How to stop someone from tracking you on your phone

How would you feel if someone were spying on your every move, possibly listening to your conversations, and maybe even accessing your personal data without your consent? Would you even know if that were happening to you? We recently received this intriguing email from Marybeth of Wilmington, Delaware:

“Is there a way to determine if someone has installed tracking software on your phone?

This is such a great question, because the last thing you want is for the wrong person to know your every move. Sharing your location with people from your cell phone should happen with your consent and only with people you trust, not creeps who have found sneaky ways to track you.

Detecting tracking software on your phone

First, let’s answer Marybeth’s question right off the bat.  Yes, there are some ways to determine whether someone has installed tracking software on your phone. Here are some signs that you can look for:

HOW TO CHECK THAT YOU’RE NOT ACCIDENTALLY SHARING YOUR LOCATION

Could someone be tracking me on my cellphone?

The truth is that, yes, your phone can be tracked. Sometimes, unsavory characters will find ways to hack into your device to see where you’re going. Other times, you might have apps on your phone that are tracking your location in the background without you even realizing it.

Whatever the case may be, there are ways that you may be able to tell when someone has hacked into your device and is tracking you.

Common signs someone has hacked into your device and is tracking you 

Strange or inappropriate pop-ups: Nonstop pop-ups, especially bright, flashing ads or X-rated content, are a big indicator that your phone has been compromised.

Texts or calls not made by you: If you notice texts or calls from your phone that you didn’t make, you may have had your phone hacked.

Higher than normal data usage: If your phone behavior has stayed the same, and your data usage has skyrocketed, it’s time to investigate.

Apps you don’t recognize on your phone: If you notice new apps popping up once you already own the phone, there may be malware involved.

Battery draining quickly: If your phone use habits have remained the same, but your battery is draining more quickly than normal, hacking may be to blame.

Seeing an orange or a green dot appear: These orange or green dots would show up at the top of your phone screen, indicating that someone could be listening to you or recording you. To find out more about this, click here.

What to do if you think you’ve been hacked

If you think your phone has been hacked, there are some steps you can take to address it.

Contact law enforcement for assistance if you think you’ve been hacked and believe that that hacker is tracking your location
We recommend letting your contacts know that your phone has been hacked and that they shouldn’t click any suspicious-looking links they may have received from you.
You can also delete any suspicious apps that came from a third-party source (in other words, not the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store)
You can also check for any unauthorized GPS tracking by reviewing the list of apps that have access to your location.

What can I do to prevent my phone from being tracked?

The good news is that although your phone could be tracked, there are plenty of steps you can take to significantly reduce the risk of this happening. Here are some of my best tips for you to follow.

1. Use antivirus software

Keeping hackers from tracking your devices can be prevented if you have good antivirus software installed.  Not only can antivirus software block malware that can track you, but it will also prevent you from clicking on any potential malicious links in the first place that would allow hackers to gain access to your personal information.

2. Use a VPN

Consider using a VPN to protect against who can track you and identify your potential location on websites that you visit.  Many sites can read your IP address and, depending on their privacy settings, may display the city from which you are corresponding. A VPN will disguise your IP address to show an alternate location.

3. Don’t use a public WiFi network

If you’re not using a VPN, then you should definitely not be using a public WiFi network. This is one of the easiest ways for a hacker to break into your device and start tracking your location, because you have little to no protection. Scam hotspots historically are easily identified by generic names like “Free WiFi” to lure people to connect to their networks.  Cybercriminals have gotten savvier by using similar names of popular legitimate hotspots.

4. Turn off location settings for certain apps

HOW HACKERS COULD HIJACK YOUR TRAVEL REWARDS PROGRAMS AND DRAIN YOUR MILES

As I mentioned before, certain apps on your phone could still be tracking your location even if you have location tracking turned off within your phone’s settings. To prevent this from happening, you have to make sure that location services are turned off for each app that you don’t want tracking you. Here’s how to do it.

How to turn off app tracking on an iPhone

Go to your Settings app
Scroll down and click Privacy & Security

Select Tracking 

A list of apps that you have permitted to track your activity will appear here. You can turn off ones that have no use tracking you by toggling off, like Twitter or Instagram.  However, apps that actively use location services like Uber and Door Dash should be left on so that you can be located when using them.

How to turn off app tracking on an Android

Settings may vary depending on your Android phone’s manufacturer 

Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to reveal quick settings
Touch and hold Location
Tap App permission
Find the apps that use your phone (e.g., Facebook or Instagram) location under:Allowed all the timeAllowed only while in useAsk every time
Allowed all the time
Allowed only while in use
Ask every time
Tap the relevant app to change the permissions

5. Check your Google account

No, it’s not an individual, but you don’t want big tech tracking you either. Your Google account could have a history of devices that are tracking you, and Google has been known to collect tons of data about your location history, web and app activity and more. However, you can make sure that your location settings are adjusted so that this doesn’t happen without your consent.

Open the Google app
Click on the profile picture icon in the top right corner
Click Google Account 
Click Data & privacy in the menu bar at the top
Scroll down, and select Location History
Any devices tracking you will be listed. If you do not want this, select Turn off or Turn off and delete activity

Tap your email
Click Manage Your Google Account

6. Use a strong password

You should make sure that your phone is always locked when you’re not using it. Create strong passwords for your accounts and devices, and avoid using the same password for multiple online accounts. Consider using a password manager to securely store and generate complex passwords.

7. Enable biometrics and 2-factor authentication

Along with a strong password, you should also have facial recognition or fingerprint enabled, depending on what your smartphone offers. This prevents unauthorized access to your phone and the installation of tracking apps. Be sure to enable 2-factor authentication or 2FA, which is a security method that requires two forms of identification, as an extra shield that will prevent a hacker from getting into your accounts.

8. Keep your phone updated

Make sure you’re always checking for software updates on your phone if you don’t have automatic updates turned on already. You can do this by going into your phone’s settings and checking for software updates. These updates often have important security and bug fixes that can further prevent your phone from being hacked. You should also be regularly checking for updates to all the apps on your phone, as those will get security and bug fixes as well.

9. Use a more private browser

Google is the default browser for tons of people on the internet. However, the tech giant has also been known to keep track of people’s data so that it can send more targeted ads. That’s why there are some great alternatives for your desktop and laptop browsers as well as your mobile devices that you can use to browse freely without having to worry about your data being taken.

Baby Remi is just getting started on solid foods — but it seems she already has a favorite. Video recorded by mom Kaleigh Butler shows the infant’s over-the-top reaction as she takes a first nibble — followed by a giant chomp.

Cookbook author and blogger Tieghan Gerard’s new cookbook, “Half Baked Harvest: Quick & Cozy,” is full of recipes that come together quickly and are excellent for feeding a family, she told Fox News Digital.

“It’s just the way that I cook, every single day and at home and for my family,” Gerard said. “I really wanted to create a cookbook that reflected the style of cooking that I love so much.”

Gerard, author of the popular cooking blog “Half Baked Harvest,” said that one of the reasons she grew to love cooking is that she’s able to cook for those around her.

“I was so excited to be able to create a cookbook that really just reflected how I cook,” she said. The recipes are “simple” and “effortless – just, I think, what everybody needs year-round.”

One of her favorite recipes, which she shared with Fox News Digital, is for an appetizer she invented many years ago: pizza pretzels.

“I love the pizza pretzels,” she said. “They sound so funny, but they’re so good and so easy to make – and always a crowd favorite.”

The dish starts with “kind of a larger, hard pretzel” and is topped with cheese, “pizza seasoning” and pepperoni before it’s baked.

“It’s such a funny appetizer, but it’s so good.”

“If you’re vegetarian, you could also leave the pepperoni off,” she said. “It’s such a funny appetizer, but it’s so good.”

The idea for pizza pretzels came when her older brother, Creighton, was hungry before dinner time, the Colorado-based Gerard told Fox News Digital.

“I made Chex mix earlier in the day,” she said – so she had pretzels on hand. She figured she should top them with cheese and pepperoni, thinking he would love it.

“Everyone ate them right up,” she said.

Serves many

Ingredients

½ cup chopped fresh basil

½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

⅓ cup grated Asiago cheese

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped or grated

1 tablespoon dried thyme

1 tablespoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon crushed fennel seeds

Crushed red pepper flakes

12 Snyder’s Olde Tyme pretzels

2 tablespoons, salted butter, melted

12 slices provolone cheese (about 4 ounces)

12 slices sandwich-style pepperoni (optional)

Warmed marinara sauce, for serving

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a small bowl, combine the basil, Parmesan, Asiago, garlic, thyme, oregano, fennel seeds and red pepper flakes. Stir to mix well.

3. On the prepared baking sheet, toss the pretzels with the melted butter, then arrange in a single layer. Sprinkle about ⅔ of the herbed cheese mixture over the top.

4. Bake until the cheese is just beginning to melt and the garlic is fragrant, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and carefully place a slice of provolone on each pretzel, tearing the slices to fit. Top with a slice of pepperoni, if using.

5. Bake until the cheese is melted and the pepperoni is just beginning to crisp, 10 minutes. Remove and sprinkle with the remaining herbed cheese mixture. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.

The world’s most popular podcast host joined forces with the world’s richest man this week to game out how they could reinvent MSNBC if it’s sold off by its parent company.

X owner Elon Musk joked this week he may buy the liberal news network and “The Joe Rogan Experience” host Joe Rogan chimed in, offering to replace MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow on her show while adopting her signature look. .

“If you buy MSNBC I would like Rachel Maddow’s job. I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies,” Rogan wrote on Friday in response to a post by Musk.

Musk trolled the outlet on Friday while sharing a post about reports that Comcast may sell off MSNBC.

Comcast on Wednesday officially announced it would spin off several NBCUniversal cable networks, including MSNBC, in a move that will dramatically shake up the landscape of legacy media as the liberal cable outlet will no longer be affiliated with NBC News.

The billionaire captioned the post with his own statement, writing, “The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely,” having fun with the idea of buying the liberal outlet and converting it to a conservative news outlet.

Rogan commented on Musk’s new post with his offer to replace Maddow on the new MSNBC. The X owner replied, “Deal.”

Some conservatives found the idea exciting and hilarious.

Comedian Tim Young commented, “Please God make this happen.”

Conservative author Jim Hanson commented, “Can you imagine the freak out level on the Left right now? They know Elon could do this on a whim.”

Author Carol Roth mentioned ABC’s liberal talk show “The View” in her comment.

“I’d like to throw my hat in the ring for a panelist spot on ‘The Normal View,’” she wrote.

The MSNBC host, whose show “The Rachel Maddow Show” airs on the network on Mondays, recently signed a new contract to stay with the company for the foreseeable future. This comes as the network’s ratings have plummeted – including ratings for her show – especially since President-elect Donald Trump won earlier this month.

Maddow, who built her program around passionate criticism of Trump for years and famously pushed since-debunked theories tying him to Russia, has lost nearly half of her viewers since Trump’s victory. “The Rachel Maddow Show” averaged 1.4 million viewers since the election, shedding 41% of its viewers. Things are even worse among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25-54, where Maddow averaged 236,000 in 2024 but only 118,000 since the election, for a 50% drop.

Musk mused about buying the liberal news network in another post on Friday, stating, “MSNBC is going up for sale. Should I buy it? I would like to fire Rachel Maddow (for fun) and then turn it into a channel that reports the top stories from X each day. Citizen reporting on cable news!”

Musk played with the idea even more on Sunday morning, posting a meme depicting him trying to fight the temptation of buying MSNBC.

MSNBC did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Harris disappears from spotlight, vacations in Hawaii after election loss

Vice President Kamala Harris has kept a low profile since losing the election to President-elect Trump, vacationing in Hawaii with second gentleman Doug Emhoff since last week.

Harris arrived in Kalaoa, Hawaii, on Tuesday for what is expected to be a weeklong trip, a break from the rigorous campaign schedule she kept over the last couple of months but also from her duties as vice president, where she retains her tie-breaking vote as president of the Senate during the last few months of President Biden’s administration.

The timing of the vice president’s trip has generated questions, with some noting that many DNC staffers are uncertain about their futures while others had been surprised by sudden layoffs.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the Harris vacation during a Thursday briefing, arguing there was nothing “wrong” with the vice president taking a vacation.

“The vice president has taken time off to go spend time with her family. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I think she deserves some time to be with her family and to have some downtime. She has worked very hard over – for the last four years, and her taking a couple of days to be with her family, good for her. Good for her,” Jean-Pierre said.

Harris is still expected to play a critical role in helping Biden push through several judges as Democrats race against the clock to top the 234 that were confirmed during Trump’s first term, according to an NBC News report last week.

With the Democrats holding such a slim majority in the upper chamber, Harris broke the record last year for casting the most decisive votes of any vice president in history, the report notes, with Democrats expected to lean on the vice president once again in the coming weeks.

“This is something they want to clear the decks on,” a senior Harris aide told NBC News.

“She will definitely be available for any tie votes,” a second senior aide said.

“It is a big focus,” a third source told the outlet.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., also said Tuesday that she was given notice that Harris would be available, though the senator had not personally talked to Harris, according to the report.

“The goal is to fill every judicial nomination that we can,” Warren said.

Meanwhile, a senior Harris aide told NBC News that the vice president had already delayed her trip in case she was needed in the Senate, though now many of those votes are expected to take place in December when Harris is back in Washington.

The Harris campaign and White House did not immediately respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., acknowledged that Democrats had a major problem when it came to border security, resulting in Republicans securing control of both chambers of Congress and the White House.

Fetterman did not pull punches in reflecting on his party during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.”

“Well, one area where we kind of lost ourselves was the border,” the Democratic senator stated. “And I’ve been on this network, you know, months, months ago saying, ‘Hey, you know, it can’t be controversial for our party to have pro-immigration, but we need a secure border.’ And when we ask or demand people to not believe what they see, and see those kind of numbers, that that’s not a problem. It’s like, well, then you lose about that 100%,”

“I’ve tried to describe – you have up to 300,000 people – encounters – per month. And I put that in perspective with Pennsylvania. I’m like, that’s the size of Pittsburgh showing up in one month,” Fetterman told host Gillian Turner. “It’s like, what’s going to happen for those folks? If we want them [to have] the American Dream for those people, how can we possibly deliver that? Where do they go? And we can’t pretend that that’s not a significant issue. And we got to address that.”

Democrats have traditionally defined themselves as the anti-war party, but Fetterman seemed to suggest it lost its footing when progressives grew critical of Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists following the Oct. 7 attacks. Fetterman said Israel’s effort against Hamas and Ukraine’s fight against Russia are two “just” wars that remain ongoing.

In regard to Israel, Fetterman said he “never supported a cease-fire, and that was the right thing.”

“I said I was going to follow Israel. And since they refused to have that cease-fire, they have eliminated and broken Hamas, and Hezbollah, Hezbollah was supposed to be like the ultimate bada– in the Middle East, and now they were a bunch of Keystone Cops, and Iran has just been exposed, as you know, they really can’t fight about anything. So that’s been a significant development here,” Fetterman said.

“And with respect to Ukraine, Ukraine was invaded, and for me, for me, it’s about standing on the side of democracy,” he continued. “And I was very supportive about that aid. And I don’t understand if the other side would stop delivering that kind of aid. That’s a disagreement, but I’ve been very, very clear supporting Israel and Ukraine.”

Turner noted that President-elect Trump’s transition team has touted their foreign policy and national security team as the most pro-Israel in American history. That includes Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., tapped to become secretary of state, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., nominated for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Huckabee, chosen as U.S. ambassador to Israel, and Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., as national security adviser.

“In terms of the incoming administration, I actually like what I see in terms of being very, very strong pro-Israel,” Fetterman said, adding that Israel has made “magnificent kinds of progress… generating longer term peace by destroying Hamas, Hezbollah, and demonstrating that Iran, really, doesn’t have the kind of capability to deliver any kinds of damage.”

He indicated he would support Rubio, and potentially Dr. Mehmet Oz, who Fetterman defeated during a contentious Senate race.

Fetterman said on Sunday that he knows “it got kinda ugly” in his race against Oz, but he “doesn’t have any kind of bitterness” and “is open to dialogue,” adding, “I’m not sure why that’s controversial.”

Simone Biles was in Chicago, where her husband stars for the home team, to watch the Bears’ game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Jonathan Owens is in his first season with the Chicago Bears after spending his previous two seasons in Green Bay with the Packers.

Well, Owens may just be the early MVP of the Bears in Sunday’s NFC North bout.

Vikings running back Aaron Jones took a handoff from Sam Darnold at the one-yard line, but Owens stiffed him at the line, then ripped the ball out of his hands and recovered the very fumble he forced.

He and his Bears teammates celebrated together, but he wanted a moment for himself.

Owens took the celebration up a notch by posing in a gymnast style after they stick landings; obviously as an ode to his wife, who is enjoying the game in a suite.

Earlier this season, Owens blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. After that play, Biles posted on X that she “almost had a heart attack.” It had been the second touchdown of Owens’ career.

Marjorie Taylor Greene lays out DOGE plan to investigate government spending

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., on Sunday said leaders of sanctuary states and cities should have to explain why they deserve federal dollars to a new congressional subcommittee bent on cutting government waste.

Greene, who was tapped to lead a subcommittee working with the Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), laid out how she hopes to cut government spending during an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

One area Greene said she wants the subcommittee to investigate is tied to the immigration crisis.

“I’d like to talk to the governors of sanctuary states and the mayors of sanctuary cities and have them come before our committee and explain why they deserve federal dollars if they’re going to harbor illegal criminal aliens in their states and their cities,” she said.

Greene specifically noted the death of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was brutally murdered while jogging on the University of Georgia campus in Athens in February. Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan illegal immigrant, was convicted in her murder. Ibarra had been granted a “humanitarian flight” from New York City to Atlanta in September 2023.

Greene also laid out a slew of other areas that could face the chopping block under the subcommittee’s plan to cut government spending.

“The way to do that is to cut programs, contracts, employees, grant programs, you name it, that are failing the American people and not serving the American people’s interests,” Greene said.

The congresswoman said government-funded media programs like NPR, which she claimed “spread nothing but Democrat propaganda,” will be under the subcommittee’s microscope.

She also said it will investigate active government contracts and programs to see if they still “make sense” or if “their purpose has expired.”

Greene mentioned government workers who have been working remotely since the COVID-19 pandemic – which forced many across the workforce, both in the government and private sectors, to work from home.

“We’re also looking at many – we have thousands – of buildings that the federal government owns and pays for with over $15 billion a year, but yet those government buildings stood empty and these government employees stay at home.”

Greene called these points “failures” in the government’s service to the American people.

“And we don’t care about people’s feelings,” Green said. “We’re going to be searching for the facts and we’re going to be verifying if this is worth spending the… American people’s hard-earned tax dollars on.”

Colorado now needs some help if they want a chance at the College Football Playoff.

The 16th-ranked Buffaloes controlled their own destiny in the bracket entering Saturday but fell to Kansas, 37-21, and now face an uphill climb.

It has been an impressive season for Colorado, which is 8-3 after winning four games last season and winning just one game the year prior.

But head coach Deion Sanders said his guys seemed to be getting a little too excited.

“We started smelling ourselves a little bit,” Sanders said after the game. “That’s what I just told our team. We got intoxicated with the success. We got intoxicated with the multitude of articles and the assumption that we’re this and the assumption that we’re that. And we did not play CU football. Therefore, we got our butts kicked.”

Well, Deion’s own son, quarterback Shedeur, didn’t necessarily agree with the sentiment.

I’m focused on plenty of other things than how somebody is thinking at all times.”

When asked how the Buffaloes could “sober up,” referencing his father’s comments, Shedeur replied, “I don’t know. No comment.”

Colorado now needs a win at home against Oklahoma State and some sort of combination of losses by Iowa State (home vs. Kansas State), Arizona State (at Arizona) and BYU (home vs. Houston) in order to play in the Big 12 title game, which is now their only avenue at making the College Football Playoff.

Videos of future first son Barron Trump speaking in a Slovenian accent as a young boy are spreading like wildfire on social media after his father’s massive electoral win earlier this month.

“I like my suitcase,” a 4-year-old Barron Trump said with an apparent Slovene accent in 2010 during a Larry King segment.

The video shows Barron Trump in his father’s office with both of his parents as he grabs a brown suitcase and asks his mom about going to school.

“I have to go to school now?” Barron Trump asks, again with an accent.

“You have lunch, and then you go to school,” Melania Trump responds.

“Now I’m gonna go,” Barron Trump asks again, speaking with the same accent as his mom.

“First you will have lunch, then you will go to school,” Melania tells her young son as he holds his brown briefcase.

Clips of the video have spread like wildfire across social media, most notably on TikTok, where users have filmed their own videos imitating Barron Trump, accompanied by the tag “sootcase,” as a play on how Barron Trump pronounced “suitcase.”

Social media users have reacted with shock over learning the eventual first son had a slight accent as a young boy, with many calling it “adorable,” “cute” and lauding Melania Trump for her close relationship with her young son. The videos had long floated on social media, but are only going viral after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election this month.

One user on TikTok said, “i can’t help but giggle every time i hear or see this video his Slovenian accent is so cuteness,” and another said, “he was adorable,” and another saying Melania Trump “seems like an amazingly sweet mom.”

Dozens of videos on TikTok have racked up hundreds of thousands of views each, and have even led to social media users creating song remixes of Barron Trump’s accent and social media commenters noting they never knew the first son had an accent as a young boy.

Melania Trump, who had a successful modeling career before she became first lady, was born in Novo Mesto, Yugoslavia – now Slovenia – and explained in the interview with Larry King in 2010 that her son has an accent because he spent the majority of time with his mom.

“He has an accent,” King noted in a live interview with Trump and his wife after footage of Barron speaking in an accent was aired.

“He spends most of the time with me,” Melania Trump responded, before King asked the eventual president, “what do you think of that?”

“I think it’s great,” Donald Trump responded. “Anything he does is OK with me.”

“He speaks three languages, actually,” Melania Trump added.

“Smart one,” Donald Trump said.

In another clip, Donald Trump is seen telling his son to avoid drugs, alcohol and tattoos when he grows up.

“I want all As,” Donald Trump said in the clip. “And when you get older, no drugs. No alcohol. No cigarettes. And, you know what else? No tattoos. I don’t ever want to see tattoos on you.”

Footage of Barron Trump in 2009 is also going viral, showing the roughly 3-year-old boy with his mom attending a charity event where Entertainment Tonight held a short interview with the pair. Barron Trump declared his love of playing the drums while again pronouncing his words similar to his mom’s Slovene accent.

“I like to play drums,” he said, adding he wants drums “like on the television” for his birthday.

Barron Trump is now 18-years-old and attends New York University. The first son overwhelmingly stays out of the public spotlight when compared to his older siblings, such as Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who frequently conduct media interviews and joined their father on the campaign trail.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Planet Earth is parting company with an asteroid that’s been tagging along as a “mini moon” for the past two months.

The harmless space rock will peel away on Monday, overcome by the stronger tug of the sun’s gravity. But it will zip closer for a quick visit in January.

NASA will use a radar antenna to observe the 33-foot (10-meter) asteroid then. That should deepen scientists’ understanding of the object known as 2024 PT5, quite possibly a boulder that was blasted off the moon by an impacting, crater-forming asteroid.

While not technically a moon — NASA stresses it was never captured by Earth’s gravity and fully in orbit — it’s “an interesting object” worthy of study.

The astrophysicist brothers who identified the asteroid’s “mini moon behavior,” Raul and Carlos de la Fuente Marcos of Complutense University of Madrid, have collaborated with telescopes in the Canary Islands for hundreds of observations so far.

Currently more than 2 million miles (3.5 million kilometers) away, the object is too small and faint to see without a powerful telescope. It will pass as close as 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers) of Earth in January, maintaining a safe distance before it zooms farther into the solar system while orbiting the sun, not to return until 2055. That’s almost five times farther than the moon.

First spotted in August, the asteroid began its semi jog around Earth in late September, after coming under the grips of Earth’s gravity and following a horseshoe-shaped path. By the time it returns next year, it will be moving too fast — more than double its speed from September — to hang around, said Raul de la Fuente Marcos.

NASA will track the asteroid for more than a week in January using the Goldstone solar system radar antenna in California’s Mojave Desert, part of the Deep Space Network.

Current data suggest that during its 2055 visit, the sun-circling asteroid will once again make a temporary and partial lap around Earth.
