New York plane crash at Bills star’s property leaves 1 dead, police say

0

A plane crash on property owned by Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins Thursday left one person dead, officials in New York said.

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport issued an alert at around 11:16 a.m. ET that the aircraft had mechanical issues as it tried to get to White Plains, East Aurora Police Chief Patrick Welch said. The plane originated from Lansing, Michigan.

Around six minutes later, East Aurora dispatch received a phone call about a small plane crash in a wooded area, he added.

The plane crashed between two properties and in “close proximity” to Dawkins’ house, Welch said. WKBW-TV reported it was Dawkins’ property, citing property records.

The offensive lineman was excused from practice for personal reasons.

Welch said fire officials responding to the crash reported a “fully involved fire” upon arriving.

The pilot, who was the only person on board the 1979 Beechcraft A36, died, officials said, but was not immediately identified.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it would investigate the crash.

Dawkins, a three-time Pro Bowler, talked about the crash when he returned to practice.

“I still wonder why things happen in life, but tragedies happen all of the time. The biggest point about it is that I hope the pilot’s family is OK. I hope that they’re doing all right because somebody lost their life today for an accident,” he said, via Syracuse.com. “I’m glad my family is perfectly fine.”

‘Cascade of harm’: Cuomo threatens defamation lawsuit against former aide who accused him of sexual harassment

0

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday submitted a notice that he would be filing a defamation lawsuit against a former aide, who previously filed a federal lawsuit against him for sexual harassment, claiming that she defamed him through the process.

“The nature of this action is to recover compensatory and punitive damages for the serious injuries and losses that Governor Cuomo has suffered and will continue to suffer as a result of the December 9, 2024 false statement by Bennett and her agents that Governor Cuomo ‘sexually harassed’ Bennett,” a legal notice filed by Cuomo against Charlotte Bennett on Thursday reads.

“Bennett’s agents tweeted this statement on December 9, 2024 with the headline: “Debra Katz and Charlotte Bennett issued statements on news that Bennett voluntarily dismissed her lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in the SDNY against Andrew Cuomo, who sexually harassed her.” Bennett reposted her agents’ tweet, which has garnered more than 90,000 views. The December 9 Defamatory Statement – which was intended to be and was widely disseminated and which was made in the wake of Bennett and her agents’ numerous prior public accusations against Governor Cuomo – was false and defamatory, and Bennett made it knowing full well that it was false and intending to cause harm to Governor Cuomo.”

Bennett was one of several women to accuse Cuomo of sexual harassment, which ultimately contributed to his resignation in 2021.

“I would never want to be unhelpful in any way, and I think given the circumstances, the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to governing, and therefore, that’s what I’ll do,” Cuomo said at the time while denying the allegations against him and arguing that state investigators from the office of Attorney General Letitia James were biased against him.

“I have slipped and called people ‘honey, ’sweetheart’ and ‘darling.’ I mean it to be endearing, but women found it dated and offensive,” Cuomo said at the time. “I take full responsibility for my actions. I have been too familiar with people. My sense of humor can be insensitive and off-putting.”

“In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn,” he added. “There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate. And I should have, no excuses.”

Bennett dropped her lawsuit against Cuomo, which she filed in 2022, this December on the eve of her deposition in the case.

FORMER NY GOV. ANDREW CUOMO REFERRED TO DOJ FOR PROSECUTION BY HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE: REPORT

“Since Ms. Bennett filed suit in federal court in September 2022, former Governor Cuomo has used every opportunity to harass our client with an astonishing number of invasive discovery requests and outrageous statements in pleadings to embarrass and humiliate her,” Bennett’s lawyer, Debra Katz, said in a statement as the lawsuit was dropped on Dec. 9. “These include requests for medical records for unrelated specialists, including gynecologists, optometrists, and others, as well as medical records dating back more than ten years ago from when she was a minor.”

“This fishing expedition was designed to dig up material to smear our client and distract from the fact that Mr. Cuomo did, as the New York Attorney General’s Office concluded after a lengthy investigation, sexually harass Ms. Bennett and at least 11 other women.  It is also important not to lose sight of the fact that before engaging in his multi-year, multi-million dollar legal war against Ms. Bennett – funded by N.Y. State taxpayers – Mr. Cuomo apologized for his behavior.  At a March 2021 press conference, he apologized for ‘making anyone feel uncomfortable’ and for ‘whatever pain I caused anyone,’ and said, ‘I acknowledge some of the things I have said have been misinterpreted as an unwanted flirtation. To the extent anyone felt that way, I am truly sorry about that.’ His apologies were empty.”

Richard Azzopardi, a rep for Cuomo, praised Bennett’s decision to drop the case at the time, saying that her claims “falsely smeared” the former governor “for years.”

“Ms. Bennett’s decision to drop her baseless lawsuit should be viewed as a complete capitulation and a desperate attempt to avoid being confronted with the mountains of exculpatory discovery – including contemporaneous texts and videos that the AG’s office never obtained – that completely refute her claims against Governor Cuomo,” he said, in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“After falsely smearing Governor Cuomo for years, Ms. Bennett suddenly withdrew her federal lawsuit on the eve of her deposition to avoid having to admit under oath that her allegations were false, and her claims had no merit,” he said. “If New York State does give in to her public pressure campaign and settles, it will not be on the merits and should require the public release of all the evidence so that New Yorkers finally know the truth: Governor Cuomo never sexually harassed anyone.”

Katz pushed back against Cuomo’s notice of claim in a statement to the Times Union, saying it has “no merit.”

“There is a long history of using defamation lawsuits to silence and punish accusers of sexual harassment,” Katz said. “It is shameful that Mr. Cuomo has apparently now chosen to go down that path.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Katz for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Cuomo’s notice alleges that Bennett “cynically used” conversations with Cuomo to “advance” her career and that her “false allegations materially contributed to a cascade of harm to Governor Cuomo.”

Massachusetts cat rescued after being seen on floating ice on a lake

A 20-year-old blind black-and-white cat was rescued from an icy Massachusetts pond this week, in what authorities called “nothing short of a miracle.”

Tiki, who likes to roam around the outdoors, was seen Monday on a floating piece of ice before falling in the Nabnasset Lake in Westford.

The feline was saved when a passerby and a couple of nearby construction workers rose to the occasion.

“The crackling happened, and I was like, hysterical,” passerby Dawn Felicani recalled Thursday to The Associated Press. “And all of a sudden, it fell in! Its little head was sticking out! I’m in tears, and I’m freaking out.”

Felicani called first responders and a local animal control officer. Two construction workers at a nearby home, identified by Westford Animal Control as Kris and Nate, got into a rowboat to respond.

“Nate hopped into a nearby rowboat and Kris pushed the boat out as far as he could, helping Nate navigate from shore,” an animal control news release said. “Nate was able to utilize a shovel as he moved, breaking through the ice.”

“He quickly accessed the cat and plucked him from the water moments before he surely would have succumbed to the frigid cold,” the agency added. “The cat was taken indoors, toweled off and wrapped up in blankets.”

Tiki, who was in shock and was taken for veterinary care, where he was shivering and lethargic, authorities said. His temperature was so low that it didn’t even register on the thermometer.

Tiki’s owner, John Arden, told authorities he may have gotten out the night earlier in the early-morning hours.

“We believe that Tiki may have been chased onto the ice by a predator last night and found himself stuck on the ice floating straight across the lake through the night,” animal control said.

DOJ seeks to block Jan 6 defendants from attending Trump inauguration

0

Attorneys at the Department of Justice are urging federal judges to reject petitions from at least two Jan. 6 defendants who are asking that they be allowed to return to the nation’s capital for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Cindy Young, convicted of four misdemeanors for her involvement in the riot at the Capitol, and Russell Taylor, who pleaded guilty to a felony conspiracy charge, both petitioned the courts to allow them to return to Washington, D.C., despite provisions of their sentences requiring them to stay away.

“Contrary to Young’s self designation that she ‘poses no threat of danger to the community,’ Young presents a danger to the D.C. community, including the very law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol on January 6, 2021,” U.S. attorneys said in response to Young’s petition. The federal attorneys cited calls from Young “for retribution against those involved in January 6 prosecutions” and argued that she has failed “to recognize the seriousness of her actions.”

A request from Taylor, who was invited to attend the inauguration by members of Utah’s congressional delegation, is also being challenged by attorneys at the Department of Justice who argue that the serious nature of his crimes should preclude him from being able to “return to the scene of the crime.”

“He is asking for the Court to bless his desire to return to the scene of the crime, and the Court should not look past his criminal conduct the last time he was on Capitol grounds,” the U.S. attorneys wrote in a filing to U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth. The attorneys added in their court filing that, while they had granted previous travel requests to other defendants involved in the Capitol siege, those approvals were to support people’s continued employment, and the requests did not involve travel to the nation’s capital.

TRUMP INAUGURATION: DC POLICE CHIEF EXPECTING ‘4,000 POLICE OFFICERS TO ASSIST US’

However, another Jan. 6 defendant, Eric Peterson, who was convicted of a misdemeanor in November for his involvement in the Capitol riot but has yet to be sentenced, was given approval by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to travel to the District for Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, according to Peterson’s criminal case docket. Notably, the docket did not include any responses from the Department of Justice urging Chutkan to deny Peterson’s request.

There remains uncertainty around whether Trump will pardon any, some, or all of those defendants who were convicted of crimes as a result of their involvement in the U.S. Capitol siege that occurred in 2021.

Trump has said at times that pardons will be reserved for those who remained peaceful on that fateful day; however, at other points he has suggested a blanket pardon for all those who were convicted. One thing that Trump has been steadfast on is that the pardons will come quickly following his inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025.

Sammy Sosa admits to making ‘mistakes’ amid steroid speculation, apologizes to estranged Cubs

0

Sammy Sosa had not been invited back to Wrigley Field, or anything Cubs-related, since he retired in 2007, but all that has changed.

It has long been speculated that Sosa took performance-enhancing drugs during his career, most notably during his home run binge in the late ’90s.

Cubs ownership has long said Sosa would need to apologize and all but admit to taking steroids for the relationship to be mended.

On Wednesday, as the Cubs announced a festival for fans, Sosa admitted he “made mistakes.”

“I left it all on the field for the Cubs and Cubs fans because I wanted to win and make the fans happy. I loved to see the fans at Wrigley in the Right Field Bleachers every home game,” Sosa said in a letter. “I understand why some players in my era don’t always get the recognition that our stats deserve. There were times I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games. I never broke any laws, but in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize.

“We accomplished great things as a team, and I worked extremely hard in the batting cage to become a great hitter. Cubs’ fans are the best in the world, and I hope that fans, the Cubs and I can all come together again and move forward. We can’t change the past, but the future is bright. In my heart, I have always been a Cub and I can’t wait to see Cubs fans again.”

The letter was enough for Sosa to be invited to the 2025 Cubs Convention, owner Tom Ricketts said in a statement.

“We appreciate Sammy releasing his statement and for reaching out. No one played harder or wanted to win more. Nobody’s perfect, but we never doubted his passion for the game and the Cubs,” Ricketts said. “It is an understatement to say that Sammy is a fan favorite. We plan on inviting him to the 2025 Cubs Convention and, while it is short notice, we hope that he can attend. We are all ready to move forward together.”

Sosa is the only player in MLB history to hit at least 60 home runs in three separate seasons. He retired with 609 in his career, which ranks him ninth all time, but PED speculation has kept him out of Cooperstown.

Earlier this year, Sosa walked out of a media session when he was asked about his suspected PED use. He was in Chicago for a memorabilia event, and it was his first time in the Windy City since his career ended.

Sosa is largely credited with bringing baseball back to life with his own personal home run derby with Mark McGwire in 1998 as they both chased, and shattered, Roger Maris‘ record of 61 homers in a season. McGwire hit 70, and Sosa hit 66. Sosa even swore under oath he did not take PEDs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday promised to ask former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for help in locating American veteran and journalist Austin Tice following a letter from Tice’s mother pleading for assistance.

“I haven’t seen President Assad yet, since he came to Moscow – but I plan to do so. I will have a conversation with him,” Putin told NBC during a press conference according to a translator, though he appeared to cast doubt on the former president’s ability to help. “We are adults, we understand – 12 years ago, a person went missing in Syria, 12 years ago.

COLLAPSE OF SYRIA’S ASSAD REGIME RENEWS US PUSH TO FIND AUSTIN TICE

“We understand what the situation was and 12 years ago acts of hostilities were ongoing from both sides. Does President Assad himself know what happened to that U.S. citizen, a journalist who performed his journalistic duty in a combat area?” he asked before giving a shrug.

“Nonetheless, I do promise that I will ask this question to him,” he added.

Putin’s comments came after Debra Tice on Wednesday appealed to the Kremlin chief in a letter to help find her son who went missing after he was detained in Damascus in August 2012.

The Syrian government for more than a decade refused to negotiate the release of Tice, who was abducted while reporting on the uprising against the Assad regime during the early stages of the Syrian civil war, which ultimately ended earlier this month after the Syrian president was ousted and fled to Moscow.

“The current situation in Syria compels us to ask for your help in finding Austin and safely reuniting our family. You have profound connections with the Syrian government, which can be a great benefit for our unrelenting efforts to find our Austin,” she wrote in the letter obtained by Fox News. “In this holiday season of peace and goodwill, we respectfully request your assistance in finding Austin and safely reuniting him with our family.

“We would, of course, be willing to travel to Moscow or any other place on Earth to put our arms around our precious Austin and bring him home safely,” she added.

In an interview with NBC News, Debra defended her decision to write to the authoritarian leader, one of the U.S.’ chief adversaries, and said, “Of course I am reaching out to powerful people, so they can help us.”

“Russia has had a port there in Latakia forever, so I do think they have the ability to know what’s going on the ground. We are still trying to find out where he is,” she emphasized.

“We have fanned out everywhere with every possible source, every possible actor who might be able to get information,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday in his interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” in a transcript sent out by the State Department. “This involves anyone and everyone who has some relationship with the different rising authorities in Syria. We’ve been in direct contact with them ourselves. We have other partners on the ground, and we’re looking at getting on the ground ourselves as quickly as we can.

“But the most important thing is this: Any piece of information we get, any lead we have, we’re following it. We have ways of doing that irrespective of exactly where we are,” Blinken continued. “And I can just tell you that this is the number-one priority… to get Austin.”

Bills’ Josh Allen gushes over fiancée Hailee Steinfeld and her impact on his stellar season

Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins raved about Allen’s relationship with actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld just weeks after the couple got engaged. Dawkins told reporters that he believes Steinfeld has had a massive influence on Allen’s performance – which in turn has meant well for the Bills.

“Josh is having fun, we’re having fun watching him,” he said Wednesday.

“I don’t want to keep bringing energy to it, but I’m telling you, when you have a strong female behind you and when you’re in the right mental space of going home and everything is peaceful and going to your cellphone and seeing a heart in your phone and it just makes you bubble – there’s something about it.”

Allen seemingly agreed with that notion, telling The Associated Press that she’s been “a huge part” of what’s been working for him this season.

‘America first’ vs. ‘America last’: What does Trump’s return mean for US foreign policy?

0

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House next month, what sort of foreign policy can Americans expect during his second stint in the Oval Office?

Trump will pursue an “America first foreign policy,” J. Michael Waller, senior analyst for strategy at the Center for Security Policy, suggested during an interview with Fox News Digital, describing Biden’s approach as “America last.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is advocating for the soon-to-be commander in chief to significantly increase military spending in a bid to build up the nation’s “hard power.”

The long-serving lawmaker is also warning against an isolationist approach to foreign policy, asserting in a piece on Foreign Affairs that “the response to four years of weakness must not be four years of isolation.”

MCCONNELL WARNS RFK JR. TO STEER CLEAR OF THE POLIO VACCINE

“Trump would be wise to build his foreign policy on the enduring cornerstone of U.S. leadership: hard power. To reverse the neglect of military strength, his administration must commit to a significant and sustained increase in defense spending, generational investments in the defense industrial base, and urgent reforms to speed the United States’ development of new capabilities and to expand allies’ and partners’ access to them,” McConnell contended.

“To pretend that the United States can focus on just one threat at a time, that its credibility is divisible, or that it can afford to shrug off faraway chaos as irrelevant is to ignore its global interests and its adversaries’ global designs,” he argued.

Waller, who authored the book “Big Intel,” explained that America-first foreign policy does not mean isolationism.

“It means for the United States to define its national interests very strictly,” without suggesting that every crisis around the globe is “of vital, existential interest to our country,” he noted.

Waller opined in Foreign Affairs that McConnell was seeking to “maintain the uniparty consensus for the United States’ present global commitments that are stretching us beyond our means … without even stepping back to reassess what is really in our national interests and how can we best marshal our resources to ensure them.”

Fox News Digital attempted to reach out to request comment from McConnell, but did not receive a response.

US ‘CLOSER THAN EVER’ TO REACHING HOSTAGE DEAL BECAUSE OF TRUMP, GOP REP SAYS

Trump has tapped Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for secretary of state, a choice Waller graded as a “really good pick.”

Regarding the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, Rubio has said that the U.S. is funding a “stalemate war.”

Trump has called for a ceasefire.

“There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse,” he declared in a post on Truth Social.

Trump has also called for the release of hostages in the Middle East, warning in a post on Truth Social that if they are not released by when he assumes office, “there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity. Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America,” he declared.
