Rockin’ around the congressional Christmas tree: Lawmakers pass bill to prevent a government shutdown

0

“Rockin’ around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop” – Brenda Lee

It’s a yuletide tradition on Capitol Hill.

An annual custom of rockin’ around a congressional Christmas tree, festooned with hundreds of legislative ornaments, Advent appropriations and mistletoe modifications.

A political Polar Express chugs through the halls of Congress nearly every December. It’s always the last piece of legislation huffing out of the congressional station.

WHAT TO EXPECT AS REPUBLICANS TRY TO SALVAGE SPENDING PACKAGE, AVOID GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

“All aboard!” hollers the conductor.

Get your Noel needs loaded into the baggage car of this train, or it’s going to be left behind.

So, lawmakers decorated their “Christmas tree” in the only way they know how.

That resulted a few days ago in the colossal 1,547-page interim spending bill to avoid a government shutdown.

The sheer scope of the bill was breathtaking.

You want a hippopotamus for Christmas? You surely would have gotten it with this plan.

It wasn’t long until House Republicans pulverized the legislation.

“It’s another cram down,” fumed Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, the morning after congressional leaders released the bill. “Here’s what you get. ‘Do this or shut the government down.’ So, it’s very disappointing.”

Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., didn’t gift wrap his criticism.

“It’s a total dumpster fire. I think it’s garbage,” decreed Burlison. “It’s shameful that people celebrate DOGE coming, and yet we’re going to vote for another billion dollars to be added to the deficit. It’s ironic.”

Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., mocked his colleagues for talking out of both sides of their mouths when it came to spending.

“We keep on saying we want to take the deficit and the debt seriously. But we keep on voting to increase it. You can’t have it both ways,” he said. “This is irresponsible.”

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, lamented this was business as usual.

“I mean, the swamp is going to swamp, right?” proffered Roy.

THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE INTERIM SPENDING BILL

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said the following in the fall:

“We have broken the Christmas omni. I have no intention of going back to that terrible tradition. There won’t be a Christmas omnibus,” Johnson declared Sept. 24. “We won’t do any ‘buses.’”

So, yours truly pressed Johnson about his promise after frustrated Republicans upbraided him during a House GOP Conference meeting.

“You said back in September there would be no more Christmas omnibuses. You were not doing anymore ‘buses,’” I asked. “But how is this not yet another Christmas tree at the holidays?”

“Well, it’s not a Christmas tree. It’s not an omnibus,” responded Johnson.

Johnson is technically right. In appropriations parlance, it’s not a true omnibus — even though outside observers and many lawmakers themselves might colloquially refer to the massive bill as an “omnibus.” An omnibus is where Congress gift wraps all 12 individual spending measures into one package. A “minibus” is where a handful of bills are bundled together.

MIke Johnson

Even so, I reminded Johnson of the opprobrium directed at this legislation.

“They called this cram down. They said it was garbage. Those are your own members calling it that,” I noted.

“Well, they haven’t even seen it yet,” said Johnson, even though the bill materialized the night before. “I’ve got a couple of friends who will say that about any end-of-year funding measure. This is not an omnibus, OK? This is a small CR (continuing resolution) that we’ve had to add things to that were out of our control.”

The legislation was stocked with a hefty price tag to cover the entire cost of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. A radioactive pay raise for lawmakers. Health care provisions. Language about concert ticket prices. Emergency aid for farmers. And $110 billion to help cover devastation from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

“It was intended to be, and it was until recent days, a very simple, very clean CR stopgap funding measure to get us into next year when we have a unified government,” said Johnson. “But a couple of intervening things have occurred. We had, as we say, acts of God. We had these massive hurricanes.”

But then Elon Musk torched the bill. President-elect Trump demanded an immediate debt ceiling increase. Debt limit deals are one of the most complex and contentious issues in Congress. They require weeks if not months of painstaking negotiations.

HOUSE GOP LEADERS SCRAMBLE FOR PLAN B AFTER TRUMP, MUSK LEAD CONSERVATIVE FURY AGAINST SPENDING BILL

This wasn’t as simple as presenting Santa at the mall a wish list of items for Christmas morning.

The bill began bleeding support just hours before the House planned a vote.

But to paraphrase Charles Dickens’ opening line in “A Christmas Carol” about Jacob Marley, “That bill was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever, about that.”

Democrats were flabbergasted at outside last-minute ultimatums. Especially since Johnson attended the Army-Navy football game last week with Trump. How could they not have discussed the contours of this bill?

“It was blown up by Elon Musk, who apparently has become the fourth branch of government,” Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., scoffed about the bill. “So, who is our leader, (House Minority Leader) Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., supposed to negotiate with? Is it Mike Johnson? Is he the speaker of the House? Or is it Donald Trump? Or is it Elon Musk. Or is it somebody else?”

Johnson and company then prepped a svelte 116-page bill to fund the government. But bipartisan lawmakers roasted that measure faster than chestnuts by an open fire.

Elon Musk on stage

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., mocked Republicans for insisting that they adhere to their internal “three-day rule.” That allows lawmakers to ponder bills for three days before a vote. Yet Republicans were now racing the new bill to the floor faster than shoppers rushing home with their treasures.

“Have you printed it? How many pages is it? What happened to the 72-hour rule?” mocked Moskowitz.

The bill plummeted to an embarrassing defeat on the House floor. It only scored 174 yeas, punctuated by an eye-popping 38 Republican nays.

“The Democrats just voted to shut down the government,” Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, the vice president-elect, claimed. “They’ve asked for a shutdown, and I think that’s exactly what they’re going to get.”

By Friday, there was a third bill. And despite grousing, lawmakers finally passed the legislation. There was no need to go to “Plan Z,” popularized in “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.” The House approved the bill in the early evening. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., hit the Senate floor late Friday night.

“Democrats and Republicans have just reached an agreement that will allow us to pass the CR tonight before the midnight deadline,” said Schumer.

Critics of the third bill might characterize the entire process as a “railroad.” But it was an actual railroad that prevented the Senate from passing the bill on time. An unnamed Republican senator placed a hold on nominees to Amtrak’s board. But once senators resolved that problem, the Senate finally aligned with the House to prevent the shutdown around 12:45 a.m. ET Saturday, 45 minutes after the midnight deadline.

The slenderized bill included disaster aid and emergency assistance for farmers. But when it came to appropriations, the legislation simply renewed all current funding at present levels. It was definitely not a “Christmas tree.” It just kept the government running through March 14. So no holiday crisis.

Merry Christmas.

But beware the Ides of March.

Travis Hunter wants to become the NFL’s Shohei Ohtani, and, if it’s up to his head coach, he just may become that player.

The two-way Colorado star parlayed his offensive and defensive skills into becoming the Heisman Trophy winner, playing well over 1,000 snaps this season.

He also won both the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best receiver and the Bednarik Award as the defensive player of the year.

Experts have him playing cornerback in the NFL. But after Hunter caught 92 passes for 1,152 yards and scored 14 touchdowns on offense, Deion Sanders says whoever drafts him better let him put his abilities to full use.

“He’s gonna do that, or they shouldn’t draft him. Don’t do that,” Sanders told “The Rich Eisen Show” this week.

“And I’m gonna make sure of that. Don’t draft him if you’re not gonna give him the opportunity to play on both sides of the ball.”

CHIEFS ARE MOTIVATED BY DOUBTERS WHO SAY RECORD IS A FLUKE, STAR SAYS: ‘WE’LL JUST KEEP SHOWING UP’

Sanders said a team could be “creative” with Hunter.

“He don’t have to do what we did with him here and play every snap,” Sanders added.

Hunter played 670 snaps on offense and 686 snaps on defense while also playing 24 special teams snaps. As a corner, Hunter had 31 tackles, 11 pass deflections and four interceptions, anchoring Colorado’s defense.

Despite projecting as a cornerback in the NFL, he might have actually been better on offense this year.

Hunter is expected to be an early selection in April’s NFL Draft, and there’s a chance his quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s son, could be the top pick.

Henderson is also the all-time leader in runs scored. He was named the American League MVP in 1990 after leading the AL with a 1.016 OPS, 65 stolen bases, and 119 runs scored.

He played for the Yankees, Padres, Mets, Mariners, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Angels, and Dodgers.

“For multiple generations of baseball fans, Rickey Henderson was the gold standard of base stealing and leadoff hitting. Rickey was one of the most accomplished and beloved Athletics of all-time,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “He also made an impact with many other Clubs during a quarter-century career like no other. Rickey epitomized speed, power and entertainment in setting the tone at the top of the lineup. When we considered new rules for the game in recent years, we had the era of Rickey Henderson in mind.

“Rickey earned universal respect, admiration and awe from sports fans. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest condolences to Rickey’s family, his friends and former teammates, A’s fans and baseball fans everywhere.”

Henderson won two World Series – one with the A’s in 1989 and another with Toronto four years later.

Henderson became the MLB’s all-time stolen bases leader on May 1, 1991, when he swiped third base in Oakland – he finished with 1,406 in his career, surpassing Lou Brock by nearly 500 bags. Henderson also retired with 2,295 runs scored, 50 more than Ty Cobb. His 3,055 hits are also 27th all-time.

His 130 stolen bases in 1982 are the most in the live-ball era – he and Vince Coleman are the only players since 1920 to have three seasons of at least 100 stolen bases. Henderson swiped 50 bags in 13 seasons, the most ever.

NYPD’s top cop resigns amid subordinate’s bombshell sex harassment allegations

0

The NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed police officer resigned abruptly Friday amid bombshell allegations he demanded sexual favors from his subordinates on the force, the latest scandal to rock the NYPD and the Adams administration.

The sudden resignation of Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey came just hours before Lt. Quathisha Epps, who holds an administrative post in Maddrey’s office, filed a sexual harassment complaint against him with the state Division of Human Rights, according to documents obtained by Fox News Digital.

Epps claims Maddrey “engaged in a quid pro quo sexual harassment” by coercing her into performing unwanted sexual favors in exchange for overtime opportunities in the workplace.

NYPD BOSS RESIGNS AS DEM MAYOR’S INNER CIRCLE FACES POSSIBLE CORRUPTION PROBE

The complaint also alleges Maddrey forced Epps to “take care” of another female officer, “to subject that officer to unwanted sexual advances and conduct, including sexual intercourse, within the workplace.”

Epps also accuses Maddrey, who is married, of maintaining an inappropriate sexual relationship with another female detective, subjecting Epps to “further sexually offensive conduct in person and through her cellular phone.”

The NYPD said in a press release Saturday morning that NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell had taken the position of interim chief of department Friday night and that Philip Rivera is now interim chief of patrol.

The release made no mention of Maddrey, but the NYPD on Saturday confirmed to Fox News Digital that Maddrey had resigned from the NYPD, although the agency would not provide a reason.

“Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch accepted the resignation of Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey Friday night, effective immediately,” an NYPD spokesperson said via email. “The NYPD takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously and will thoroughly investigate this matter.”

NYC MAYOR ERIC ADAMS BELIEVES FEDERAL CHARGES AGAINST HIM ARE POLITICALLY MOTIVATED: ‘DID NOT BREAK THE LAW’

Epps made headlines earlier this week when the New York Post, citing payroll records, revealed she earned a whopping $400,000, including roughly $204,000 in overtime alone last year, for her administrative job in Maddrey’s office. She claims in the filing that Maddrey cooked her overtime figures in October after she started rejecting his advances.

She says that led to a criminal and internal investigation against her in retaliation.

Epps, in the complaint, said she met with Maddrey earlier this week with the intention of leaving the force after she says she was portrayed publicly as an “overtime abuser.” She says Maddrey demanded a sexual favor, to which she complied. Afterward, she filed for retirement from the NYPD via a Vested Interest Retirement Pension.

A spokesperson for Adams said his office is “deeply disturbed by these allegations, and the NYPD is investigating this matter.”

Edward Caban

“Mayor Adams is working in close coordination with Police Commissioner Tisch as the NYPD conducts a separate department-wide review to ensure no high-ranking officers are using their power inappropriately. We will refrain from commenting further to avoid jeopardizing either investigation.”

The controversy is the latest turmoil to hit the NYPD. Former Commissioner Edward Caban resigned in September amid the swirling federal investigation surrounding New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Adams then appointed Tom Donlon, a former FBI counterterrorism expert, as interim commissioner, and he was replaced after two months by Tisch, who was then appointed on a permanent basis.

Adams was indicted by a federal grand jury in September and faces five charges, including bribery, soliciting campaign contributions from foreign nationals, wire fraud and conspiracy. Federal prosecutors charged Adams with accepting luxury travel perks and illegal campaign contributions from a Turkish official and other foreign nationals looking to buy his influence. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Ingrid Lewis-Martin, a top adviser to Adams, resigned Sunday and has since been indicted on bribery charges.

Prosecutors said Lewis-Martin and her son raked in over $100,000 and got other help in exchange for her speeding approvals for construction projects. She has pleaded not guilty.

Ronny Deila named Atlanta United’s new head coach

0

Atlanta United appointed Ronny Deila as its new head coach Friday, bringing the Norwegian manager back to Major League Soccer where he previously led New York City FC to the 2021 MLS Cup title.

Deila signed a contract that runs through the 2027 MLS season. He will report directly to club President and CEO Garth Lagerwey.

The 49-year-old brings a stocked trophy cabinet to Atlanta, having won six major titles across multiple countries, including four league championships and two domestic cups during his 17-year coaching career.

“We believe his style of play aligns with the club’s philosophy as we look to build a team that will compete for trophies consistently,” Lagerwey said.

Deila’s most recent position was with Al-Wahda in the United Arab Emirates Pro League, where he compiled a 5-2-3 record. Before that, he managed Club Brugge in Belgium’s top division, posting a 28-10-11 record and averaging 1.94 points per game until his dismissal in March 2024.

His path to Atlanta includes successful stops at several high-profile clubs. At Celtic FC in Scotland, Deila secured back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles in 2015 and 2016, along with the 2015 Scottish League Cup.

During his tenure with NYCFC from 2020 to 2022, he compiled a 46-29-15 record and led the club to its first MLS Cup championship in 2021.

Deila’s coaching career began in his native Norway, where he first made his mark with Strømsgodset. Taking over in 2008, he guided the club to the 2010 Norwegian Cup and, most notably, their first league title in 43 years in 2013.

“This is a club with great ownership, excellent facilities, and the ambition to succeed and continue to drive the league forward,” Deila said. “I’m happy to return to MLS, a competitive league that I enjoy.”

Before transitioning to coaching, Deila enjoyed a 20-year playing career in Norway as a defender, making 352 professional appearances and scoring 32 goals. He spent the majority of his playing days with Odd, where he made 240 appearances and scored 22 goals between 1993 and 2004.

Atlanta United won the MLS Cup in 2018.

MARTA pays tribute to Black History with special buses

MARTA honored Atlanta Civil Rights icons with specially designed buses in 2024 as part of a year-long celebration of Black History.

“MARTA history is Black history,” said MARTA general manager and CEO Collie Greenwood.

Over the past year, the transit authority celebrated icons including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Juanita Jones Abernathy, Congressman John Lewis and Lillian Miles Lewis, Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery and Evelyn Gibson Lowery, and Ambassador Andrew Young.

“This yearlong celebration was an opportunity to celebrate the profound contributions the Black community has made to our transit agency, Atlanta, and the world,” Greenwood said.

“As we honor the past, we remain committed to ensuring transit is a place where all are welcome, and much like the Civil Rights movement, where inclusion and equality serve as the foundation for opportunity.”

A year in review

The Dr. King and Coretta Scott King bus was revealed on Jan. 4 at the King Center as part of the King Holiday observance, with the bus also joining the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade on Jan. 15.

In early April, at the end of Women’s History Month, a bus was dedicated to Jones.

On Sept. 12, MARTA dedicated a bus in honor of John Lewis and Lillian Miles Lewis with a ceremony at College Park Station.

Lewis was a key figure in the original Freedom Rides that desegregated the interstate bus system.

He was also a steadfast advocate for MARTA, recognizing the vital role public transportation plays in creating opportunities for all.

On October 6, the Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery and Evelyn Gibson Lowery bus was unveiled at the Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute for Justice & Human Rights.

Rev. Dr. Lowery, who served on the MARTA Board for 24 years, including four as chairman, played a crucial role in establishing MARTA’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program, ensuring that minority businesses benefited from the region’s transit investments.

The Civil Rights Icons bus series ended in late November with a dedication to Young.

The ceremony featured remarks from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and former mayors Keisha Lance Bottoms, Kasim Reed, Shirley Franklin, and Bill Campbell.

During his time in the House of Representatives, Young secured federal funding for MARTA and continued to support the system throughout his tenure as Atlanta’s mayor from 1982 to 1990.

This year, all five specially designed buses have been seen throughout MARTA’s service area, participating in community events and local celebrations. A new bus honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King will be unveiled in January 2025 for the King holiday. Remaining in service will be the Abernathy, Lewis, Lowery, and Young buses.

Women’s prayer group alleges harassment from pro-trans activists during ‘Save Girls Sports’ protests

0

A contentious school board meeting in Riverside, California, drew large opposing protests outside the district office Thursday night. One side argued to “Save Girls Sports,” wearing T-shirts with that message, while the other side came equipped with transgender pride flags and signs.

Members of a women’s prayer group that attended the protests on the “Save Girls Sports” side has alleged the pro-transgender side harassed them during the event and interrupted their attempts at public speaking and filming content.

The prayer group, Young Women for America (YWA)’s Inland Empire chapter in California, alleged pro-transgender activists showered them with insults Thursday in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

“Members of the pro-LGBTQ groups started heckling and harassing the people in line who were speaking in opposition of their values. Some of these adult protesters were even coming up to the young girls that were going to be speaking and were yelling at them close to their face,” YWA Inland Empire Chapter President Tori Hitchcock alleged.

Hitchcock claims the harassment forced them to move their prayer circle away from the offices.

(Allen J. Schaben/Los Angeles Times)

“Seeing how quick these protesters were wanting to make a scene, we decided that we needed to wait and move our prayer rally away from the main lot for safety reasons. We were able to find a spot that was removed but overlooking the event, which allowed us to really visualize what we were praying for. We spent time also praying over the young female athletes who were there to speak. Many of them were the students who were ostracized by their school,” Hitchcock said.

Hitchcock did not name an specific individuals in her harassment allegations.

Other witnesses present Thursday have provided their accounts of the events to Fox News Digital.

Julianne Fleischer, an attorney for the religious liberties legal firm Advocates for Faith & Freedom, was at the protests Thursday to conduct a pre-meeting press conference that included a parent whose family had been affected by a transgender athlete competing on a girls sports team.

“It was initially peaceful, but the LGBTQ activists became increasingly more vocal and were trying to stir up agitation by heckling people,” Fleischer said.

Fleischer also claims the pro-trans activists were using megaphones to drown out the sound of normal conversation.

“The LGBTQ activists were screaming and blowing their megaphones so as to prevent SGS supporters from participating in media interviews. We moved media away from the LGBTQ activists to a more secluded area so the activists couldn’t interfere with SGS supporters’ ability to talk to the media,” Fleischer added.

California Family Council Vice President Greg Burt told Fox News Digital he also witnessed the pro-trans activists actively interrupting the pro-girls protests and interviews.

“They had bullhorns, and every time someone used a camera to do a video, they would jump behind and make noise,” Burt said.

ENRAGED PARENTS SCREAM AT SCHOOL BOARD FOR ALLOWING TRANS ATHLETE IN GIRLS’ SPORTS: ‘TEACH THEM SELF CONTROL!’

One anonymous parent told Fox News Digital about witnessing a child being bombarded with vulgar insults by pro-trans protesters after the meeting.

“My 16-year old son and a few others were standing outside after speaking when a group of the LGBTQ community intentionally walked by them pointing at each one of them saying, ‘FU FU FU,’” the anonymous parent said.

Footage reviewed by Fox News Digital showed a sizable pro-LGBTQ presence at the event. The limited footage reviewed showed the protesters standing calmly. Multiple accounts have suggested the pro-LGBTQ protesters outnumbered the “Save Girls Sports” protesters.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) for verification but has not received a response.

Thursday’s RUSD board meeting was anticipated nationally amid an ongoing controversy at Martin Luther King High School, which has since spread to other schools in the district. A transgender athlete on the girls cross-country team prompted students to wear the shirts that said “Save Girls Sports” in protest. But those students were punished by administrators, some with detention. A lawsuit filed by two girls cross-country runners alleges the school compared the T-shirts to swastikas.

But the student body responded in support of their biologically female classmates by wearing the shirts in droves of hundreds at a time. Many of the students posted photos on social media of them wearing the shirts together, and some were sitting in detention.

Eventually, the school stopped disciplining students after more than 400 Martin Luther King High School students showed up wearing the shirts Dec. 11.

Sources have told Fox News Digital students at Arlington High School, Riverside Polytechnical High School and Romona High School have also been seen wearing the shirts at their respective schools.

Ryan Starling, the father of a girl at the school who is involved in a lawsuit against the school, spoke at the press conference outside the district office Thursday. The lawsuit alleges Starling’s daughter, Taylor, lost her varsity spot to a transgender athlete and that her T-shirt to express opposition to the athlete competing was compared to a swastika.

“It’s just heartbreaking to see what my daughter has gone through this season,” Starling said.

“This is unfair. This is completely unfair. It breaks my heart as a father to see my daughter go through this and have it stripped away from her, have her come up to me and just hug me. And I can’t do anything about it. So, it’s just heartbreaking.”

The father of the other girl involved in the lawsuit, Dan Slavin, previously told Fox News Digital he “couldn’t even digest” hearing that his daughter’s shirt was compared to a swastika.

“I didn’t even know how to digest that right away,” Slavin said. “There were no words. I still can’t even digest it to this day. It’s unfathomable. It’s strange. It’s weird. I’m sure there were better illustrations they could use instead of that one.”

In a statement previously provided to Fox News Digital, RUSD said it has allowed the transgender athlete to compete on the team because it must comply with California state law.

“It is important to remember that RUSD is bound to follow California law, which requires that students be ‘permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records,'” the statement said.

“As these matters play out in our courts and the media, opposition and protests should be directed at those in a position to affect those laws and policies, including officials in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento.”

California has had laws in effect to protect transgender athletes in women’s sports since 2014. That year, AB 1266 took effect, giving California students at scholastic and collegiate levels the right to “participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.”

Former porn star calls on adult websites to make age verification ‘mandatory’

0

Former porn star turned pastor Brittni De La Mora is calling on age verification laws to become “mandatory” to “protect children” as Florida is set to effectuate legislation on the matter in January.

Pornhub will soon no longer be available to Florida users after the Sunshine State instituted a new age verification rule for access to adult sites. Taking effect Jan. 1, 2025, the age verification rule is tied to the state’s HB 3, a measure that aims to protect minors online.

Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo, emphasized to Fox News Digital that it favors implementing effective age verification, just not specifically in the way Florida’s law was designed, saying other outlets have incorrectly reported it doesn’t support age verification at all.

“They’re deflecting accountability by saying that they don’t want to follow a simple law, which is age verification for pornography,” De La Mora said on “The Ingraham Angle.” “I don’t know exactly what they’re doing with their money, but I do believe that they are not out to protect young children.”

“Fifty-eight percent of minors that have watched pornography for their very first time — they watched it by stumbling upon it through a pop-up ad and so forth. And they weren’t looking for porn — porn was looking for them,” De La Mora said.

LAURA INGRAHAM: THE PORN INDUSTRY HAS BEEN FREE TO PROFIT OFF SELLING TOXIC MATERIAL TO MINORS

Per the bill, a website or application that “contains a substantial portion of material that is harmful to minors” will be required to verify the age of the user. Through an “anonymous or standard age verification method,” it must confirm the user is 18 or older to proceed with engagement.

In response to the specifications of the measure, Aylo elected to halt access to the adult site in Florida, saying in a statement that collecting “highly sensitive personal information” puts “user safety in jeopardy.”

“First, to be clear, Aylo has publicly supported age verification of users for years, but we believe that any law to this effect must preserve user safety and privacy, and must effectively protect children from accessing content intended for adults. Unfortunately, the way many jurisdictions worldwide, including Florida, have chosen to implement age verification is ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous. Any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy. Moreover, as experience has demonstrated, unless properly enforced, users will simply access non-compliant sites or find other methods of evading these laws,” Aylo told Fox News Digital in a statement.

The statement later continued: “The best solution to make the internet safer, preserve user privacy, and prevent children from accessing adult content is performing age verification at the source: on the device. The technology to accomplish this exists today. What is required is the political and social will to make it happen. We are eager to be part of this solution and are happy to collaborate with government, civil society and tech partners to arrive at an effective device-based age verification solution. In addition, many devices already offer free and easy-to-use parental control features that can prevent children from accessing adult content without risking the disclosure of sensitive user data.”

Florida residents still using the app ahead of the deadline are met with a countdown pop-up of how many more days they have access to the site.

“Did you know that your government wants you to give your driver’s license before you can access PORNHUB?” the pop-up reads. “As crazy as that sounds, it’s true. You’ll be required to prove you are 18 years or older such as by uploading your government ID for every adult content website you’d like to access.”

The pop-up also addressed how it supports minors not having access to the site, and said that preventing use is a “good thing.” It directed readers to alternative methods of blocking minor access, such as “Device-Based Age Verification.”

De La Mora continued: “I was in the porn industry for seven years, and I would be paid extra money to do aggressive, abusive scenes.”

She expanded on how the “pulling hair, spitting and choking” acts often used in porn clips have become “sexual education” for young people.

After speaking with some young girls, De La Mora said many expressed not wanting to have sex again after their first sexual experience.

“I don’t blame the young boys. They are watching pornography, and this is what’s filling their minds, and this is what’s teaching them how to have sex,” she said.

“Protecting children is not a violation of your First Amendment rights in any way. I believe that our government has an obligation to protect children,” De La Mora said, arguing that adult content is “not created with children in mind.” “It is created for adults, and yet there has been no accountability for porn companies.”

MSNBC hosts taking pay cuts following major ratings slump

0

If they want to remain with their network, then MSNBC hosts Joy Reid and Stephanie Ruhle may have to take pay cuts.

According to news site, The Ankler, MSNBC has been looking to negotiate new deals and both Reid and Ruhle have been reportedly asked to reduce their salaries.

Ruhle, who hosts “The 11th Hour” at 11 p.m. weeknights, currently makes $2 million per year, while Reid earns $3 million per year for hosting “The ReidOut” on weeknights at 8 p.m.

JOY REID SUGGESTS BIDEN RECOVERING FROM COVID IS ‘EXACTLY THE SAME THING’ AS TRUMP SURVIVING ASSASSINATION

News of the salary negotiations have come during a period of major shake-ups for the liberal channel.

Ratings have slumped, MSNBC’s parent company, Comcast, has announced it will spin-off the channel into another company named SpinCo. and employees are reportedly panicking about potential layoffs.

According to a report from The New York Post from last month, “panic engulfed” MSNBC headquarters after the announcement of MSNBC’s new home.

During a meeting led by NBCUniversal chairman Mark Lazarus, who is set to lead SpinCo., shared “Staffers fearing looming layoffs peppered him with questions about whether the network will need to change its name, logos and headquarters after reports surfaced that the new entity could be cut off from the reporting muscle of NBC News,” The Post’s sources said.

One MSNBC source told the outlet, “Everyone is in a panic because everything is up in the air.”

Stephanie Ruhle speaks on MSNBC's Morning Joe

Stephanie Ruhle, who hosts “The 11th Hour” on MSNBC, will be getting a pay cut if she stays in her anchor position.

MSNBC “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski also stirred up drama following Trump’s win by having a face-to-face meeting with the president-elect at his Mar-a-Lago residence in November to “restart communications” between the two parties.

The meeting ginned up a major backlash among liberals, with “Morning Joe” viewership plummeting an additional 17 percent in addition to the already 35 percent drop in their total viewership this year.

Reid, who has been with the channel since 2011 and has had a primetime slot since 2020, has experienced a massive ratings drop since Trump’s election, losing nearly half of her entire audience since then.

The far-left MSNBC anchor has shed 47% of her total audience, averaging just 759,000 viewers after averaging 1.4 million viewers throughout 2024 leading up to Election Day, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Ratings have dropped for several of the channel’s biggest stars, like “All In” host Chris Hayes, who lost 56 percent of his key demo viewers in the 8 p.m. ET time slot Tuesday through Friday following Election Day.

“Last Word” host Lawrence O’Donnell also took a hit with his audience, averaging just 930,000 total viewers since the election and 78,000 in the key demo, losing more than 40% in each metric.

Maddow, whose show airs on Monday nights only, lost 43 percent of her viewers. Like Reid and Ruhle, Maddow has also taken a pay cut.

The Ankler reported last month that Maddow would take a $5 million per year “pay cut” and would now make $25 million per year for the next five years.

MSNBC did not immediately reply to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
