”

Since mid-November, New Jersey residents have been baffled by unexplained sightings of what appear to be drones.

NEW JERSEY LAWMAKER CALLS FOR LIMITED STATE OF EMERGENCY TO COMBAT MYSTERIOUS DRONES

The sightings have also been reported in other areas of the country, including military installations, prompting lawmakers to demand answers.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and law enforcement have said the drones don’t appear to be a threat to public safety.

On Friday, Trump called for the drones to be shot down if there’s no reasonable explanation for them.

Nicole Kidman admits she sounds ‘bats— crazy’ for what she’s done to shed the weight of a character

0

Nicole Kidman has always been willing to do whatever it takes to prepare herself for an upcoming role.

During an interview for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” issue, Kidman and Zendaya discuss the physical and emotional toll certain roles can take and steps they take to shed the weight of character.

“It’s really taxing going through all of those emotions. Your [body] doesn’t … know that it’s fake,” the “Euphoria” actress, 28, explained to Kidman, who stars in the upcoming erotic thriller “Babygirl.”

NICOLE KIDMAN SAYS EROTIC THRILLER ‘BABYGIRL’ WAS ‘LIBERATING’ BUT LEFT HER FEELING ‘VERY EXPOSED’

Nicole Kidman

“No. So you’re putting yourself through the trauma,” said Kidman. “On ‘Babygirl’ there were parts that are now not in the film that we shot that gave me — it was exhausting. But it was also just emotionally disturbing. The same when I was doing ‘Big Little Lies.’ That was disturbing to my body and my psyche because I couldn’t tell what was real and what wasn’t. I would have real bruises all over my back and body.”

“I still have my Rue scars,” said Zendaya, whose films “Challengers” and “Dune: Part Two” released earlier this year, referring to her “Euphoria” character.

“My brain would say, ‘Hold on. You’re hurt.’ So, I’ve done things where they clean my chakras and pray and get out the sage,” Kidman added. “Honestly, I’ll take whatever, so I can step into the next place free and not scarred or damaged or wounded. Which sounds like I’m bats— crazy, but I’m not.

“Even just a massage, where suddenly you get a beautiful touch. That’s healing, and we have to heal. I’m still learning not to sacrifice my body for the sake of the art because part of me wants to. Having to value who I am, it’s a journey. But you seem very stable.”

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman opened up about her new “raw and dangerous” role in the film and explained why it’s empowering to be viewed as a “sexual being” at 57.

“A lot of times women are discarded at a certain period of their career as a sexual being. So, it was really beautiful to be seen in this way,” the Australian native told the outlet of her portrayal of powerful CEO and mom Romy, who partakes in a hot affair with her younger intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson).

“From the minute I read it, I was like, ‘Yeah, this is a voice I haven’t seen, this is a place that I haven’t been, I don’t think audiences have been.’ My character has reached a stage where she’s got all this power, but she’s not sure who she is, what she wants, what she desires, even though she seems to have it all. And I think that’s really relatable.

“There are many women who are going, ‘Well, I’ve done this. I’ve got children. I’ve got this husband. And what do I actually want? Who am I, and what are my desires? Do I have to pretend to be something else for people to love me?’ I think it’s very releasing, this film,” Kidman continued. “I hope it is. I’ve had some people say it’s the most disturbing film they’ve ever seen, which I’m like, ‘Oh no, I’m so sorry.’

“When I read it, I was like, ‘I’ve not read a film like this.’ I thought it was incredibly sexy,” she later added. “Really, just so raw and dangerous, and I couldn’t believe they were giving us the money to make it. The sexuality of it [felt dangerous]. That it wasn’t written for a 20-year-old. It wasn’t written even for a 30-year-old.”

Kidman has had a busy year with six 2024 projects, including starring in Netflix’s “The Perfect Couple,” the Paramount+ series “Lioness” and more.

“I incorporate my family into [my work]. And because I have a musician husband [Keith Urban], he’s got that slightly nomadic thing as well,” she added. “So, he’s not someone that goes, ‘No, I have to stay here. I can’t move.’ My girls, I’ve always said, ‘You are of the world, you’re global children.’ That’s what we do as a family. We travel and we experience things. And that’s a great education, too.”

“Babygirl” opens in theaters Dec. 25.

Bob Fernandez, 100-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor, dies peacefully at home 83 years after bombing

0

Bob Fernandez, a 100-year-old survivor of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, died shortly after deteriorating health prompted him to skip a trip to Hawaii to attend last week’s remembrance ceremony marking the 83rd anniversary of the attack.

Fernandez died peacefully at the Lodi, California, home of his nephew, Joe Guthrie, on Wednesday. Guthrie’s daughter, Halie Torrrell, was holding his hand when he took his last breath. Fernandez suffered a stroke about a month ago that caused him to slow down but Guthrie said doctors attributed his condition to age.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, DECEMBER 7, 1941, PEARL HARBOR ATTACK KILLS 2,403 AMERICANS, LAUNCHES US INTO WWII

“It was his time,” Guthrie said.

Fernandez was a 17-year-old sailor on board the USS Curtiss during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack that propelled the U.S. into World War II. A mess cook, he was waiting tables and bringing sailors morning coffee and food when they heard an alarm sound. Through a porthole, Fernandez saw a plane fly by with the red ball insignia known to be painted on Japanese aircraft.

He rushed down three decks to a magazine room where he and other sailors waited for someone to unlock a door storing shells so they could pass them to the ship’s guns. He has told interviewers over the years that some of his fellow sailors were praying and crying as they heard gunfire above.

“I felt kind of scared because I didn’t know what the hell was going on,” Fernandez told The Associated Press in an interview weeks before his death.

Fernandez’s ship, the Curtiss, lost 21 men and nearly 60 of its sailors were injured. The bombing killed more than 2,300 U.S. servicemen. Nearly half, or 1,177, were sailors and Marines on board the USS Arizona, which sank during the battle.

“We lost a lot of good people, you know. They didn’t do nothing,” Fernandez said. “But we never know what’s going to happen in a war.”

Fernandez had been planning to return to Pearl Harbor last week to attend an annual commemoration hosted by the Navy and the National Park Service but became too weak to make the trip, Guthrie said.

He was “so proud” of his six years in the Navy, all of it aboard the USS Curtiss, Guthrie said. Most of his casual clothes, like hats and shirts, were related to his service.

“It was just completely ingrained in him,” his nephew said.

Fernandez worked as a forklift driver at a cannery in San Leandro, California, after the war. His wife of 65 years, Mary Fernandez, died in 2014.

He enjoyed music and dancing, and until recently attended weekly music performances at a local park and a restaurant. He helped neighbors in his trailer park take care of their yards until he moved in with Guthrie last year.

“I’d do yard work and split firewood and he’d swing the axe a little bit,” Guthrie said. “We’d call it his physical therapy.”

Fernandez’s advice for living a long life included stopping eating once you’re full and marching up stairs. He said it was OK to take a nap, but do something like laundry or wash dishes before going to bed. He recommended being kind to everyone.

Guthrie said he thinks Fernandez would want to be remembered for bringing people joy.

“He would rake people’s yards if they couldn’t do it. He would paint a fence. He would help somebody,” Guthrie said. “He would give people money if they needed something. He was so generous and such a kind person. He made friends everywhere.”

Fernandez is survived by his oldest son, Robert J. Fernandez, a granddaughter and several great-grandchildren.

There are 16 known survivors of Pearl Harbor that are still alive, according to a list maintained by Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. All of them are at least 100 years old.

Fernandez’s death would have brought the number to 15, but Farley recently learned of an additional survivor.

Former Navy pilot says he rules out commercial contractors, doubts fed involvement in NJ drone sightings

0

Former F-18 U.S. Navy fighter pilot Lt. Ryan Graves said he dismissed the involvement of commercial contractors in drone sightings reported around New Jersey in recent days.

“Based on my analysis of the situation and the statements made by the Pentagon and the legislative branch, I cannot believe that this is our own government acting in such confusion. God help us if so,” Graves told Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum Thursday on “The Story.”

“It’s the same for commercial contractors,” he continued. “There’s zero benefit, all risk for operating these things so close to the ground, especially if it’s some type of classified equipment.”

Graves concluded his analysis leads the mystery to “foreign adversaries or something else.”

FBI LEADER SAYS IT’S ‘CONCERNING’ HOW LITTLE HIS AGENCY KNOWS ABOUT MYSTERIOUS DRONES SEEN OVER NEW JERSEY

“We’ve heard directly from the Pentagon that there is no so-called ‘mothership’ off the coast of Virginia and New Jersey that is launching these items,” Graves said.

“We have some of the most sophisticated radar systems on the Eastern seaboard. We should, with great certainty, know exactly where these objects are, where they’re going and where they’re setting down if they are. So, either these things have the ability to counter those technologies, or we’re simply lying about what’s happening.”

A map showing drone sightings around New Jersey.

Over the past week, leaders from both parties in New Jersey have addressed public concern over reports of drone sightings and frustration over the lack of clear answers.

On Monday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy described the drones as “very sophisticated” and expressed his frustration with the lack of clarity surrounding their origin.

Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., shared on “The Story” that he spent Monday night on a beach and spoke with a U.S. Coast Guard commanding officer who recounted an incident from the previous night in which a Coast Guard 47-foot vessel was closely followed by more than a dozen drones.

By Wednesday, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., sent a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray and FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker that urged the agencies to provide municipal and county officials with a briefing on the drone activity and requested that any available information be shared with the public.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., said on “The Faulkner Focus” Wednesday “very qualified” and “reliable” sources suspect the drones seen over the Garden State could be connected to an Iranian “mothership” positioned off the East Coast — a claim that was subsequently denied by the Pentagon.

State Sen. Jon Bramnick, R-N.J., called on the Department of Defense to come to the state to investigate the mysterious drone activity Wednesday afternoon.

US MILITARY RESEARCH CENTER DENIES NJ DRONES ARE THEIRS

House Speaker Mike Johnson disclosed he was getting a classified briefing Thursday on the reported drone sightings in the Garden State.

Graves told McCallum he is urging the “full force” of the government and Pentagon to be deployed to determine the nature of these objects — identifying, characterizing and, if necessary, selecting a primary target to bring down for further examination.

“It seems like the different branches of the government aren’t communicating very well on this problem,” Graves said. “And for me, it leads me to believe that there is a true uncertainty about what’s going on here. I find it hard to believe that the Biden administration can continue this policy of cognitive dissonance on this topic. Hundreds of people are seeing these events.”

Graves added that the reported drone sightings are “not restricted to just people on the ground.”

“My nonprofit, Americans for Safe Aerospace, has been receiving reports from commercial pilots, military pilots and veterans for over a year now, showing how consistent and how problematic this issue is at altitude where they’re flying around,” Graves said. “We need to have a better coordinated response and actually listen to the people on the ground and in the air that are seeing things.”

Bill Belichick showed interest in unlikely coaching gig before taking UNC job: reports

0

Nearly 25 years after infamously resigning as head coach of the New York Jets, Bill Belichick apparently considered that job again.

In 2000, Belichick was about to take over as the next head coach of the New York Jets. But during his introductory press conference, he resigned and wrote it on a napkin.

Belichick cited questions he had about ownership for his decision. He then went to the New England Patriots and made Jets fans’ lives a living hell for the next two-plus decades.

Now, Belichick is the head coach of UNC, but it reportedly didn’t happen without him first showing interest in … the Jets.

A couple weeks before going to Chapel Hill, The Athletic says, Belichick’s “inner circle” had informal talks with some NFL teams, including the Jets. However, there were no formal discussions, and the UNC opportunity came about.

The Jets fired Robert Saleh after a 2-3 start, and they’re 1-7 since then.

There had been online speculation Belichick could have returned to the New York Giants, where he won two Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator. He coached Lawrence Taylor, a Tar Heels star before becoming the second pick in the 1981 NFL Draft.

It’s widely speculated Belichick was worried about Woody Johnson owning the team, which he still does. Johnson took a hiatus from the team after serving as Donald Trump’s ambassador to the United Kingdom during Trump’s first presidency. Belichick did serve as the team’s defensive coordinator for three seasons under Bill Parcells, who was also the general manager.

Rowdy Lions fan banned from NFL stadiums, has season tickets revoked after confrontation with Packers coach

0

A dustup between an overzealous Detroit Lions fan and Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur during a Week 14 matchup has resulted in serious consequences for the season ticket holder.

Fahad Yousif told CBS News Detroit that he has had his season ticket privileges revoked and been banned from all NFL stadiums after he got into a verbal confrontation with LaFleur before kickoff earlier this month.

“I started trash-talking the other team, so I get that, but I really don’t think getting to this level was necessarily warranted,” Yousif told the station.

LaFleur appeared to get into a shouting match with Yousif after the presentation of the American flag, which Yousif had been on the field holding. The two were eventually separated by Packers staff and game officials, but the incident left the veteran head coach stunned.

“I’ve never been a part of something like that,” LaFleur told reporters after the game. “He was talking junk to our players — giving them the throat-slash sign, and you’re trying to de-escalate it, and then he gets in my face.”

Yousif told CBS News that he had been asked to leave the game at halftime, but he found out only recently that he is no longer allowed to be a Lions season ticket holder, despite being one for the last three years.

“It was terrible, I didn’t think it was real at first. To completely revoke my tickets and never let me be a season ticket member again, it hurts. It hurts bad.”

Yousif said during the interview that he also had been informed that he has been banned from all NFL stadiums until he completes an online code-of-conduct course.

He expressed understanding for having been in the wrong, but added that he believes that the situation has been “blown out of proportion.”

REBECCA GRANT: America has a drone problem, and no one is in charge

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President-elect Donald Trump wants to create an Iron Dome missile shield over the United States.

But what about the drones flying underneath it? “Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge. I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!” he wrote Friday on Truth Social.

Couldn’t agree more, except please don’t get your shotgun out of the closet and start rooting around for a box of shells. It’s illegal to interfere with any aircraft in flight, manned or unmanned.  Maybe its deer season where you live, but alas, it is never drone season. Right now, statutes limit even the military’s ability to intercept drones in the U.S.

NJ LAWMAKER CALLS FOR LIMITED STATE OF EMERGENCY TO COMBAT MYSTERIOUS DRONES

America’s got a drone problem.  Some are actually airplanes. Some drones are legal and no threat to you and me. Some are flown by drug cartels dropping off fentanyl in San Diego. Gen. Greg Guillot, Commander, U.S. Northern Command, told the Senate more than 1,000 drones per month cross the southern border. Other drones belong to the police, or to the military. Don’t forget the NYPD has 110 drone operators qualified by the FAA. I also expect some of the drone sightings connect to military experiments and operations.

But without question, the U.S. is vulnerable to a national security threat from drones in a way we’ve never experienced before. While many U.S. military installations have anti-drone systems, the rest of the country doesn’t. A new plan for countering drones in U.S. airspace should be top priority for President-elect Trump’s incoming Cabinet: Homeland Security, Defense, and Transportation, with the FAA.  Find a conference table at Mar-a-Lago and get key Cabinet nominees Kristi Noem, Pete Hegseth and Sean Duffy started now.

What worries me is the pattern emerging of sightings of multiple drones, operating at low altitude, with persistent and coordinated overwatch, near military bases and critical infrastructure. Of course, New Jersey has a lot of cool stuff: the aircraft carrier electromagnetic catapult test infrastructure, Picatinny Arsenal, Naval Weapons Site Earle, which stores and loads munitions for the Navy’s Atlantic fleet.

While the New Jersey sightings date from Nov. 20, drone incidents started years ago. Back in 2017, an Air Force F-22 Raptor stealth fighter encountered a drone over the runway while landing at Langley AFB in Virginia. Yeah, I can see why the Chinese might want a close-up view of the engine intakes and stealth panel seals on that. In California, drones regularly drop inside the fences at the sprawling factories in Palmdale that build top secret military planes like the B-21 stealth bomber.  It’s a stew of attempted surveillance – whether by military aircraft aficionados or the Chinese or somebody else.

“Some of it, I’m pretty sure, is our adversaries. Why wouldn’t they?” Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., commented to Breaking Defense at the Reagan National Defense Forum Dec. 7.

Here are my four biggest concerns.

The White House can’t be trusted. It doesn’t feel like this last-gasp Biden White House is working the problem. Ever since the Chinese spy balloon traipsed from Montana to South Carolina in 2023, Americans have realized that our skies are not always safe.

We are a low-trust society. The lack of transparency is almost worse than the drones.

America’s skies are not defended against internal threats. At the heart of the drone mystery is a very disturbing problem: We do not defend the interior airspace of our vast nation. That was apparent on 9/11, when it took 175 Air Force fighter jets launched all over the nation with their air refueling tankers to patch together linked interior radar coverage and communications. Many improvements have been made, but the 2023 spy balloon intercept took effort, and the drone challenge is a whole new chapter.

Sen. Blumenthal and drones reported in Connecticut

Sen. Blumenthal is seen next to a photo of reported drones in Connecticut. Blumenthal is among the lawmakers who have pushed for action on the UAS.

No one is in charge. This is a job for NORTHCOM but “at this time, NORTHCOM does not have a formal role in defending against UAS,” Guillot said in March. He’s “making proposals to see if there is an increased role in the UAS fight.” Mind you, NORTHCOM is busy with defending against China and Russia in the High North and upgrading West Coast missile defense. The Pentagon signed off on a counter-UAS strategy on Dec. 2 and the defense bill for Fiscal Year 2025 helps, but a lot of that is focused on overseas operations.

Putin may be involved. On Friday, German officials confirmed drone operations around the U.S. airbase at Ramstein. In Britain, drones were sighted over Royal Air Force bases, where the U.S. stations F-35s and keeps nuclear weapons storage sites. Villagers at Beck Row, Suffolk, had the same shocked reaction as New Jersey. “They were really noisy and had lights. They looked official to be honest,” villager Casseem Campbell told the BBC on Nov. 29.  “You get more information off Facebook than you do the base,” griped another resident. Both German and British officials suspect the drones may be part of an ongoing Russian espionage and disruption campaign to weaken NATO support for Ukraine.

I don’t want any of Putin’s drones here. Time for the Trump team to figure this out.

Fortunately, the U.S. is awash in counter-drone systems. The Coyote is a counter-drone rocket launched from a tube on a truck or helicopter. The DroneHunter throws a net over drones weighing several hundred pounds, and has been tried out in Ukraine. U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopters shot down drones with Hellfire missiles during an exercise in Saudi Arabia this fall. Another great method is electronic disruption of the drone’s flight controls and guidance. The list goes on, but none of it can work without coordinated surveillance and revamped command and control authorities.

America’s drone problem comes down to this: leadership. Big decisions need to be made within the first few months of Trump’s new term. For as citizens in New Jersey will agree, we are out of time.
