Woman receives pig kidney transplant, walks out of hospital days later

0

An Alabama woman has successfully received a gene-edited pig kidney transplant at NYU Langone Health.

This was the seventh pig organ transplant completed by NYU Langone surgeons.

Towana Looney, 53, miraculously walked out of the hospital just a few days following the procedure.

In an NYU Langone press conference, Looney expressed feeling “overjoyed” and “blessed to have received this gift – a second chance at life.”

“I want to give courage to those out there on dialysis,” she said.

Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst and NYU Langone clinical professor of medicine, joined “America Reports” on Wednesday to share how this should bring hope for the future of transplant medicine.

“We have a great shortage of body organs,” he said. “And even if we get people to donate, we’re still going to have a big shortage … so we’ve got to do something.”

“We can bio-engineer them, or we can use them from other species, [which is] called xenotransplant.”

Siegel commended Looney on her “incredible” journey, which began when she donated her own kidney to her mother 25 years ago.

“She is looking for any other possibility, any other chance, at having a normal life again.”

Looney then developed a rare complication while pregnant, according to Siegel, which led to kidney failure.

NYU Langone Transplant Institute Director Dr. Robert Montgomery called Looney a “hero” while speaking to Siegel in a separate interview.

“She gave the gift of life to her mother,” he said. “She’s someone who already paid a really significant price for an incredible act of generosity.”

“She is looking for any other possibility, any other chance, at having a normal life again.”

HIV-POSITIVE TRANSPLANTS NOW PERMITTED FOR LIVERS AND KIDNEYS

Montgomery shared that he thinks Looney will “change the face of transplantation.”

According to Siegel, Montgomery is one to know about the struggle of waiting for a donated organ, since he himself had a heart transplant after surviving 30 cardiac arrests.

“My epiphany in living through that – and realizing that I probably wouldn’t live through it – was that we needed another source of organs,” said Montgomery, noting that “far less” than 1% of people who die every year are eligible to be an organ donor.

“At the same time, the number of people who can benefit from an organ transplant continues to increase,” he added.

Out of the seven pig organ transplants that have been performed at NYU Langone, Siegel confirmed that “this one worked” to the extent that Looney was able to walk out of the hospital.

Montgomery explained to Siegel that this is because the kidney had been modified with 10 genetic modifications.

“This is going to be a big deal when we get past the rejections,” Siegel said. (Joe Carrotta via NYU Langone Health)

The “key” now, according to the doctor, is to focus on immunology to help ensure that Looney’s immune system doesn’t reject the kidney.

“That’s why going forward, in the future, this is going to be a big deal when we get past the rejections,” Siegel added.

“This is the future.”

Out of the 100,000 people awaiting an organ transplant each year, 80,000 of them are waiting for kidneys, according to Siegel, but this type of transplant could also extend to hearts and livers.

“This is the future,” he said.

The accessibility of lab-manufactured, or bio-engineered, organs is “much farther away” than xenotransplantation, which is “in front of us now,” Montgomery added.

Patrick Mahomes, previously critical of Chiefs’ tight schedule, will play despite ankle injury

0

Earlier this week, Patrick Mahomes said he didn’t want to put himself in “harm’s way” and wanted to “protect” himself after sustaining an apparent ankle sprain.

Now, it seems Mahomes has nothing to be worried about.

The two-time NFL MVP is off the Kansas City Chiefs’ injury report and is good to go for Saturday against the Houston Texans.

Head coach Andy Reid told reporters Thursday Mahomes will “likely” play.

The injury comes at an inopportune time with the Chiefs in a stretch of three games in 11 days due to playing on Christmas Day, a rare Wednesday NFL contest.

“It’s not a good feeling,” Mahomes told reporters last week about the schedule. “You never want to play this amount of games in this short of time. It’s not great for your body. But, at the end of the day, it’s your job, your profession. You have to come to work and do it.

“All you can do is focus on the game. The practice you have that day,” he added. “I try to prepare my body all year long for this stretch. That’s tailoring my workouts, tailoring how you practice and prepare, and the coaches do a great job of taking care of us on the practice field. We practice as hard as anybody, but they know how to dial it back when needed.”

Mahomes injured his ankle in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. X-rays were negative, but backup Carson Wentz entered the game for a brief period.

Mahomes said he wanted to “be able to move” and “get out of the way” if he were to take the field this weekend.

TITANS HEAD COACH GOES ON EXPLICIT TIRADE WHEN ASKED ABOUT TEAM BEING SOFT: ‘TOTAL BULLS—‘

“You don’t want to go out there and put yourself in harm’s way. It’s football. You’re going to take hits, but you want to be able to protect yourself,” Mahomes said this week.

“I don’t want to limit the game plan,” Mahomes said. “That’s another thing for me. I want to be able to still be able to move around the pocket so we’re not just sitting in one spot the whole entire game and leading the D-line to get after it. So, it’s about me finding that balance and seeing where I’m at and, like I said, I won’t know until closer to the end of this week.”

The Chiefs are in a race to maintain their hold on the top seed in the AFC. At 13-1, they have the best record in the league and have a two-game lead over the Buffalo Bills for a first-round bye. But the Bills would hold the tie-breaker over the Chiefs if they finish with the same record because Buffalo beat Kansas City, 30-21, Nov. 17.

A win would improve the Chiefs to 13-1 and closer to clinching the top seed in the AFC.

Jets star Garrett Wilson noncommittal on staying with Jets long term: ‘I don’t know’

0

Garrett Wilson is clearly tired of losing.

The New York Jets star receiver is having the best season of his young career from a statistical standpoint, but, from a team perspective, this year is without a doubt the biggest disappointment he’s been a part of.

Wilson is eligible for a contract extension after the season, but Wilson said he’s unsure if he wants to stay with the Jets long term.

“I don’t know, man. I just do whatever, go about my day however, be where my feet at,” Wilson told reporters Thursday. “If they do [offer an extension] … that’d be awesome.

Wilson added that he “love[s] the Jets … but I can’t be worrying about all that. Just going to finish these three games. I can’t be looking at all that right now.”

Wilson spoke to reporters just hours after a report that owner Woody Johnson nixed a trade for Jerry Jeudy because of Jeudy’s rating in the Madden video game. It’s previously been reported Johnson also wanted Aaron Rodgers benched after the team fell to 2-2, and former general Joe Douglas reportedly said his boss was acting like a “teenager.”

Wilson is on pace to set career highs across the board. He’s had over 1,000 yards each of his first two seasons, a number he likely will surpass this weekend against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Jets are 4-10, but things have gone from bad to worse since they fired Robert Saleh. The Jets were 2-3 when Johnson axed the head coach, and they are 2-7 since.

On the bright side, Aaron Rodgers has turned back the clock recently. He’s thrown 13 touchdowns and just one interception in his last seven games. Maybe Rodgers and Wilson can build off that in 2025 — if Rodgers stays.

‘Hell no’: House Dems erupt over GOP spending deal

0

House Democrats are balking at the latest iteration of a spending plan that was released on Thursday by Speaker Mike Johnson.

“The Musk-Johnson proposal is not serious, it’s laughable. Extreme MAGA Republicans are driving us to a government shutdown,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., indicated Democratic leadership would whip their members to vote “no” on the deal.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., lamented that the last deal had been blown up by opposition from conservatives, with input from DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

“Everybody agreed,” he said, “and then it was blown up by Elon Musk, who apparently has become the fourth branch of government. And that’s just an intolerable way of proceeding.”

“Democrats are going to try to figure out how we can salvage the public good as the wreckage that’s just been pushed.”

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PARTIAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

Chants of “hell no” could be heard inside the room where Democrats were meeting after the bill’s text was released.

The newest continuing resolution, or CR, would extend current government funding levels for three months and also suspend the debt limit for two years, something President-elect Trump has demanded.

It comes after the original 1,500-page CR drew opposition from the right, due to policy and funding riders.

House lawmakers could vote on the new bill as early as Thursday evening.

It’s not immediately clear if the new deal would pass – Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who also led opposition to the initial bill, also blasted the new deal.

“More debt. More government. Increasing the Credit Card $4 trillion with ZERO spending restraint and cuts. HARD NO,” Roy wrote on X.

HOUSE GOP LEADERS SCRAMBLE FOR PLAN B AFTER TRUMP, MUSK LEAD CONSERVATIVE FURY AGAINST SPENDING BILL

With $36 trillion in debt and a $1.8 trillion deficit in 2024, some conservatives are against a CR, which punts the funding deadline to March and keeps spending at 2024 levels, entirely.

Without conservative Republicans’ votes, Johnson will need to rely on Democrats to help get spending legislation across the House floor.

Trump praised the deal minutes after Fox News Digital reported its contents.

The deal also includes aid for farmers and roughly $110 billion in disaster relief funding for Americans impacted by storms Helene and Milton.

It would also include certain health care provisions minus reforms to the Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) system that some Republicans and Democrats were pushing for – but others vehemently opposed.

Trump said of the deal, “Speaker Mike Johnson and the House have come to a very good Deal for the American People. The newly agreed to American Relief Act of 2024 will keep the Government open, fund our Great Farmers and others, and provide relief for those severely impacted by the devastating hurricanes.”

“All Republicans, and even the Democrats, should do what is best for our Country, and vote ‘YES’ for this Bill, TONIGHT!” he wrote.

Shortly after Fox News Digital’s report, House leaders released the legislative text of the bill. It came in at about 116 pages, a far cry from their original 1,547-page legislation.

House Democrats are balking at the latest iteration of a spending plan that was released on Thursday by Speaker Mike Johnson.

It comes after conservatives led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy torpedoed Speaker Mike Johnson’s initial government funding plan on Wednesday, prompting fears of a partial government shutdown right before the holidays.

GOP hardliners were furious about what they saw as unrelated measures and policy riders being added to the bill at the last minute.

House Republicans began negotiations for a “clean” bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), but those were also upended when Trump urged GOP lawmakers to pair a CR with action on the debt limit – which was expected to be a contentious battle in the first half of next year.

Musk and Ramaswamy also lent their voices to the fight, with Musk calling on any Republican who supported the deal to lose their House seats.

In addition to averting a partial government shutdown through March 14, the bill also included a provision to allow for the revitalization of RFK stadium in Washington, D.C.; permits to sell ethanol fuel year-round; and the first pay raise for lawmakers since 2009 – both measures that did not get into the latest deal.

Governor Abbott unveils new campaign exposing horrific dangers of illegal immigration

0

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced a new billboard campaign on Thursday to warn potential illegal immigrants about the “horrific” reality of human trafficking, violence and danger facing them if they attempt to illegally enter the U.S.

Abbott said the state is placing dozens of billboards with warnings in several languages throughout Mexico and Central America.

“We’re here to expose the truth to immigrants who are thinking about coming here, the truth about the traffickers who assault so many of the women and children along the way,” the governor said. “The message is: Do not risk a dangerous trip just to be arrested and deported.”

Abbott, who recently made another trip to the border with the incoming border czar, Tom Homan, also emphasized that the new Trump administration will “prioritize for deportation illegal immigrants who have been arrested.”

Billboards will be written in Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic, and will be placed along migrant travel routes.

The governor made his announcement at a ranch on the southern border. He was standing by a burned “rape tree,” where property owners have said migrant women were routinely raped. Abbott said the billboards “tell the horror stories of human trafficking” and “inform potential illegal immigrants about the reality of what will happen to them if they try to enter Texas illegally.”

One billboard written in Spanish depicts a little girl and simply asks: “How much did you pay to have your daughter raped?”

Abbott criticized governments and private groups who “make it sound like it may be harmless going into the state of Texas,” and said the state is trying to “provide reality facts for immigrants thinking about coming here to save their lives, to save them from sexual assault, save them from being arrested and let them know there are consequences if they take any further steps to come to the state of Texas.”

“This is tough medicine, but we want no more rape trees in Texas,” said Abbott. “Do not make the dangerous trek to Texas.”

The governor went on to lament the historic surge in illegal immigration under the Biden administration, saying: “It’s a deadly situation, a horrific situation, a horror that we fully expect to end beginning in about a month when President Trump takes office and shuts down the border and restores safety and normalcy to the immigration process.”

Theodore Roosevelt didn’t display a White House Christmas tree while in office, but why?

0

Presidents past and present have displayed breathtaking Christmas trees at the White House.

Former President Benjamin Harrison is credited by the White House Historical Association as the first to display a Christmas tree in the White House, having placed one in the Second Floor Oval Room in 1889.

That first known Christmas tree to be displayed in the White House was adorned with candles for Harrison’s grandchildren, according to the White House Historical Association.

PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT SOLD CHRISTMAS TREES TO LOCAL RESIDENTS ON HIS OWN ESTATE IN THE 1930S

It is believed that when Theodore Roosevelt took office in 1901, the Christmas tree tradition was absent throughout his presidency. The answers to whether the Christmas tree was “banned” during this time, and why, are not explicitly clear.

According to History.com, Roosevelt “banned the Christmas tree from the White House,” with “environmental reasons” possibly to blame.

The National Christmas Tree Association echoed a similar idea, noting on their website that in 1901, Roosevelt tried to stop the practice of having Christmas trees in homes because of concern about the destruction of forests.

According to the Forest History Society, the tradition of a Christmas tree at the White House was one not established until the 1920s, with presidents prior to Roosevelt making a decision to have a tree and others choosing not to.

AMERICANS TRAVEL TO FAMILY-OWNED CHRISTMAS TREE FARMS TO PICK THE PERFECT PINE: ‘PEOPLE LOVE IT’

During the early days of the Christmas tree, it was mainly those families with young children who chose to display and decorate one in their homes, according to the source.

The White House Historical Association described the alleged Roosevelt ban on Christmas trees at the White House as a “myth,” with little evidence to support the claim other than the simple fact that the family chose not to put up a tree.

The Roosevelt’s did celebrate Christmas with many popular traditions like gift exchanges, attending church service and enjoying a lovely meal as a family, but chose not to put up a tree, according to the source.

Though, in 1902, young Archibald “Archie” Roosevelt, the president’s son, sneakily put a miniature tree in a closet of the White House that he decorated and proudly presented to his family.

WHITE HOUSE SELECTS NORTH CAROLINA FAMILY’S CHRISTMAS TREE FARM TO PROVIDE 2024 TREE

After that, according to the White House Association, the president allowed the tradition to continue.

Many researchers have provided the reason for Roosevelt not having a large tree on display during his presidency as one connected to his conservationism, but according to the White House Association, it was because the Christmas tree tradition was simply one not practiced by the family.

It was several years later, in 1912, when the very first Christmas tree was put up on display in the Blue Room by former President William H. Taft’s children, according to the source, as a means to surprise their parents when they returned from being away.

It was during former President Dwight Eisenhower’s presidency when the Christmas tree found a home in the Blue Room consistently by first lady Mamie Eisenhower. This was continued by first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, according to the White House Association.

Kennedy was also responsible for the tradition still held today of decorating the Blue Room tree with a theme, which she began in 1961.

The initial Christmas tree theme chosen by Kennedy was the “Nutcracker Suite” ballet. The 2024 White House theme chosen by first lady Jill Biden was a “Season of Peace and Light,” according to WhiteHouse.gov.

Another modern tradition that has withstood the test of time is the annual National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, which was started in 1923 by former President Calvin Coolidge.

The tree lit in 1923 was a 48-foot Balsam fir, according to the National Christmas Tree Lighting website.

Beginning in 1966, the National Christmas Tree Association has provided a Christmas tree to be displayed in the Blue Room of the White House.

The 2024 White House tree came from the family-owned and operated Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm in Newland, North Carolina.

Pentagon says the number of US troops in Syria is double from previous reports

0

The Pentagon says there are 2,000 U.S. troops deployed in Syria, more than double what officials with the Department of Defense have been telling reporters for months.

“We have been briefing you regularly that there are approximately 900 U.S. troops deployed to Syria,” Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Ryder told reporters during a press briefing on Thursday. “In light of the situation in Syria, and in significant interest, we’ve recently learned that those numbers were higher.”

Ryder asked to look into the numbers and said he learned on Thursday that there are about 2,000 U.S. troops in Syria.

“It was explained to me these additional forces are considered temporary rotational forces that deploy to meet shifting mission requirements, whereas the core 900 deployers are on longer term deployments,” he continued. “As you know, for many of our deployments, numbers will fluctuate from time to time, but given that this number is significantly higher than what we’ve been briefing, I wanted to let you know, as soon as I found out this information.”

The lead spokesman said there are diplomatic and operational security considerations with deployments and the numbers of troops associated with those deployments, as was the case with Syria.

Ryder noted that the troops were in Syria before the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad – who fled to Russia earlier this month and ended a nearly 14-year struggle to maintain power in his country – and help augment the defeat of ISIS mission.

After learning of the fluctuation in number of troops, Fox News’ Pentagon correspondent Jennifer Griffin pressed Ryder about the correction to the number of troops and timing.

“This is more than double the number of troops that we’ve been told for quite some time. So, are we talking about this has been going on for months? For Years?” Griffin asked. “Is this something that just happened this summer? We need a time frame.”

“Yeah, I think it would probably be fair to say at a minimum, months,” Ryder said. “I’ll go back and look. But it’s…yeah, it’s been going on for a while.”

The news of additional troops in Syria comes as interest in the region is exceptionally high, especially after the fall of Assad.

Attacks by the Turkish military on Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have increased since the Syrian president fled to Russia on Dec. 8. In an interview with Fox News this month, Gen. Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the SDF, warned that if his Kurdish fighters have to flee, ISIS would return.

He also said half of his fighters guarding the ISIS camps had to withdraw.

“All of the prisons still are under our control. However, the prisons and camps are in a critical situation because who is guarding them? They are leaving and having to protect their families,” Gen. Mazloum said. “I can give you one example like the Raqqa ISIS prison, which contains about 1,000 ISIS ex-fighters. The number of guards there have diminished by half which is putting them in a fragile position.”

Fox News previously reported that the U.S. had 900 troops in Eastern Syria, but now that number is about 2,000, and they would likely have to withdraw if the allied Kurdish fighters retreat under attack from Turkey’s military, which views the Kurds as a terrorist threat.

Rowling re-shared an old Twitter post (before it became X) from Dec. 19, 2019, in which she blasted those who fired a British woman after she claimed there were only two sexes. That tweet kicked off five years of Rowling being outspoken against those who insist there’s no difference between trans women and biological women.

She captioned her old post on Wednesday, stating, “Five years ago today and my only regret is that I didn’t speak out sooner. To every girl and woman who’s paid a heavy price for fighting to retain their rights and boundaries, to every person striving to halt an appalling medical experiment on minors, I salute you. We will win.”

Rowling’s original post read, “Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?”

Ever since that post, Rowling has been at the center of a pitched cultural battle online that has seen her lose employees, fans and even close friends.

The famous stars of the Harry Potter film adaptations even denounced the author’s views. British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played the films’ title character, wrote an open letter for the pro-LGBTQ organization, The Trevor Project in 2020, ripping Rowling’s stance.

“Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

That same year, series star Emma Watson countered Rowling’s rhetoric on social media with a post of her own that read, “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”

“I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are,” Watson wrote in a subsequent post.

Rowling has since responded to the actors, posting in 2024 that they can “save their apologies.”

“Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single-sex spaces,” she wrote.

Despite the backlash that Rowling has incurred because of her stance, she has yet to back down from her stance.

In the five years since her original post, the author has never backed down from slamming far-left pro-trans individuals online.

In one of her more famous Twitter threads from 2020, Rowling wrote, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”

In another viral post from 2020, Rowling ripped an article referring to women as “people who menstruate.” The author mocked the piece, posting, “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

More recently, Rowling slammed HBO late-night host John Oliver for defending trans females playing in women’s sports competitions.

In a lengthy post from Nov. 2024, Rowling stated, “Nothing about this feels good, because John Oliver generously gave his time for my charity Lumos and I liked him very much when I met him, but God knows, if you ever need an example of motivated reasoning and confirmation bias, this video’s for you. An undoubtedly intelligent person spouts absolute bulls— to support something he wants to be true, but isn’t.”
