Entire police department resigns leaving South Carolina community without law enforcement presence

0

A South Carolina community is without a police force after the entire department resigned, including the chief of police.

On Friday, McColl Mayor George Garner confirmed that the town no longer had any police officers and told WMBF News that the community is in a “difficult situation.”

“We’re actively working to hire a new police chief and more officers,” Mayor Garner said.

Garner said Police Chief Bob Hale put in his resignation first and the other officers then followed suit.

ENTIRE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESIGNS AFTER TOWN’S ‘FAILURE’ TO MEET LAW ENFORCEMENT NEEDS: FORMER CHIEF

In a public Facebook post, Hale stated his resignation was due to alleged repeated harassment and personal attacks and “hostile work environment” by an unnamed member of the city council.

“It is with a heavy heart that I do confirm my resignation as Chief of Police of the McColl Police Department along with all four of my fellow officers,” Hale wrote. “My personal decision to step away from the McColl Police Department can be attributed to repeated acts of harassment, personal attacks on my character, and the overall creation of a hostile work environment perpetuated by a specific Councilman.”

Hale added that the actions of the unnamed councilman made it impossible for the department to function effectively.

“For months, I have endured unwarranted and malicious behavior aimed at undermining my integrity and leadership,” Hale continued in the post. “These actions have not only affected me personally but have also created a toxic atmosphere that has hindered the department’s ability to function effectively. Despite our efforts to address these issues professionally and through appropriate channels, the harassment and hostility have persisted.”

In his statement, Hale also alleged that money was cut from the police department’s budget and that other critical police needs were not being fulfilled.

“I also can’t help but feel that these consistent negative acts were strategically used to inhibit the continued growth and success of the department. A significant amount of money was cut from our already depleted budget by the same Councilman upon his arrival to his elected position. Despite repeated appeals for funding to modernize equipment, enhance training, and increase staffing levels to meet the needs of our community, those critical needs went unmet. This lack of investment hampered our ability to operate at the standard the citizens of the Town of McColl rightfully expect and deserve. The safety of the residents and the well-being of the officers should have been prioritized by committing the necessary resources to build a department capable of addressing the complexities of 21st-century policing. Sadly, this was not the case and the majority of my tenure as Chief of Police was spent clearing the names of my officers as well as myself, from the numerous falsehoods that were made against us,” – Former McColl Police Chief Bob Hale

Hale said the decision to resign was not made lightly, and he deeply regrets the impact it may have on the community they have dedicated themselves to serving.

“I believe that stepping away is the only way to shed light on the severity of these issues and call for accountability and change. I remain hopeful that the Town of McColl will come together to address these challenges, prioritize ethical leadership, and create an environment where those in public service can perform their duties free from undue interference and hostility,” Hale wrote.

One McColl resident told WMBF now that the town is without a police department, he worries that residents could be at risk.

“Say if someone were stabbed or shot or whatever – without police enforcement, they would have to come from the sheriff’s office in Bennettsville,” said McColl resident, William Groom. “We’re talking ten or fifteen minutes and someone could possibly expire in that amount of time. Without police enforcement, it’s definitely a bad situation.”

Despite Hales’ statement, Garner told WMBF that Hale was not leaving the town on bad terms.

“I hate to see them go. They were a great group. But we gonna continue on,” Garner said.

Garner added that he has asked the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office and other nearby agencies to help cover the town in the meantime. He also enlisted the help of the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division for additional help.

The McColl Police Department is now accepting applications for Chief of Police and Garner said applications can be picked up at McColl Town hall.

Back in October, another community experienced a similar situation to the town of McColl.

The entire Geary Police Department in Oklahoma, including their chief of police, resigned citing political leaders for failing to meet the police department’s needs.

Titans stun Texans as battered Will Levis hangs in to help Tennessee win

0

A quarterback duel ensued between the Tennessee Titans’ Will Levis and the Houston Texans’ C.J. Stroud on Sunday in an AFC South clash, and the improbable occurred.

The Titans and Levis came away with the 32-27 win to move to 3-8 on the season.

The second-year quarterback threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine late in the first quarter to take a 10-7 lead. Then, on the first play of their drive with about 9:35 left in the game, Levis found Chig Okonkwo for a 70-yard touchdown pass.

Tennessee’s big play gave them a 30-27 lead. Later, Titans linebacker Harold Landry III put the icing on the cake with a safety on Stroud at the 1:13 mark.

Levis was 18-of-24 with 278 passing yards. He was sacked eight times, fumbled the ball away and threw an interception but still got the Titans the win.

Titans running back Tony Pollard ran for 119 yards on 24 carries. He scored a 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Calvin Ridley led the team with five catches for 93 yards.

Tennessee’s defense gave Stroud a headache. Linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. and defensive back Jarvin Brownlee Jr. each picked off Stroud.

Stroud finished with two touchdown passes. He was 20-of-33 with 247 yards. He started the game with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Cade Stover on their first drive. He then found Nico Collins for a five-yard touchdown pass.

But there was no offense from the Texans beyond that.

Houston cornerback Jimmie Ward took a Levis interception back 65 yards for a score in the third quarter. It gave the Texans a one-point lead. Kicker Ka’imi Fairbain added to it with a 54-yard field goal.

But the defense couldn’t make the play to stop Okonkwo from scoring. It proved to be the major difference-maker.

Alec Baldwin ‘Rust’ film director accepts why people may not see movie after cinematographer’s on-set death

0

Three years after the on-set shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, “Rust,” the Western flick starring Alec Baldwin, premiered at the Camerimage Festival in Poland without its star in attendance.

Director Joel Souza, who was also shot by the bullet fired out of Baldwin’s weapon during the incident at Bonanza Creek Ranch, admitted he understands why people may be hesitant to watch the film, but still hoped viewers would give the movie a chance.

After what legal experts described to Fox News Digital as a “comedy of legal errors” in Baldwin’s July criminal trial for Hutchins’ death, a New Mexico judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter case against the “30 Rock” actor. He was facing up to 18 months in prison.

Despite the deadly incident on Oct. 21, 2021, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, “Rust” was completed with Baldwin as the lead character.

“If people don’t want to watch this movie, for any reason, they certainly don’t need to and there’s no hard feelings from me,” Souza told The Hollywood Reporter. “But what I hope is that people give it a chance — and if they do, that they look closely at the visual aspects, particularly the cinematography.”

ALEC BALDWIN’S ‘RUST’ DIRECTOR ‘RUINED’ BY FATAL SHOOTING: ‘THE PERSON I WAS JUST WENT AWAY

He added, “It’s a very unique opportunity to look through Halyna’s eyes and see how she saw the world. How much she is missed is evidenced by the fact that so many people came back to finish this film for her. They came back and stepped into a very difficult and loaded situation because they were touched by her, and it was important to them to finish this for her.”

Hutchins’ family boycotted the Wednesday premiere of “Rust” due to Baldwin’s reluctance to apologize for the fatal on-set shooting. The premiere was dedicated to Hutchins, with organizers holding a moment of silence in her memory.

“It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work come alive on screen,” Olga Solovey, Hutchins’ mother, said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital. “Unfortunately, that was ripped away from me when Alec Baldwin discharged his gun and killed my daughter.”

She added, “Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death. Instead, he seeks to unjustly profit from his killing of my daughter. That is the reason why I refuse to attend the festival for the promotion of ‘Rust,’ especially now when there is still no justice for my daughter.”

Souza introduced the film, and explained why he completed the project after initially wanting to scrap the film following Hutchins’ death. “It just hurt too much,” he said, before admitting that Hutchins’ husband Matthew encouraged him to see the production through fruition.

“It was important to him that the people who knew and loved Halyna get to see her final work,” Souza said. The mission became “to preserve every single frame that I could of hers, and to honor her final work.”

Baldwin still faces a civil lawsuit brought against him by Hutchins’ family. The actor’s legal team filed a motion to have the lawsuit paused on Nov. 19, just a day before the “Rust” premiere in Poland.

Attorney Gloria Allred filed a lawsuit alleging battery, loss of consortium, infliction of emotional distress and more on behalf of Hutchins’ mother, sister and father in February 2023. The lawsuit claimed Hutchins was financially responsible for her family and had plans to bring them with her to live in America.

The lawsuit named Baldwin, producers of “Rust” and other defendants the lawyer argued are responsible for the death of Hutchins.

Cowboys score 24 points in 4th quarter for narrow victory over Commanders in bizarre game

0

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders, 34-26, on Sunday in their Week 12 NFC East battle. And that’s probably the easiest way to describe what occurred in the game

The score was 3-3 at halftime and Dallas took a 10-9 lead with 4:40 left in the third quarter when Cooper Rush found Jalen Tolbert for a 6-yard touchdown. It seemed like it was going to be a defensive battle with no real scoring going on for either team.

Then, the fourth quarter happened.

The Cowboys took a 20-9 lead over the Commanders after Rush found tight end Luke Schoonmaker for a 22-yard touchdown. It seemed like it was enough for the Cowboys to close out the game as there was only 5:16 left.

Jayden Daniels sparked a roaring comeback. He found Zach Ertz for a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to three.

Dallas struck back with a special teams play. Austin Seibert kicked the ball down the field. Returner KaVontae Turpin fumbled the ball initially, picked it up, made a spin move and then was gone. He galloped 99 yards for the score and the Cowboys had a 10-point lead.

The Commanders drove down the field in six plays to set up Seibert for a 51-yard field goal. Dallas went three-and-out on its next possession. But inexplicably made a bad mistake on defense.

Daniels found wide receiver Terry McLaurin and the veteran found space around Cowboys defenders and took the ball into the end zone. One play, 86 yards. Washington could have tied the game but Seibert missed the point-after attempt. The Commanders were down 27-26.

Seibert tried the onside kick to recover it, but the ball bounced to Dallas player Juanyeh Thomas, who for some reason returned the ball 43 yards for a touchdown. It gave the Commanders one final drive. It would have been an even bigger calamity if Daniels found similar magic as he did against the Chicago Bears.

Luckily, for the Cowboys, Daniels’ Hail Mary attempt was batted down and the Cowboys picked up the win.

The two teams combined for 31 points in the fourth quarter.

Rush was solid enough to get the win for the Cowboys. He was 24-of-32 with 247 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Schoonmaker had three catches for 55 yards. Tolbert had two catches for 22 yards.

CeeDee Lamb led Dallas with 10 catches for 67 yards.

The Commanders had three turnovers. Daniels had two interceptions – one to Chauncey Golston and the other to Israel Mukuamu. Commanders tight end John Bates also fumbled.

The rookie quarterback was 25-of-38 with 275 yards and two touchdown passes. He also led the team with 74 rushing yards and had a rushing touchdown.

American judge rules ‘cursed’ 840-pound emerald may return to Brazil

0

A massive emerald that was smuggled into the United States over two decades ago will soon be back on its way to its homeland, according to a recent ruling made by a U.S. judge.

The gem, which weighs more than 840 pounds, is known as the Bahia Emerald, having been mined in Bahia, Brazil in 2001. The emerald has been called “cursed” due to the lengthy legal proceedings surrounding it.

After being stolen in 2001, several actors claimed to possess ownership of the gem, prompting countless court cases over the past two decades. The Department of Justice (DOJ) requested a restraining order to protect the gem, which was in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, in 2015. The Brazilian government has sought custody since.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton ruled that the gem must be returned to Brazil. In a court document obtained by Fox News Digital, Walton wrote that those arguing against the Brazilian government had “insufficient [evidence] to prohibit the return of the Emerald to Brazil.”

“Upon careful consideration of the parties’ submissions, the Court concludes for the following reasons that it must vacate the stay [for the gem to remain in the U.S.] currently imposed in this case and grant the government’s application,” Walton ruled.

In a statement, the white-shoe law firm Mayer Brown called the decision a “victory” and explained its efforts in bringing the gem home.

“After the Brazilians who participated in the Emerald’s illegal export exhausted their appellate rights, Mayer Brown worked with Brazil to develop a request under the mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT) between the United States and Brazil to enforce the Brazilian forfeiture order,” the firm explained.

“In April 2022, the DOJ filed a motion with the US District Court for the District of Columbia under the MLAT, asking the court to order the Emerald’s forfeiture.”

“This week, in a major win for the country of Brazil, Judge Walton of the US District Court for the District of Columbia issued a final ruling on the DOJ’s motion to forfeit the gem to Brazil—ending the lengthy court battle and setting the stage for the Bahia Emerald to be repatriated back to Brazil,” the firm concluded.

Chiefs squander late double-digit lead, but survive in walk-off fashion against Panthers

0

Sunday should have been easy for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was anything but.

In fact, they were in danger of a serious upset. Yet, because they are the Chiefs, they survived.

After squandering a double-digit lead late, the Chiefs walked it off against the Carolina Panthers for a 30-27 victory.

Kansas City had a 20-9 lead at halftime, and still led by 11 at the start of the fourth quarter. But the Panthers chipped away and played stout defense.

With less than two minutes to go, Chuba Hubbard scored a touchdown to cut their deficit to two, and after the Chiefs committed a defensive pass interference on the two-point conversion, Hubard took another handoff into the end zone to tie the game with 1:46 to go.

But as we’ve learned plenty of times, you never want to give the Chiefs any time. They quickly got into field goal range, as Patrick Mahomes scrambled for 34 yards. Several plays later, Spencer Shrader drilled the 31-yard field goal as time expired.

The Chiefs may have improved to 10-1, but they are certainly lucky to be in this spot. Just two weeks ago, they blocked a potential game-winning field goal against the Denver Broncos.

They have not played sharp, again, but the reigning back-to-back champions keep on getting the job done.

Mahomes went 27-for-37 with three touchdowns – DeAndre Hopkins caught the third.

After two years of performances, Adele is saying farewell to her Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

The “Hello” singer thanked her fans and her loved ones, including son Angelo and fiancée Rich Paul, becoming emotional on stage during her last show on Saturday night.

“To my son, I chose to do a residency maybe because I f–king hate touring,” Adele said through tears and a little laughter in a video captured by a fan and shared on X.

Once the shows began, Adele extended her dates into 2023 and again through most of 2024. Her last shows are set to run from Oct. 25 through November 23 this year.

Blinken questioned for State Department hosting in-house therapy sessions

0

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., took aim at Secretary of State Antony Blinken after it was reported that the State Department held therapy sessions for employees who were upset by President-elect Trump’s election victory.

“I am concerned that the Department is catering to federal employees who are personally devastated by the normal functioning of American democracy through the provision of government-funded mental health counseling because Kamala Harris was not elected President of the United States,” Issa said in a letter to Blinken last week.

The letter comes after a Free Beacon report earlier this month that detailed two alleged therapy sessions that were held at the State Department after Trump’s victory, with sources telling the outlet that one such instance amounted to an information “cry session.”

In another instance, an email went out to agency employees and touted a separate  “insightful webinar where we delve into effective stress management techniques to help you navigate these challenging times” after Trump’s victory, according to the report.

“Change is a constant in our lives, but it can often bring about stress and uncertainty,” the email said. “Join us for an insightful webinar where we delve into effective stress management techniques to help you navigate these challenging times. This session will provide tips and practical strategies for managing stress and maintaining your well being.”

In his letter to Blinken, Issa argued that the reported sessions were “disturbing” and that “nonpartisan government officials” should not be suffering a “personal meltdown over the result of a free and fair election.”

MATT GAETZ SAYS HE WILL NOT SERVE IN THE UPCOMING SESSION OF CONGRESS

While the Republican lawmaker acknowledged that the mental health of the agency’s employees was important, he questioned the use of taxpayer dollars to counsel those upset about the election, demanding answers on how many sessions have been conducted, how many more are planned, and how much the sessions are costing the department.

Issa also raised fears that the sessions could also call into question the willingness of some of the State Department’s employees to carry out Trump’s new vision for the agency.

“The mere fact that the Department is hosting these sessions raises significant questions about the willingness of its personnel to implement the lawful policy priorities that the American people elected President Trump to pursue and implement,” the letter said. “The Trump Administration has a mandate for wholesale change in the foreign policy arena, and if foreign service officers cannot follow through on the American people’s preferences, they should resign and seek a political appointment in the next Democrat administration.”

The State Department did not immediately respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment.
