Dislike turkey on Thanksgiving? You’re not alone, new survey says

0

A new survey shows that nearly 35% of Americans consider turkey to be their least favorite food on Thanksgiving.

The survey, conducted by vacation website The Vacationer, polled 1,042 American adults, asking which traditional Thanksgiving foods they dislike.

Turkey ranked at the top of the list, followed by stuffing/dressing (about 32%) and ham (nearly 32%).

Karen Read won’t get new trial in Boston cop boyfriend’s death, expert says

0

It was a cold killing.

Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe died from blunt force trauma to the head and hypothermia during a January snowstorm in Canton, Massachusetts, about 15 miles outside the city proper.

Karen Read, the former finance professional and O’Keefe’s girlfriend at the time, was accused of fatally running him over in a drunken fight and fleeing the scene.

But her trial, once viewed as a “slam dunk” case for the prosecution, ended with a hung jury in July after she claimed the case was an elaborate cover-up and that she had nothing to do with whoever left him out in the cold to die.

KAREN READ CLAIMS MURDER CHARGE IN POLICE OFFICER BOYFRIEND’S DEATH IS DOUBLE JEOPARDY

A judge has already cleared the way for a second trial, scheduled for Jan. 27, but both sides have asked the court to push it back to April 1, a spokesman for the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office told Fox News Digital. The judge has not yet decided on that matter, and the state Supreme Court is weighing whether two of the charges should be dismissed if the case does go back to trial – including the top charge of second-degree murder.

If the case does get a new trial as expected in January, it will be led by a special assistant prosecutor, Hank Brennan, who once represented the mobster James “Whitey” Bulger and has already begun trying to obtain unpublished records from Massachusetts reporters who have interviewed Read.

The plans could change again due to a number of risks that would crop up in a new trial, according to criminal defense attorney David Gelman, who has been following the case.

“You already had all these police testify,” Gelman said. “They are now gonna be put in a very unwelcome position. They’re gonna have to testify again, and if they say anything differently, then they’re gonna perjure themselves. I wouldn’t want to be in that position.”

Read, in a recent round of interviews, argues that she was framed by the real killers, whom she believes are other members of law enforcement O’Keefe got into a fight with after she dropped him off at the home of fellow Boston Police Officer Brian Albert.

O’KEEFE FAMILY FILES WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT AGAINST KAREN READ FOR ‘RECKLESS CONDUCT’

Prosecutors, however, charged her with hitting her boyfriend with her SUV after a drunken fight and leaving him to die in a snowstorm.

His remains were discovered on Albert’s front lawn.

According to Read, when she woke up at 6 a.m. after a night of drinking, she realized O’Keefe wasn’t home and went out to look for him.

Autopsy photos also show what appear to be wounds from an animal on O’Keefe’s right arm, which the defense argued were a suspicious detail in what prosecutors alleged was a vehicular homicide.

Potentially more damning to the case was testimony from Massachusetts State Trooper Michael Proctor.

Jurors were seen shaking their heads in court as Read’s defense team read some of his text messages.

In them, he called Read a “wack job,” a “babe … with no a–” and a “c—.”

He wrote that he wished she would kill herself and joked about looking for nude selfies while searching her phone.

His cross-examination already turned off one jury, Gelman said. A second go could do the same thing, and if Proctor changes his story at all, the defense will likely pounce.

“I cannot possibly think that they are going to put officers on the stand who have already screwed this trial up,” he argued. “They are biased because, obviously, it’s one of theirs who died. I can understand, potentially, that they may have some type of a bias in this.”

But that’s not an excuse for botching an investigation with questionable ethics, he said.

“They’re paid to do this job, and they have to do it the correct way,” he said. “But they went about this very unprofessionally.”

Gelman predicts that the most likely outcome is Read agrees to a plea deal. Otherwise, the case gets dismissed. And if it’s dismissed with prejudice, that would be the end of it.

Brennan, for his part, appears ready to do what he’s been brought in to do.

“I assume full responsibility and all obligations for prosecuting this case and will do so meticulously, ethically and zealously, without compromise,” he told The Associated Press after being named special prosecutor.

“I have two core obligations. The first is to make certain that Karen Read receives a fair trial… The second is to ensure that the facts surrounding John O’Keefe’s death are fully fairly aired in the courtroom without outside influence.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Size of slim Republican House majority hangs on 3 uncalled races

0

Republicans hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives, though the size of that narrow margin will not be known until the final three undecided races are called.

This week, The Associated Press called Ohio’s 9th Congressional District for Democratic incumbent Rep. Marcy Kaptur, and Alaska’s at-large district for Republican entrepreneur Nick Begich, who flipped the seat red by ousting Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary Sattler Peltola.

The three House races that remain uncalled as of Thursday are in California and Iowa.

The balance of power currently sits at 219 seats for Republicans, and 213 for the Democrats.

1. California’s 13th Congressional District

Republican Rep. John Duarte is leading former Democratic state assembly member Adam Gray in California’s 13th Congressional District, but the highly contested race remains uncalled as of Thursday morning.

Roughly 96% of the vote has been counted, and Duarte holds a slim 50.1% to 49.9% lead. The two candidates are separated by just 351 votes at 101,217 to 100,866.

2. California’s 45th Congressional District

Democratic challenger Derek Tran is holding his lead over Republican incumbent Rep. Michelle Steel in the 45th District. Steel had been in the lead by a few hundred votes late last week, but Tran is now up 480 votes with a total of 156,576 to Steel’s 156,096 votes as of Friday morning.

More than 97% of the votes have been counted for the district.

DEMOCRATS PRIVATELY GRIPE ABOUT PELOSI’S ‘DAMAGING’ POST-ELECTION COMMENTS: ‘SHE NEEDS TO TAKE A SEAT’

3. Iowa’s 1st Congressional District

Republican incumbent Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks holds a less than 1% lead over challenger Christina Bohannan with 99% of the votes counted. Miller-Meeks’ lead sits at just over 800 votes as of Friday.

A recount, which Miller-Meeks has labeled a waste of taxpayer money, is underway, and House Administration Committee election observers have been deployed to the state to observe the process.

Bohannan has requested a recount in her bid to unseat Miller-Meeks. The Associated Press has not yet called the race because the margin was close enough that it could prompt a recount.

Miller-Meeks has declared victory and said she was confident in her lead.

Dolphins’ Zach Sieler performs Trump dance after big play vs Patriots

0

Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Zach Sieler is the latest NFL player to perform President-elect Donald Trump’s famous dance move after he made a big play against the New England Patriots.

Sieler helped thwart a Patriots drive in the third quarter with the team already up big. He did the celebration with teammates Calais Campbell and Emmanuel Ogbah looking on.

Miami won the game 34-15 to improve to 5-6 on the season and with their playoff hopes still intact. Sieler had four tackles in the game, including two sacks and one tackle for a loss.

Even Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was impressed with the defensive tackle.

“Up early thinking about how good Zach sieler is,” Hill wrote on X early Monday.

Sieler is the latest NFL player to perform the Trump dance move. He followed Calvin Ridley, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Brock Bowers and Nick Bosa to do it in the NFL.

UFC star Jon Jones, soccer star Christian Pulisic and LPGA Tour star Charley Hull have also done the move as well.

EAGLES’ SAQUON BARKLEY SETS FRANCHISE SINGLE-GAME RUSHING RECORD IN STATEMENT WIN OVER RAMS

The NFL confirmed to Fox News Digital last week that the league had “no issue” with it, and players would not be fined for doing the celebration.

Former soccer goalkeeper Tim Howard slammed Pulisic for doing the Trump dance and for “glorifying” him. However, Howard has been one of the few criticizing athletes, in any sport, for doing the Trump dance.

NFL great Brian Urlacher shared on “Jesse Watters Primetime” why he thought players were doing the dance now.

“People were scared for a while. You don’t want people to talk bad about you, how we’ve been talked about the last four years if you’re a Donald Trump supporter,” Urlacher said.

Paige Spiranac comes to defense of Sabrina Carpenter for embracing her sexuality

0

Golf influencer Paige Spiranac came to the defense of pop star Sabrina Carpenter after the singer came under fire on social media over her sexuality while keeping a mostly female audience.

Carpenter has made viral moments over the course of the year for doing sexual poses during her performance of the song “Juno” while on tour. One user on X pointed out how Carpenter is able to keep her base while wearing essentially lingerie during her sets.

Spiranac, who has also faced backlash for her attire while on the golf course, defended Carpenter.

“I dislike how women pick and choose when it’s okay to support other women for embracing their sexuality depending on if it appears to be for the female or male gaze,” Spiranac wrote in a post on X. “Women should be able to embrace their sexuality if that’s what makes them feel empowered.

“One shouldn’t be called a genius while the other is called an attention whore for doing the same exact thing.”

Spiranac added that the problem was not about her.

“This isn’t really even about me. It’s a constant theme I keep seeing with other women too,” she added.

The golfer has routinely fired back at negative comments about her appearance.

Spiranac explained her attire choices in an interview with Sports Illustrated last year.

“I was a gymnast before I switched into golf,” the former All-Mountain West Conference golfer said. “I was so comfortable wearing spandex and very little of it because that’s just what you wear when you’re wearing a leotard, and you’re competing. When I switched into golf, we were struggling a little bit financially, and so I didn’t have the luxury to go out and buy a whole new golf-appropriate wardrobe. And so, I wore what was in my closet, which was workout clothes. That’s just how I learned to play the game.”

Spiranac said she considers golfers athletes and wondered “why don’t we dress like athletes?”

She remarked about Lucas Glover sweating through his clothes during a PGA Tour event as why golfers should be able to wear what they are comfortable with. LIV golfers, for instance, are allowed to wear shorts during their competitions.

“That was always my mindset when I got into golf, and it really rubs people the wrong way, which is shocking,” she said. “They’ll have really intense discussions over if they should wear shorts or pants or a blade collar or a real collar, and I’m just out here just in tank tops or spandex and people are like ‘What are you doing?’ But I love it.

Uruguay election: Leftist opposition candidate Orsi wins with 90 percent turnout

0

Uruguay ousted its conservative government that had been in charge for the past five years, as leftist opposition candidate Yamandú Orsi claimed victory in a tight presidential runoff Sunday.

Even as the vote count continued, Álvaro Delgado, the presidential candidate of the center-right ruling coalition, conceded defeat to his challenger.

“With sadness, but without guilt, we can congratulate the winner,” he told supporters at his campaign headquarters in the capital of Montevideo.

Orsi, 57, a working-class former history teacher and two-time mayor from Uruguay’s Broad Front coalition, was mentored by former President José “Pepe” Mujica, an ex-Marxist guerilla who became world renowned for driving Uruguay’s legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage and sale of marijuana a decade ago. Orsi thanked his supporters as crowds flocked to greet him.

“The country of liberty, equality and fraternity has triumphed once again,” he said, vowing to unite the nation of 3.4 million people after such a tight vote.

“Let’s understand that there is another part of our country who have different feelings today,” he said. “These people will also have to help build a better country. We need them too.”

“I will be the president who calls for national dialogue again and again, who builds a more integrated society and country,” Orsi said.

“Starting tomorrow, I’ll have to work very hard, there’s a lot to do,” he told the Associated Press from the glass-walled NH Columbia hotel, thronged friends and colleagues embracing and congratulating him.

With nearly all the votes counted, electoral officials reported that Orsi won just over 49% of the vote, ahead of Delgado’s 46%. The rest cast blank votes or abstained in defiance of Uruguay’s enforced compulsory voting. Turnout reached almost 90%.

After weeks in which the rivals appeared tied in the polls, Delgado’s concession ushers in Orsi as Uruguay’s new leader and cuts short the center-right Republican coalition’s shot at governing.

The 2019 election of President Luis Lacalle Pou spelled an end to 15 consecutive years of rule by the Broad Front.

“I called Yamandú Orsi to congratulate him as President-elect of our country,” Lacalle Pou wrote on social media platform X, adding that he would “put myself at his service and begin the transition as soon as I deem it appropriate.”

Orsi’s victory made the South American country the latest to rebuke the incumbent party in the wake of post-pandemic economic malaise.

The win contrasts with that of populist Javier Milei, who won the presidency in Argentina in 2023 by promising to overhaul the establishment to deal with soaring inflation and poverty. Milei reportedly has grown close to President-elect Trump.

Orsi has been described as a moderate with no radical plans for change. He largely agrees with his opponent on key voter concerns like driving down the childhood poverty rate, now at a staggering 25%, and containing an upsurge in organized crime that has shaken the nation long considered among Latin America’s safest.

ARGENTINA’S MILEI BLASTS UN OVER SUPPORT FOR COVID LOCKDOWNS, APPEASING ‘BLOODY DICTATORSHIPS’

Despite Orsi’s promise to lead a “new left” in Uruguay, his platform resembles the mix of market-friendly policies and welfare programs that characterized the Broad Front’s tenure from 2005-2020.

Mujica, now 89 and recovering from esophageal cancer, turned up at his local polling station before balloting even began on Sunday to praise Orsi’s humility and Uruguay’s proud stability.

“This is no small feat,” he said of his nation’s “citizenry that respects formal institutions.”

With inflation easing, and the economy expected to expand by some 3.2% this year, Delgado had promised to continue pursuing his predecessor’s pro-business policies.

Lacalle Pou, who constitutionally cannot run for a second consecutive term, has enjoyed high approval ratings. But the official results trickling in on Sunday showed that mounting complaints in Uruguay about years of sluggish economic growth, stagnant wages and the government’s struggle to contain crime after five years helped swing the election against Delgado.

Specific proposals by Orsi include tax incentives to lure investment and revitalize the critical agricultural sector, as well as social security reforms that would lower the retirement age but fall short of a radical overhaul sought by Uruguay’s unions that failed to pass in the Oct. 27 general election during which neither front-runner secured an outright majority.

Jordanian men accused of breaching Quantico gate have cases dismissed

0

Two Jordanian men who were charged with unlawfully entering Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia in May have had their cases dismissed, according to a report.

U.S. Magistrate Judge William Porter threw out the misdemeanor charges against Hasan Hamdan and Mohammad Dabous on Oct. 3, the same day that U.S. attorneys for the Eastern District of Virginia filed a motion to dismiss the charges against the men, Military.com reported.

It was unclear why the federal judge dismissed the cases “without prejudice,” though court documents obtained by the outlet stated, “the ends of justice are best served by this dismissal.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

The attempted breach happened on May 3. A spokesperson for the base said two people in a box truck were stopped at a gate, with the driver allegedly telling military police officers they were making a delivery to the post office and worked for a company subcontracted by Amazon.

An Amazon spokesperson told Fox News at the time it does not appear the individuals were delivering on behalf of the company and that the company was looking into the matter.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sources told Fox News in May that one of the Jordanian men crossed into the U.S. illegally in April before being released. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told Fox News the other man was a foreign student whose status was terminated in January.

DHS sources also told Fox News that neither man has a criminal history in the U.S., and the FBI would not say if the suspects were on a terrorist watchlist.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said at the time that he wrote a letter to President Biden, telling him, “the attempted breach at Quantico, and the federal government’s silence on the immigration status of the individuals involved, reiterates the gravity of your failure to secure the southern border, and to provide state governments notice of illegal migrant relocations so I can protest the safety of all Virginians.”

Chicago Public Schools suffering from ‘chronic absenteeism’ by teachers as union demands higher pay: report

0

The Chicago Public School system is suffering from “chronic absenteeism” among teachers who’ve skipped more than 10 days of the 2023-2024 school year, according to a new report.

State records show that over 41% of CPS teachers exceeded 10 days of absence last year, the Chicago Tribune reported. These absences are in addition to the built-in vacation time allotted to teachers for the school year, which includes ten days for winter break, five for spring break and eight additional days off for holidays, according to the outlet.

CHICAGO DEMOCRAT SOUNDS ALARM AS 55 SCHOOLS REPORT NO PROFICIENCY IN MATH OR READING: ‘VERY SERIOUS’

“Those 10 days represent a statistical benchmark the profession uses to monitor ‘chronic absenteeism’ among teachers,” the Tribune wrote.

The report comes amid ongoing contract negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union, who are demanding a 9% annual raise for teachers. The median salary for CPS teachers is close to $95,000, according to the outlet.

The teachers’ union is calling for an extra $50 billion in funding to cover wage hikes as well as other demands. For instance, the money would be used to provide fully paid abortions for its members, new migrant services and facilities and a host of LGBTQ-related requirements and training in schools.

The massive demands are being made despite its members delivering underwhelming results for its students. Only 21% of the city’s eighth-graders are proficient readers, according to the Nation’s Report Card, which provides national results about students’ performance.

CPS Chief Labor Relations Officer Miguel Perretta said the district cannot afford the raises demanded by the union and does not intend to concede, ABC7 reported.

STUDENTS LEFT BEHIND AS CHICAGO HIGH SCHOOL SUFFERS FROM STAFFING ISSUES, TEACHER ABSENCES: REPORT

In September, students at a Chicago high school were left without a teacher for several weeks due to chronic absenteeism by educators, the Chicago Block Club revealed at the time.

“About 46 percent of the teaching staff had more than 10 absences in 2023, according to CPS data. That means nearly half of Clemente teachers missed the equivalent of at least two weeks of school,” the outlet reported.

In June, Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates told a news radio host that conservatives do not want Black children to read, adding that it is “part of the oath they take to be right wing.”

Gates seemingly doubled down on the comments following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, demanding in a letter to Mayor Brandon Johnson that the teaching of Black history be included in the teachers’ contract, ABC7 reported.

“We are worried that, in the age of Trump, teaching Black history could be a problem in the city of Chicago because of the restrictions that the federal government may place on curriculum,” Gates wrote.

The Chicago Tribune called the salary request “outlandish” in an editorial on Sunday.

“So it’s fair to ask as CTU continues to make outrageous demands of city and state taxpayers, what exactly are Chicagoans getting for the $30,000-per-student they are currently paying, the highest per-student investment in Illinois? Why is it that all we hear from CTU is demands for more, but we never hear anything from the union about what its members owe the taxpayers (and parents) of this city?” the board wrote.

CPS did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
