WASHINGTON (AP) — Jayson Tatum had 28 points and 12 rebounds and the Boston Celtics cruised to a 112-98 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday night.

Tatum had missed two of Boston’s previous four games with a knee issue. He helped the Celtics win their seventh straight over the Wizards and third in Washington this season.

Payton Pritchard added 15 points on five 3-pointers, and Derrick White also had 15 points.

Jordan Poole led Washington with 21 points, and Bilal Coulibaly added 19. The Wizards have lost three in a row and 16 of 17.

Wizards: Justin Champagnie had 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Bub Carrington added 11 points and 10 rebound.

Key moment

Tatum hit three baskets during a 15-0 run that spanned across the first and second quarters, including a pull-up 3 with four seconds left in the first to stretch Boston’s lead to 11 points. White’s 3-pointer early in the second completed the run, making it 39-23.

Key stat

The Celtics had a 16-1 free-throw advantage in the first half and finished at 24-8.

Up next

Both teams are back in action Thursday night. Boston hosts Chicago, and Washington hosts Charlotte.

Herb Chambers donates $100M for new cancer facility at Mass. General Hospital – Boston News, Weather, Sports

0

BOSTON (WHDH) – Massachusetts General Hospital has received a $100 million gift from Boston entrepreneur and philanthropist Herb Chambers in support of a new state-of-the-art building designed to meet the growing demand for world-class cancer care.

The new facility — which will offer integrated, patient-centered care, and streamline the healthcare journey for patients and their families from prevention and early detection to treatment and survivorship — will support new initiatives and innovations, redefine treatment, enhance patient care, and provide much-needed assistance for family members.

In recognition of the gift, MGH will name the East Tower of the Phillip and Susan Ragon Building the Herb Chambers Tower. The nearly 1 million-square foot Herb Chambers Tower will offer an array of re-imagined indoor and outdoor areas. Patients will have access to a nearly 8,000-square-foot rooftop garden with expansive views of Beacon Hill and a new Center for Urgent Cancer Care that will provide 24/7 highly specialized care for cancer patients. The tower is slated to be complete in 2027.

“This gift, for me, is intensely personal,” Chambers said. “Patients at Mass General receive the highest level of care, with all departments operating in perfect harmony. Over the years, members of my family, friends and I, have had the good fortune of being cared for by the legendary MGH team. My heart fills with gratitude when I reflect on the dedicated and compassionate professionals that have treated us. It gives me immense pride to be in a position to give back to a city that has given me so much. As we all know too well, most families will be impacted by cancer in some way. My motivation in extending this gift is that the Herb Chambers Tower will shine as a beacon of hope for everyone touched by this awful disease. There can never be enough effort or resources put into finding a cure.”

Anne Klibanski, MD, President and CEO of Mass General Brigham said in a statement, “We are deeply grateful to Herb Chambers for his steadfast commitment, visionary leadership, and generous support of our mission. Through this truly transformative gift, we celebrate a shared, enduring legacy that will shape the future of healthcare at Mass General Brigham for generations to come.”

ICE arrests illegal immigrant wanted for murder in Brazil

0

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Philadelphia arrested a Senegalese illegal immigrant who is wanted for murder in Brazil.

Gora Tourie Fall, a 34-year-old citizen of Senegal, was arrested during a targeted enforcement operation on Dec. 10, in Philadelphia, ICE officials said in a statement.

Fall was caught and released by the Biden-Harris administration’s Border Patrol in Eagle Pass, Texas, in April 2021, officials stated.

Officials said Fall was later issued a notice to appear before an immigration judge and then released on parole.

ICE says they were made aware of Fall’s outstanding arrest warrant in Brazil in May.

Fall is now being held in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment on the arrest but did not immediately receive a response.

Nearly 100 illegal immigrants on the terror watch list have been released into the United States during the Biden administration, and Border Patrol agents have encountered migrants on the watch list from dozens of different countries, a House report from August revealed.

“Under the Biden-Harris Administration, of the more than 250 illegal aliens on the terrorist watchlist (sic) who were encountered by Border Patrol at the southwest border between fiscal years 2021 and 2023, DHS has released into American communities at least 99, with at least 34 others in DHS custody but not yet removed from the United States,” reads the report by Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee, a copy of which was first obtained by Fox News Digital.

The staff interim report also found that immigration judges granted bond to at least 27 migrants on the watch list who entered illegally and that Border Patrol has encountered tens of thousands of migrants from countries that could present national security risks, including 2,134 Afghan nationals, 33,347 Chinese nationals, 541 Iranian nationals, 520 Syrian nationals and 3,104 Uzbek nationals.

“That does not include the untold numbers of potential terrorists that evaded Border Patrol to enter the United States as part of nearly 2 million ‘gotaways’ since the beginning of the Biden-Harris Administration,” the report says.

The report, citing information provided to committee staff in June, also found that Border Patrol encountered migrants on the terror watch list from 36 different countries, including places with an active terror presence. Those countries include Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Tajikistan and Yemen.

“With national security experts and immigration officials increasingly concerned about the threat of terrorism originating from the border, it is clear that policymakers must take all necessary steps to secure the border and stop the flow of illegal aliens. However, the Biden-Harris Administration has refused to address the national security nightmare created by its radical, open-borders agenda,” the report reads.

Another scathing report released by the committee in October added that more than 1.7 million migrants have been encountered at the U.S. border and have come from countries that officials believe pose a national security threat to the U.S.

The report says the number of “special interest aliens” (SIAs) came from a congressional staff briefing by Department of Homeland Security officials. SIAs are those who have come from countries identified by the U.S. government as having conditions that promote or protect terrorism or potentially pose some sort of national security threat to the U.S.

Russian paramilitary soldiers killed in friendly fire attack

0

Russian paramilitary soldiers were accidentally targeted and killed by North Korean troops in a recent bout of friendly fire, according to Ukrainian officials.

In a statement published on Saturday, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) detailed how Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) soldiers have recently assisted Russian troops in the Kursk Oblast, which is currently occupied by Ukrainian forces. Ukrainian officials estimate that around 11,000 DPRK personnel are stationed in Russia.

“The aggressor state of Russia has begun to use DPRK soldiers in assault operations in the Kursk region, in particular, as part of the combined units of the marines and airborne troops of the Russian Armed Forces,” the statement read.

“The North Korean troops suffer sanitary and irreversible losses as a result of a successful fire attack by the Ukrainian Security and Defense Forces,” the DIU added. “In particular, at one of the positions in the Kursk region, the DPRK army was effectively targeted by FPV drones.”

The DIU noted that, in a recent incident, the language barrier between Russian and North Korean troops ultimately led to the death of eight soldiers in the Akhmat special forces unit, which is a paramilitary group in Chechnya.

“When using the DPRK troops on the battlefield, the language barrier remains problematic to control and coordinate actions,” the statement said.

“Because of this problem, North Korean soldiers opened ‘friendly fire’ on the vehicles of the so-called Akhmat battalion,” the DIU added. “As a result, they killed eight Kadyrovite soldiers.”

This latest development in the Russo-Ukrainian war came as the Russian military continued to pummel Ukraine’s power grid, taking advantage of freezing conditions to devastate the country’s largest energy company.

Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Fitchburg on Sunday morning, the mayor’s office announced.

An officer responding to a report of a man with no shirt and brown pants making suicidal statements with a firearm around 9:30 a.m. on Lunenburg Street encountered the man and shot him when he pointed the weapon at him, according to police.

‘Christmas in the City’ organizers calling for donations to bring holiday joy to less fortunate – Boston News, Weather, Sports

0

BOSTON (WHDH) – The scene at Christmas in the City headquarters is a sad one — empty tables where donated gifts usually sit and now organizers are asking for help ahead of the holidays.

“We’ve run out of toys for kids from 6 to 15. There are no toys left,” an organizer told 7NEWS.

Since 1989, Christmas in the City has been bringing joy to less fortunate families by providing toys for kids who might not otherwise get anything.

For mothers like Brianna Scurry, it’s been a godsend every year.

“Me and my daughter have been blessed with this opportunity with my living situation, which is the shelter,” she said.

But this year, things are tight and gifts are going quick.

“Donations are not looking good and that’s why we need help,” the organizer said. “This is the first time in 37 years where we’ve run out of toys.”

There are a number of places where you can donate toys or gift cards.

0

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, MASS. (WHDH) – A man is facing criminal charges after police say he kidnapped his 5-year-old daughter after a domestic dispute in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Sunday afternoon.

Officers responding to a reported domestic dispute at a home on Summer Street around 1:30 p.m. learned that a man had fled the house with his daughter, according to Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Chief Todd Fitzgerald.

A State Police K-9 tracked the suspect behind Manchester-Essex Regional High School and into a nearby cemetery.

He was found hiding in leaves behind a tombstone with the child.

The man, whose name has not been released, was arrested on charges of domestic assault and battery, assault and battery on a child under 14, reckless endangerment of a child, carrying a dangerous weapon, parental kidnapping, and possessing Class B and Class E drugs.

Once he’s released from the hospital, he will be arraigned Monday in Salem District Court.

In a statement, Fitzgerald said, “There is no threat to the public at this time, and we are relieved that the child was safely located and reunited with her mother,” said Chief Fitzgerald.

Josh Allen dazzles in Bills’ win over Lions in high-scoring bout

0

Josh Allen added to his MVP resume on Sunday as he accounted for four touchdowns in the Buffalo Bills’ 48-42 win over the Detroit Lions on the road.

The Bills moved to 11-3 on the season, while the Lions are now 12-2.

Allen, the MVP frontrunner in Vegas, threw for 362 yards on 23-of-34 passing with two passing touchdowns. But the first two scores for Buffalo in this one came on the ground for Allen, who had 11 carries for 68 yards.

Buffalo got off to a 14-0 start at a tough Ford Field as Allen orchestrated back-to-back touchdown drives in which he scored from one yard out and four yards out, respectively.

Jared Goff and the Lions, though, are one of the best offenses in the league, and you knew they were going to respond somehow.

On the Lions’ third drive, Goff found Tim Patrick after scrambling out of the pocket, and he used his entire wingspan to get the ball across the goal line to make it a 14-7 game.

But James Cook, who had two touchdowns and 105 yards rushing on 14 carries, found the end zone for the first time on the ensuing drive to maintain the gap.

It’s what the Bills did all game long: maintaining the lead despite how many times the Lions scored.

And they got in six times as Goff threw for a whopping 494 yards and five touchdowns on 38-of-59 passing.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, his trusty target, had 14 catches to account for 193 of those yards with a score on a 66-yard catch-and-run, and Jahmyr Gibbs tallied one on the ground and one through the air.

Goff even threw a touchdown to offensive lineman Dan Skipper from nine yards out as offensive coordinator Ben Johnson pulled out all the stops to get back into the game.

But Allen and the Bills would reciprocate the scores, with Ray Davis and Khalil Shakir accounting for Allen’s passing touchdowns on the day.

Ty Johnson, Cook’s backup, was also the leading receiver for Buffalo with 114 yards on five catches.

Small businesses say cautious shoppers are seeking ‘cozy’ and ‘festive’ this holiday season – Boston News, Weather, Sports

0

After the busy Black Friday holiday weekend, Kristen Tarnol, owner of Emerald City Gifts in Studio City, California, is already asking her supplier to send more more fuzzy alpaca scarves and warm slippers that were best sellers over the weekend.

“Even though it’s Los Angeles … I think people are looking for cozy items, really,” she said.

With a late Thanksgiving, the holiday shopping season is five days shorter than last year, and owners of small retail shops say people have been quick to snap up holiday décor early, along with gifts for others and themselves. Cozy items like sweaters are popular so far. But there’s little sense of the freewheeling spending that occurred during the pandemic.

Overall, The National Retail Federation predicts retail sales in November and December will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. Online shopping is expected to grow too. Adobe Digital Insights, a division of software company Adobe, predicts an 8.4% increase online for the full season.

Comfort and ‘whimsy’

Some owners say shopping has been erratic so far this holiday season. Nathan Waldon, who owns Nathan & Co., with two gift shops in Oakland, California, said he had his best Black Friday ever, with sales up 32%. But business slowed dramatically after that. He’s hoping it picks up again soon.

“I still feel like I’m optimistic for the season,” he said. “But it’s definitely going to be one of those roller coaster seasons again.”

He said comforting items are selling: Scarves, hats and gloves, humorous Christmas and Hanukkah cards and bright colors.

“People want that sense of whimsy, that sense of fun,” he said. ”A couple of seasons ago everything was sort of muted and earthy, and now everyone is craving happy colors.”

One of his top sellers is a bright pink sweater with the word “Merry” written in big letters that sells for $120. But generally, shoppers are looking to spend less than half of that, he said.

“It could be they could buy the $25 item, but then they’ll add on a little something extra,” he said. “It seems to me that the sweet spot is between 40 and 50 bucks.”

Bouncing back

Small businesses in some parts of the country are hoping holiday shopping helps them recover from extreme weather during the year. In Florida, Jennifer Johnson, owner of consignment shop True Fashionistas in Naples, Florida, had a slow summer season, partly because the area was hit by three hurricanes this year. She decided to increase her Black Friday weekend discount this year to draw in shoppers – offering a 25%-off deal rather than the 18% to 20% she normally offers.

It worked. The store had record sales days over the weekend. People snapped up festive Christmas outfits and Christmas décor. The Christmas décor, including ornaments, candles and other home decorations, is selling faster than last year, she said.

“Last year we were out of Christmas stuff like by the second week of December, and we’re almost out of it now and it’s only the first week of December,” Johnson said.

As for clothing: “anything sequins, anything that has had bedazzling on it, anything that looks fine and festive is what they were buying,” she said.

At her three Philadelphia-area Serendipity shops that sell clothing, accessories and home goods, owner Nicole Beltz also faced weather-related challenges in foot traffic over the year, including snow in the first quarter, a lot of rain in the second quarter and extreme heat in the third quarter. An unpredictable economy and tough competition on pricing from bigger chains were also obstacles during the year.

During the Black Friday weekend, she offered 20% off for orders of $75 or more and 30% off orders of $150 and more. Last year she just offered discounts on select items, not blanket discounts.

“We gave out our biggest incentive ever for shoppers to come out with discounts and promos. I certainly think that that was necessary this year,” she said.

Beltz’ customers gravitated toward prices either under $20 or around $100. At her shops, Philadelphia Eagles and Taylor Swift merchandise were the top sellers, including $14 socks and $99 sweaters.

“One is the impulse category, where if it’s under $20, they’ll buy it. No matter what,” she said. “And then the second category would be for really people that are coming in looking for a gift. We’re pushing the $100 sale. We try to keep our best sellers, like those sweaters and those items that people are really grabbing for a nice holiday gift at $99, right under the $100 mark.”

‘Extra touch’

Not all small businesses can use discounts to drive business, since margins are often tight.

Between Friends Boutique in Philadelphia is using events to drive holiday traffic instead. They held a “Sweater Explosion” event at 8 a.m. on Black Friday where they served hot apple cider and hot chocolate with marshmallows and promoted different styles of sweaters.

Sweaters under $100 were big sellers, along with $25 reversible silk scarves that feature art from impressionists like Monet.

“Our customers appreciated that little extra touch of laughs during the holidays. Coming in and smelling the cinnamon in the air felt like the holidays have arrived,” co-owner Claudia Averette said. Sales are up so far from last year, she added.

They’re also hosting a “Bourbon and Bow Tie” event on Dec. 20 to promote the fact that they carry men’s accessories as well, like bow ties, socks and scarves.

An event helps get exposure, Averette said. “It’s a great marketing strategy,” she said.
