Dartmouth sorority, fraternity members face charges after death of student, 20, at party

0

A sorority and two members of a fraternity have been charged, months after an ill-fated party led to the death of a 20-year-old student at Dartmouth.

The Alpha Phi sorority was charged as a corporation by police in Hanover, New Hampshire, with one count of facilitating an underage alcohol house, and two members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity were charged with providing alcohol to a person under 21.

Dartmouth is located in Hanover.

The charges stem from an off-campus party July 6 that Won Jang, 20, attended.

After the party hosted by Alpha Phi, where alcohol was allegedly provided by Beta Alpha Omega, some of the attendees went for a swim in the Connecticut River, police said, adding most of the partygoers were under 21.

Jang, whose family said he couldn’t swim, went with the group but was accidentally left behind when it began to rain and others left.

He was reported missing the next day, and authorities later found his body in the river about 65 feet from shore.

“Dartmouth has long valued the contributions that Greek organizations bring to the student experience, when they are operating within their stated values and standards,” Dartmouth said in a statement shared with Fox News Digital.

“These organizations, as well as all Dartmouth students and community members, have a responsibility to ensure Dartmouth remains a safe, respectful, equitable and inclusive community for students, faculty and staff.

Israeli, Emirati officials investigate disappearance of Chabad rabbi Zvi Kogan

An Orthodox Jewish rabbi is feared dead after “terrorist involvement” was found related to his recent disappearance, prompting an investigation by the Mossad.

Rabbi Zvi Kogan, a Chabad emissary, was a resident of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates when he went missing Thursday. He is a citizen of both Moldova and Israel.

According to his LinkedIn, Kogan works as a recruiter and is “passionate about volunteering and serving [his] community.”

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced its investigation into the unusual disappearance on Saturday. The statement said the disappearance appears to be related to “a terrorist incident” but did not elaborate.

“Since his disappearance, and given information indicating that this is a terrorist incident, an active investigation has been going on in the country,” the office’s statement posted on X said. “Israeli security and intelligence orgs, concerned for Kogan’s safety and wellbeing, have been working tirelessly on this case.

“This also serves as a reminder that for a while, per the recommendations of the NSC, there has been a level 3 – moderate travel warning issued for the UAE, with a recommendation to avoid any non-essential travel there, and for those who are in the country – take extra precautions.”

UAE officials are also investigating. In a statement released Saturday night, Emerati official Majed Al Mansoori “affirmed that the Ministry is closely monitoring the case of the missing Moldovan citizen, Zvi Kogan, and is in close contact with his family to provide them with all means of necessary support.

“His Excellency also highlighted that the Ministry is in continuous contact with the Embassy of Moldova in Abu Dhabi in this regard,” the press release, which identified Kogan as a citizen of Moldova, added. “His Excellency underscored that the Ministry of Interior (MoI) is implementing extensive measures in its search for the missing person, affirming that the relevant authorities in the UAE have initiated the search operations and investigations immediately following the receipt of the report.”

The Chabad movement asked its social media followers to “please pray” for the missing rabbi Saturday.

Nick Saban warns Texas A&M ahead of team’s visit to Auburn: ‘That place is haunted’

0

During his 17 seasons patrolling the Alabama football sideline, Nick Saban became familiar with competing against Auburn, the Crimson Tide’s in-state rival.

The retired Saban works as an analyst for ESPN’s “College GameDay.” The popular television program was in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday for the matchup between Ohio State and Indiana.

The Buckeyes entered the Week 13 contest No. 2 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, while Indiana was slotted fifth. Ohio State handed Indiana its first loss of the season.

During a discussion about Saturday’s Southeastern Conference showdown between Auburn and the visiting Texas A&M Aggies, Saban issued a warning about playing at Jordan-Hare Stadium, suggesting the football stadium was “haunted.”

“Well, I would be alerting Texas A&M, because, in my opinion, 17 years going to Auburn and playing at Jordan-Hare [Stadium], that place is haunted,” Saban said. “I guarantee it.

“The way we lost games and the way we won games there, it’s unbelievable. Kick Six, and then the ‘gravedigger’ last year. I mean, I’m telling you, the place is haunted.”

The Iron Bowl, the name for the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, has resulted in surprising and memorable finishes on several occasions.

The “Kick Six” play was a reference to a game-winning 109-yard return on a missed field goal as time expired during the 2013 edition of the game.

Saban coached the Crimson Tide to victory more times than not in the Iron Bowl, going 12-5 during his career. But Alabama had a 5-4 record in games played at Auburn’s home stadium.

Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders pushes official in loss that could keep Buffaloes out of College Football Playoff

0

Entering Saturday, No. 16 Colorado controlled its own destiny for the College Football Playoff. Now, the Buffaloes face a steep hill.

The Buffaloes lost to unranked Kansas, 37-21, in their quest to earn an automatic bid in the 12-team postseason bracket.

The Jayhawks got out to a 17-0 lead on their Senior Day. But, early in the third quarter, the Buffaloes cut the deficit to two points after Travis Hunter’s second touchdown, which included a Heisman pose.

But Kansas responded with a 10-play touchdown drive, then forced a three-and-out and found the end zone again to lead 37-21 in the fourth quarter. Running back Devin Neal scored all four Jayhawks touchdowns.

Colorado’s next drive resulted in a turnover on downs, all but icing the game.

In the third quarter, there was a scrum between players, and officials intervened.

While that was happening, Shedeur Sanders shoved one of the officials from behind, prompting rules analyst Mike Pereira to suggest Sanders was “lucky” he didn’t get ejected.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM GIVES UP EMBARRASSING SAFETY AFTER DELAYING GAME BECAUSE OF WET BALL

It was a microcosm of what was a frustrating day for the Buffaloes, who lost their third game of the season.

Kansas’ win marked the first time in FBS history a team with a losing record won three straight games against ranked opponents. The Jayhawks are 5-6 on the season.

It remains to be seen what Colorado’s path is for the College Football Playoff.

Arizona State, now 9-2 with a 6-2 conference record, jumped Colorado (8-3, 6-2) in the Big 12 standings by beating BYU. BYU and Colorado share the same conference record, and BYU’s overall record is 9-2. Iowa State (8-2, 5-2) faces Utah at 7:30 p.m. ET and would jump Colorado with a victory.

More Republican women buying guns than before, Gallup says

0

A recent Gallup poll found more Republican women are becoming gun owners than before, while gun ownership among Democratic-leaning men declines.

According to the Gallup survey published Thursday, the percentage of Republican female gun owners has increased from 19% from 2007-2012 to 33% from 2019-2024.

Twenty-two percent of Republican women surveyed in 2013-2018 told Gallup they owned guns, meaning there has been a 50% increase in gun ownership among conservative women since.

“Meanwhile, the rate has fallen seven percentage points among Democratic men, to 29%, and is down five points among independent men, to 39%,” Gallup added. “Republican men remain the most likely gun owners among gender and party identification subgroups, at 60%.”

The rate of gun ownership nationwide is still around 30%, Gallup noted, but the number “masks a sharp increase in ownership among Republican women offsetting declines among Democratic and independent men.

“Meanwhile, ownership remains high among Republican men but is relatively scarce among Democratic and independent women.”

Men are still generally more likely to own guns than women, and the study concluded that gun ownership “may be influenced by one’s political beliefs more than in the past, likely because of the salience of the gun issue in political campaigns and political culture today.”

Vice President Kamala Harris recently announced she owns a gun, prompting surprise across the country, but Republican women were not necessarily wooed by the admission.

“I have a Glock, and I’ve had it for quite some time,” Harris said during a “60 Minutes” interview.

Earlier in November, Fox News Digital spoke with female gun owners who reacted to the statement, calling it “smokescreen campaign rhetoric.”

“I do not believe that she is a gun owner that practices and supports our right to protect ourselves,” Jane Milhans, a gun instructor, said.

“When Kamala Harris started talking about owning a Glock, I felt nothing,” Amara Barnes, founder of the Women Gun Owners Association of America, told Fox News Digital. “We all realize that it’s pandering and virtue signaling to the right, and she’s hoping that we’re too dumb not to realize that she is completely anti-gun.”

Matthew McConaughey shares advice mom gave him after his arrest for playing bongos naked while high in 1999

0

Matthew McConaughey recalled how his mother, Kay McConaughey, supported him after he was arrested for playing bongo drums while naked and high in 1999.

The 55-year-old actor detailed the notorious incident in his bestselling 2020 memoir, “Greenlights.” At last weekend’s Texas Book Festival, which featured McConaughey and Malcolm Gladwell as the headlining authors, the Oscar winner joined director Richard Linklater for a conversation about “Greenlights.”

While speaking with Linklater, McConaughey remembered the advice Kay shared with him after the infamous arrest.

“‘You go outside in front of that media, and you hold your head high,'” the Texas native recalled Kay telling him, according to People magazine. “‘I know what you were doing last night playing bongos, smoking that funny stuff in your birthday suit, and you’ve done it many times before. And I know you’re going to do it again.'”

McConaughey told Linklater, who directed the actor in his breakthrough movie, “Dazed and Confused,” that Kay had shared similar words of wisdom with him before.

“‘Don’t walk into a place like you want to buy it, walk in it like you own it.’ She tells me that before we go to prom. She tells me that on the morning before I went in to go do a screen test for ‘A Time to Kill,’” he said.

In “Greenlights,” McConaughey wrote that the arrest occurred after he attended a football game during which his alma mater’s team, the Texas Longhorns, squared off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

After the Longhorns triumphed over the Huskers, McConaughey, who was 29 at the time, recalled that Austin was “on fire” and “it was time to celebrate.”

“I partied through the night into Sunday, and through Sunday night without sleeping a wink,” he wrote. “At 2:30 that Monday morning, I finally decided to wind down. It was time to lower the lights, get undressed, open up the window and let the jasmine scent from my garden come inside.

“It was time to smoke a bowl and listen to the beautiful African melodic beats of Henri Dikongué play through my home speakers. It was time to stand over my drum set and follow the rhythm of the blues before they got to Memphis on my favorite Afro-Cuban drum born of ceremony and speaking in tongues, the congas.”

“You go outside in front of that media, and you hold your head high.”

However, McConaughey wrote that his nude jam session was unexpectedly interrupted.

“What I didn’t know was that while I was banging away in my bliss, two Austin policemen also thought it was time to barge into my house unannounced, wrestle me to the ground with nightsticks, handcuff me and pin me to the floor,” he recalled.

McConaughey remembered that one officer told him that he was being charged with “disturbing the peace, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest.'”

“F— you, motherf—–! You broke in my house! F–, yeah, I resisted!” the “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” star recalled yelling at the officer

McConaughey wrote that he refused when the other officer tried to wrap a blanket around the actor’s naked body.

‘”Ohhhh no!” I barked. “I’m not putting s— on! My naked ass is proof I was mindin’ my own business!”’ he remembered telling the officer.

As the actor was being escorted to the police car, he saw that his arrest had attracted a crowd.

McConaughey noted that “word must have spread over the police scanner as to just who had been arrested because there on the street were six lit-up cop cars and about 40 of my neighbors.”

After arriving at the Austin Police Department, McConaughey remembered that a fellow inmate convinced him to put on a “pair of men’s orange institutional pants.”

McConaughey initially had told the inmate that his naked state was “proof of my innocence.”

“‘We all innocent, man. Trust me, you do wanna put these on,'” the actor remembered the inmate saying.

“Maybe it was his honest eyes or the fact that he was a fellow offender, or maybe it was the sudden realization that, when a six-foot, six-inch jailbird built like a brick s—house tells you, ‘You do wanna put on some pants before you go in the clink,’ it’s probably best to listen,” McConaughey wrote.

After spending the night in jail, McConaughey was visited by Judge Penny Wilkov and criminal defense attorney Joe Turner.

Wilkov decided to dismiss disturbing the peace and possession misdemeanor charges and allowed McConaughey to be released on bond for resisting arrest.

McConaughey wrote that Turner advised him to leave the jail from the back entrance because reporters had gathered in front of the building.

The actor wrote that he felt “guilty” and was unsure how to handle his departure from jail. At that point, he called Kay.

“Looking for some fearless consolation, I decided to call my mom before I chose which way to leave my first prison stint,” McConaughey wrote. “Maybe it was the fact that while I was sure she would have no mercy for my circumstance, at the same time, I knew she would pour a drink and toast to how it was I got into it.

“Was it going to be her that answered or was it going to be that new groupie fan? I didn’t know. Turns out it was both.

“‘They what, Matthew?! Broke into your house!? Those son of a bitches, you keep your head up,” he recalled Kay saying. “‘There is nothing wrong with smokin’ a little fun stuff and playing your drums naked at night in your own home; who do they think they are comin in your house like that?!’

“Just what I needed,” McConaughey wrote. “I hung up and decided to stride toward the media mob out front instead of sneaking out the back.

“Two days later, BONGO NAKED T-shirts were all over Austin.”

During McConaughey’s appearance at the Texas Book Fair, Linklater pointed out that McConaughey wasn’t the only author in the family.

“You’re not the first McConaughey to write a memoir,” the director told him.

“Your mom beat you to it,” Linklater added, referring to Kay’s 2008 self-published memoir.

“You want to know what my mom’s memoir is called? ‘I Amaze Myself.’ She has a bumper sticker — still does to this day — ‘I Amaze Myself,'” McConaughey said.

“She’s 92, and you can’t argue with it,” he added.

CNN host tells Democrats that party is dominated by ‘elites’ who risk ‘groupthink’

CNN host Abby Phillip called on the Democratic Party to reject “groupthink” and allow for viewpoints to be heard, especially in news media and in elite circles like the Ivy League.

“You can create interesting content that is not safe,” Phillip said in a panel at Harvard Kennedy School, first noted by Mediaite. “We’ve had some moments that are not comfortable happen at the table.”

Phillip, a graduate of Harvard University, said that elites, especially in the Democratic Party, increasingly only build consensus in conversations with each other.

“I have observed that elites increasingly talk only to each other and come to believe that because there is consensus among them that that consensus is shared broadly and there are not enough voices that are confident enough to disagree and to present alternatives,” Phillip said.

“We as a society need to find better ways to uplift divergent voices. Otherwise, we will be victims of groupthink,” she continued.

Phillip also directly referenced an influential “activist class” in the Democratic Party.

“And there is an activist class, and this is particularly acute in the Democratic Party right now, there is an activist class in the Democratic Party that is multiracial, multiethnic,” Phillip said. “It is diverse, but it’s an activist class. And so because of that, they’re not able to see outside of that.”

Phillip said that Republicans faced the “same fundamental issue” before President-elect Trump “broke them out of it.”

“Democrats are in that place now where they have to break out of it,” she said. “And I think it is a real problem. It’s not as simple as wokeness or whatever. It’s about people who are being incentivized to think about issues in a particular way. And usually it’s that light switches either on or off. There’s no nuance because they’re activists. They’re paid to kind of be in this lane and if you’re somewhere in between, then what’s the point? But most people are not in one lane or another.”

“There needs to be a greater understanding of that,” Phillip said.

“There needs to be more courage among people to speak out and to voice diverging opinions,” she added. “Otherwise, you know, I think it’s a I think it’s a real issue, and it’s not just the Ivy League. I think it’s elitism in general.”

Stephen A. Smith’s claim that Giants reached out to ESPN about Elle Duncan’s criticism is false: report

Stephen A. Smith launched into a rant about the New York Giants on “First Take” that went viral Friday.

Smith claimed the Giants had reached out to ESPN complaining about Elle Duncan’s segment on Daniel Jones.

In a post on X, Pat Hanlon, the Giants’ senior vice president of communications, took exception to Duncan’s segment.

However, the New York Post reported that nobody from the Giants actually reached out to ESPN about the segment.

“The New York Giants, respectfully, shut the hell up. Y’all are awful as an organization. You won a Super Bowl in 2007. You won a Super Bowl in 2011. Outside of that, since 2011, that’s 13 years. The Giants have made the playoffs twice. They’ve won one playoff game,” Smith said.

“And you’ve got the nerve to sit up there and call the offices and complain to executives about somebody that went on national television to do their job. Why don’t you do your damn job as an organization?

“This is a performance-based business,” Smith said. “Nobody is talking about your personal life. Nobody has gotten into anything. Your performance was put on public display, and you were 20 games under .500. You have been abhorrent. You have been awful as the quarterback for the New York Giants, and, on top of it all, they let go of Saquon Barkley to make sure they took care of you. They gave you the bag instead of him, which is another blemish.”

During the rant, Duncan smirked and sipped from her mug as Smith came to her defense.

Hanlon said it was “mind boggling” “that an #ESPN personality would mock Daniel Jones’ statement.”

“Given what has happened at that company over past few years, tone deaf,” Hanlon wrote.

Duncan’s segment criticizing Jones aired on Thursday during “SportsCenter.”

“We normally reserve ‘Taking the Elle’ for Fridays, but Giants quarterback Daniel Jones just did something so inexplicable that we made an exception. Judge says ex-coach was within ‘protected speech’ in opposing trans athlete’s inclusion in girls competition

0

A former track coach is in a fight to get his job back, saying the school district he was fired from violated his free speech, and a federal judge in the case may agree.

John Parks is taking a legal stand after allegedly being fired from Lake Oswego High School for sending a letter to Oregon state officials concerning laws related to transgender athletes.

The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) says students can compete based on their “consistently asserted gender identity.”

Additionally, the OSAA rules state “once a transgender student has notified the student’s school of their gender identity, the student shall be consistently treated as that gender for purposes of eligibility for athletics and activities, provided that if the student has tried out or participated in an activity, the student may not participate during that same season on a team of the other gender.”

In May, Parks wrote a letter to the OSAA encouraging the state to adopt a transgender athlete policy similar to World Aquatics by creating an open division where “all sex and gender identities” are welcome to compete. He also sent letters to state Sen. Rob Wagner, including one after Oregon’s state championships. In the letters, Parks argued that state’s laws, as currently written, do a disservice to girls sports.

In a hearing on Friday, Parks’ lawyer said the district’s decision to fire Parks after the email was a “violation of his free speech,” and he should “be restored to his job,” according to Oregon Live.

U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon said during a hearing he believed the email “[fell] within protected speech made by a private citizen.”

Parks is seeking a court order to return to his job as the school’s track coach and a special education assistant while the legal case remains ongoing. The district, however, says he was not fired. It says his temporary contracts expired, and the school was not required to extend them.

SCHOOL DISTRICT DEFENDS DECISION TO BAN PARENTS WHO WORE ‘XX’ WRISTBANDS AT DAUGHTERS’ GAME WITH TRANS ATHLETE

Buck Dougherty, senior counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, said in a statement in July, “Coach Parks was retaliated against, falsely accused of discriminatory behavior, denied an appeal and fired — just for exercising his constitutional right to free speech as a private citizen.”

A Lake Oswego School District spokesperson previously confirmed that Parks was no longer employed by the district. The school district stopped short of going into the circumstances surrounding Parks’ departure.

Rutgers’ Greg Schiano defends timeout that led to shocking Hail Mary loss on Senior Day

0

Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano called a timeout Saturday, seconds before a 58-yard field goal attempt by Illinois kicker Ethan Moczulski. Rutgers led 31-30, and it’s a score that would have held after Moczulski’s kick sailed wide left — if not for Schiano’s timeout.

The timeout voided the play, and Illinois head coach Bret Bielema was able to see how the wind affected the kick from the sideline.  Bielema put his offense back on the field instead of trying the kick again, and his team scored the game-winning touchdown on a 40-yard catch by Pat Bryant. Illinois won 38-31.

Schiano had to answer for the timeout after being blamed by fans for one of the most shocking and avoidable losses of the college football season.

“Retrospectively, I wish hadn’t,” Schiano told reporters of the decision to call the timeout.

Still, Schiano offered a defense of the decision.

“But you know, I’m not going to sit here and say I wish I hadn’t because it didn’t work out. If it worked out, I would sit here and say, ‘Yeah, I’m glad I did.’ I’ve said before. It was a good call because it worked. I’ve stood up here and said it’s a bad call because it didn’t work. That’s the way it goes. You have about 12 seconds to make decisions, and you make them,” Schiano said.

NO. 1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECRUIT FLIPS COMMITMENT FROM LSU TO MICHIGAN IN SHOCKING MOVE

At the time, Rutgers was preparing for a potential kick from a player whose career-long field goal was 59 yards, a yard longer than what he would have needed to beat Rutgers with his leg.

Still, the winds were so strong that nearby flags blew with ferocity, and the kick would have been going into the wind.

The 58-year-old coach also explained how and why the team came to the decision to call a timeout before the kick.

“We were going to call a timeout anyway. Maybe I should have done it before he kicked the ball,” Schiano said. “So, it wouldn’t have told, ‘Oh, gee, that wind is strong. We can’t make that kick.’ But we had to make sure we knew what we were doing. I said, ‘Hey, we have a timeout,’ there’s no more media timeouts. So, we got to go. I said, ‘That’s all right, we’re going to call a timeout.'”

With the Illinois offense on the field for the next play, Schiano’s defense blitzed, leaving fewer players in coverage for a potential pass down the field. The pass to Bryant was on a crossing route and wasn’t to the end zone, but he outran Rutgers defenders for the score.

Schiano reiterated his intention was to win the game.

“You do it and win the game, it’s right call,” Schiano said.

“I don’t defend, nor do I pat myself on the back when they are good decisions. That’s your job is to make the decisions. You’re a decision-maker. I just feel, like I said, the biggest thing is I feel pain for is those guys. It was their last game in that stadium, and they couldn’t leave with a W. They accomplished a lot, but I really wanted that for them. But we don’t always get what we want in life.”

Rutgers fell to 6-5 and has already clinched a bowl game appearance. Illinois improved to 8-3, preserving its spot in the national rankings.
