DC pizzeria owner got more praise than backlash for viral Trump post: ‘Tired of the divisive rhetoric’

0

One Washington, D.C. pizzeria owner said she received more support than backlash for her congratulatory message to President-elect Trump on his 2024 win, arguing the praise was indicative of the fact that voters are “tired” of polarized politics.

Mariya Rusciano, who runs Menomale Pizza alongside her husband Ettore, joined “The Faulkner Focus” to discuss how the public responded to her viral X post.

“People started wishing… for our restaurant to go out of business, and now we’ve been here since 2012,” Rusciano told Harris Faulkner on Friday.

“Then they started saying how D.C. doesn’t need fascist pizzerias. They asked, how can we, as immigrants, congratulate President Trump? Then, of course, we were called all sorts of names… One lady in particular yelled profanities at my husband on the street.”

D.C. RESTAURANT SERVER FIRED AFTER COMMENTS ABOUT REFUSING SERVICE TO SOME TRUMP OFFICIALS

“But outside of that, it’s been mostly limited to social media,” she continued. “But there has been some upside to what we did because… As the post started going viral across DC and the region, we received many more messages of support far outweighing the negative comments, which really showed me that people, even in a place like D.C., are tired of the divisive rhetoric, and it’s about time we come together and start honoring one another as fellow Americans.”

“The people have spoken. @realDonaldTrump won the popular vote and the electoral college. Congratulations!” The Menomale Pizza owner wrote. “Can we gift @WhiteHouse a nice Italian wood burning pizza oven?”

The post was flooded with angry comments from D.C. residents, where over 92% of the electorate voted for Vice President Kamala Harris.

One local asked Rusciano if she was “trying to go out of business.”

MAJORITY OF SMALL BUSINESSES ANTICIPATE REVENUE SPIKES UNDER TRUMP’S 1ST YEAR IN OFFICE: DATA

“What an odd tweet! You were on my radar as I spend a lot of time in Brookland but I am so confused – are you trying to go out of business?” an X user named Lisa posted in reply.

Several others threatened that they would boycott the pizzeria or cursed out the business owners for their “tone-deaf” remark.

But Rusciano said she was just following suit with what other companies in Washington, D.C. have historically done as they engage in political debate.

“Quite frankly, restaurants in D.C. talk and post about politics regularly,” Rusciano said. “There was one particular establishment, I don’t remember the name now, that was posting that they’ll be popping bottles of champagne if Harris wins, so, quite frankly, we were just… hopping on the trending topic, trying to promote ourselves.”

“And while I did expect some unhappy comments, I did not see that it would go as viral as it did,” she continued.

Rusciano previously clarified that she would’ve posted a similar message had Harris won the election and didn’t feel like they were “doing anything unique” among D.C. businesses by sharing a post about the election in the political town.

Faulkner asked if she had felt pressure to keep her workers safe following the social media stir.

“Things have been calm, and it’s business as usual,” she responded.

Senate Republicans try to fast-track emergency military pay as they brace for shutdown

0

FIRST ON FOX: Two Senate Republicans are leading the charge to ensure military members are paid during a potential partial government shutdown as Congress inches closer to the midnight deadline on Saturday morning.

Three Senate sources confirmed to Fox News Digital that Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, is leading an attempt to “hotline” a bill to make sure all armed services and the coast guard are paid in the event of a partial government shutdown.

A hotline is a procedure used by senators usually to pass procedural motions or relatively noncontroversial measures. The practice allows bills or motions to pass with often very little or no public debate at all.

TOP SENATE DEMS POUR COLD WATER ON LATEST GOP SPENDING BILL PLANS: ‘READY TO STAY’ THROUGH CHRISTMAS

Dan Sullivan

Sen. Sullivan is leading an effort to fast track a bill to ensure military pay during a shutdown.

Sullivan will take the Senate floor to make a live request for unanimous consent to consider the measure at 6 p.m.

The bill is entitled the Pay Our Troops Act. It is cosponsored by Republican Sens. Lisa Murskowski of Alaska, Ted Budd and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Steve Daines of Montana, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio and Rick Scott of Florida, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Rounds of South Dakota and JD Vance of Ohio.

A spokesperson for Murkowski told Fox News Digital in a statement, “Senator Murkowski is adamant that our Armed Forces should not worry about their paycheck or their mission to keep Americans safe because of Congressional politics. This is non-negotiable for her.”

One Republican source told Fox News Digital that they expect Senate Democrats to object to the request, noting that they have done so in the past.

The effort is extending to the House side again as well, where Fox News Digital was told that Rep. Jen Kiggans, R-Va., is pressing for a vote on the version she introduced in the House.

“We’re obviously pushing to keep the government open, but as a backup plan, we need to be providing reassurance to our military,” Kiggans said, adding she’s spoken with House GOP leaders about getting a vote on her bill.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla quips that he wished ref a ‘Merry Christmas’ in irate postgame outburst

0

If it looked as though Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was irate with referees at the end of Thursday night’s loss to the Chicago Bulls, that would be incorrect to assume. At least, that is what Mazzulla would like people to think.

Following the 117-108 loss, Mazzulla charged the court looking to have words with official Justin Van Duyne seemingly in reference to the back-to-back technicals the official gave him and Celtics forward Jaylen Brown in the fourth quarter.

Several people had to hold Mazzulla back. He was eventually ushered off the court without incident.

During his postgame presser, Mazzulla said he received a technical for walking on the court – something he admitted he should not have done. However, when asked what “message” he was trying to deliver at the end of the game, Mazzulla had an interesting explanation.

“I hadn’t seen them in a while, so just a ‘Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,’” he said with a serious expression.

“I wasn’t sure I was gonna see them before the holiday, and you just can’t let a moment go by where you wish someone the best to them and their families.”

Brown, however, was not wishing anyone a happy holiday in his interactions with game officials.

“I said to (Van Duyne), ‘You called a tech for no reason.’ He said, ‘If you say to it me again, I’m going to call another tech,’” Brown said, explaining that he approached Van Duyne to clarify what Mazzulla’s tech was for.

“You can’t threaten guys with a technical foul, that’s not part of the game either. If you want to fine guys for gesturing and all that stuff – fine that. That’s some bulls—.”

A new survey has revealed the top 25 steakhouses in the United States — with some keen insight into the latest trends on how Americans are enjoying beef.

The top 25 steak spots are found in 16 states, according to Yelp. Nine of these states — California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington — have two restaurants each on the list.

The nation’s top spot is Penumbra, located in Chicago, Yelp said. Penumbra currently has a perfect five-star rating with nearly 1,000 reviews.

STEAK CAN BE COOKED TO PERFECTION WITH A ‘VERY HOT’ SURFACE AND OTHER SIZZLING TIPS FROM CHEFS

The restaurant is described as “intimate” and romantic, according to Yelp, with steaks that “cut like butter” and are “cooked and seasoned perfectly.”

Yelp reviewers also praised the sides at Penumbra.

Penumbra, a Chicago steakhouse with a menu inspired by the chef’s Ecuadorian heritage, has been named the top spot by Yelp for steak. (Penumbra)

Three of the top 10 steakhouses are Brazilian-style restaurants, which feature all-you-can-eat meats, Yelp said.

At a Brazilian steakhouse, “meat skewers are slow-grilled over an open flame, then served rodizio style – carved tableside until you say, ‘I’m full,'” according to Yelp.

RECIPE IS ‘HAWAIIAN CLASSIC’ USING TERIYAKI SHORT RIBS INSTEAD OF CANNED MEAT

The three Brazilian steakhouses that made the top 10 list are fifth-ranked Fazenda Gaúcha in Bedford, Texas; sixth-ranked Passador Brazilian Steakhouse in Alpharetta, Georgia; and ninth-ranked Brasão Brazilian Steakhouse in Plano, Texas.

Other South American cuisines were featured in the top 10, according to Yelp, including the No. 1-ranked Penumbra, whose menu “reflects the chef’s Ecuadorian childhood.”

The two Florida restaurants in the top 25 are both Argentinian-inspired, according to Yelp.

These restaurants are No. 4 La Cosecha Argentinian Steakhouse in Medley, Florida, and No. 8 Bunbury in Miami.

Not all the spots on the top 25 list are upscale, fine-dining establishments.

Several restaurants have a much more casual atmosphere and lower price point.

The No. 3 spot, Shay’s Steaks in Philadelphia, has a menu centered on sandwiches.

At Shay’s Steaks, “the iconic cheesesteak gets a serious upgrade, with filet mignon or prime rib stuffed into each sandwich,” Yelp said.

On its Yelp page, Shay’s Steaks reviewers claim it is home to the “best Philly cheesesteak ever” and “is the absolute best of the best.”

Similarly, at 16th-ranked Steak Shack in Honolulu, Hawaii, customers order from a walk-up window.

EAGLES FAN FAVORITE IS PHILADELPHIA’S SIGNATURE SANDWICH, NO PEPPERS REQUIRED

The restaurant’s specialty – a 6-ounce “steak plate” featuring rice, salad and steak, cooked to order – is priced under $13.

The largest serving at Steak Shack – a 14-ounce “steak plate” – is $22.80.

Customers can also opt for a mixture of chicken and steak.

Chargers dominate 2nd half to overcome double-digit deficit against Broncos, inch closer to playoffs

0

In a battle of Oregon quarterbacks, the veteran reminded the rookie who is boss.

Justin Herbert’s Los Angeles Chargers dominated the second half en route to a 34-27 win over Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos’ offense was running on all cylinders early – Audric Estime found the end zone for the first score of the game, and Bo Nox threw touchdowns to both unlikely targets in Michael Burton and Devaughn Vele. Gus Edwards’ first quarter touchdown tied it, but the Chargers’ offense stalled afterward.

Los Angeles did catch a break, though, as the Broncos were called for fair catch interference as time expired on their punt, giving the Chargers a “fair catch kick,” which Cameron Dicker nailed from 57 yards out. Thus, the Broncos led 21-13 at the half. Amazingly, the last successful fair catch kick was back in 1976 … by the San Diego Chargers.

Denver kicked a field goal to start the third quarter, but they committed a late hit on third down to give the Chargers 1st and goal. They took advantage, and Edwards scored again, but their two-point conversion was no good, keeping it a 24-19 game in favor of the Broncos.

However, after forcing a punt, Herbert found Derius Davis for a score, and Joshua Palmer made a great tip-toe grab for the two-point conversion, giving Los Angeles a 27-24 lead with 12:23 to go.

The Chargers were able to contain the Broncos for the rest of the night, and after a big run by Herbert on 3rd and 10 with under four minutes left, Los Angeles was able to waste even more clock. A couple of plays later, Hassan Haskins scampered into the end zone, and it was a 34-24 LA lead with 2:27 to go.

The second the Broncos got in field goal range, they kicked to make it a seven-point deficit, valuing time over the touchdown. However, their onside kick was unsuccessful, and the Chargers were able to waste away the rest of the clock for the win.

In all, it was 21 unanswered points for the Chargers, who now sit in second place in the AFC West behind the 13-1 Kansas City Chiefs, before that late field goal.

Herbert finished 23 for 31 with 284 yards and his two touchdown passes. Ladd McConkey led the team with six receptions for 87 yards, and it was the eighth game in a row the rookie had 50-plus receiving yards. He is one game away from tying the all-time rookie record set by Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014.

Nix impressed yet again, going 29-for-40 with 263 yards.

Both teams completed passes to 10 different receivers – the 20 combined pass-catchers are the most in the NFL this season.

Bo Nix

The Chargers can coast into the playoffs, as their final two games are against the Patriots and Raiders, but both are on the road. As for Denver, it’s a tougher finish with Cincinnati and the Chiefs on the docket.

L.A. Times owner reportedly ‘alarming’ staff with demands for editorial board to relax on Trump criticism

0

According to a new report from ex-CNN journalist Oliver Darcy, the owner of The Los Angeles Times has directed his outlet’s editorial board to pull back from writing about President-elect Donald Trump.

In a recent article, the independent journalist reported on a memo he obtained from Times staff complaining about how Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong has been directly stepping when it comes to the paper publishing articles critical of Trump, as well as making other editorial decisions.

According to the memo, which was sent to Executive Editor Terry Tang and signed by multiple Opinion section staffers, Dr. Soon-Shiong instructed the editorial board to “take a break from writing about” the president-elect.

Darcy shared that staff signed off on the memo because they viewed Dr. Soon-Shiong’s moves as “alarming actions,” and noted their commitment to reporting “anything that might cast a shadow on the Times’ reputation.”

Dr. Soon-Shiong

L.A. Times staff have reportedly expressed anxiety over their outlet’s owner, Dr. Soon-Shiong, and his “alarming actions” in trying to make the paper’s editorial board less liberal. (Marcus Yam / Contributor)

“We understand that Dr. Soon-Shiong has a role in shaping the tone and direction of the editorial board and Opinion section, but we are still bound by the core values and ethics of journalism, including a duty to be transparent and act in service of the public,” the memo read.

It added, “We believe we have an obligation to report these under the ethics policy, which states that ‘the primary goal always should be to protect The Times’ integrity.’”

As Darcy wrote, the memo also alleged that Dr. Soon-Shiong has “instituted a new policy that prohibits editorials containing criticism of the president-elect unless they are presented side-by-side with another opinion piece representing the ‘opposing view.’”

The report continued, “This new restriction, which appears to apply only to matters involving Trump and not to other officials or issues, has effectively killed or indefinitely delayed multiple editorials that have been written and edited but remain unpublished.”

The memo also accused the owner of requiring the editorial board to send him text of every editorial and their authors’ names before they’re published. “Editorial board positions and content have been preemptively censored before publication, and its arguments, headlines and topics subjected to boundaries that did not previously exist,” the memo noted.

LA TIMES OWNER’S DAUGHTER ON WHY PAPER REFUSED TO ENDORSE 2024 CANDIDATE: ‘GENOCIDE IS THE LINE IN THE SAND’

The report is the latest news about the L.A. Times owner’s mission to make the paper a “middle-of-the-road, trustworthy news source,” a mission he went public with upon announcing in October that the paper’s editorial board would not be endorsing a presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

The declined endorsement received a major backlash, with the paper losing over 20,000 subscribers. Some journalists and contributors also quit the paper in the response.

Despite the outrage, the owner has continued pushing for a non-partisan L.A. Times. He announced last month that the paper would be forming a “new Editorial Board” with diverse voices on it, including conservative CNN political commentator, Scott Jennings.

“Trust in media is critical for a strong democracy,” he wrote on X while touting his ambitions for a new board.

In an interview with Fox News in November, Dr. Soon-Shiong said, “It is our responsibility to maintain democracy, to have the views of all our California readers, in fact, the views of all the national readers to be aired. Because if we just have the one side, it becomes nothing else but an echo chamber.”

The L.A. Times did not immediately reply to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Biden heads to Vatican City next month to meet with Pope, Italian heads of state

0

The White House announced that President Joe Biden will head to Italy next month for a public meeting with Pope Francis in Vatican City before his term comes to an end.

Biden accepted the invitation to visit Vatican City during a phone call with Pope Francis Thursday, according to the White House.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that Biden would meet with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella during the overseas trip. The four-day trip is planned for the second week in January, and the meeting between Biden and Pope Francis will occur in front of an audience on Jan. 10.

“President Biden will have an audience with the Pope and discuss efforts to advance peace around the world,” Jean-Pierre said Thursday. “He will also meet with Italy’s leaders to highlight the strength of the U.S.-Italy relationship, thank Prime Minister Meloni for her strong leadership of the G7 over the past year, and discuss important challenges facing the world.”

Italy’s position as president of the G7 countries, a position that rotates annually, will come to an end in the new year. The G7 is a cohort of the world’s largest advanced economies.

Biden’s trip to meet with Pope Francis will come shortly after the Vatican begins its Holy Year on Dec. 24, a centuries-long tradition that occurs every 25 years, during which pilgrims travel to Rome to visit holy sites and receive forgiveness.

Biden is only the nation’s second Catholic president, after John F. Kennedy. He has met with popes, including Francis, throughout his political career. The trips have also been reciprocated by Francis, who made his first formal visit to the U.S. when Biden was vice president.

Biden last met with Pope Francis in June, during which the pair discussed both the war in Israel and the war Russia is waging against Ukraine. The leaders reportedly emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the need to cement a hostage deal during their talks. They also spoke about the ongoing humanitarian impacts of Russia’s war against Ukraine, according to the U.S. embassy in Italy.

The pair met in 2021 as well, which was only the second time a U.S. president other than Kennedy had met with a pontiff. During the private talk, Biden reportedly lauded Francis’s leadership “in fighting the climate crisis, as well as his advocacy to ensure the pandemic ends for everyone through vaccine sharing and equitable global economic recovery.”

MAR-A-LAGO TRUMPS WHITE HOUSE AS PRESIDENT-ELECT OVERSHADOWS BIDEN ON WORLD STAGE

One area where the two leaders’ viewpoints notably diverge is abortion, however. Due to Biden’s pro-choice stance, many critics, including Catholic bishops, questioned early on in his presidency whether Biden could continue receiving Holy Communion. But following the June meeting at the Vatican, Biden said that Francis expressed support for Biden to be allowed to continue receiving the sacrament.

It will mark a rare occurrence, according to the Associated Press, which noted that the last president to travel overseas during the final month of his presidency was fellow one-term President George H.W. Bush. Bush traveled to Moscow and Paris on diplomatic missions to shore up a nuclear treaty and discuss the Bosnian war that was taking place at the time with France’s then-president, according to historical records from the State Department.

Georgia is reportedly preparing for life without starting quarterback Carson Beck in the College Football Playoff.

Beck is reportedly exploring surgery options to repair an injury to the elbow on his throwing arm and is unlikely to return this season, sources told ESPN Thursday.

On the last play before halftime in the SEC Championship game, Beck went to throw a Hail Mary, but the Texas defender hit his arm as he threw.

The Bulldogs quarterback went down to the ground in pain and was replaced by sophomore Gunner Stockton in the third quarter.

Stockton was 12-16 with 71 yards and one interception, replacing Beck in the second half. In overtime, the sophomore quarterback had to leave the game because he took a massive hit to the head area.

So, Beck, while hurt, re-entered the game to hand the ball off to running back Trevor Etienne, who scored the game-winning touchdown.

After the game, Beck talked about not having had a good grip on the ball during the play, according to On3.

Because Georgia beat Texas 22-19 in overtime to win the SEC Championship where Beck got hurt, they secured a first round-bye as the No. 2 seed. They play the winner of No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 10 Indiana.

Stockton is in line to make his first career start in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Stockton is 25-32 passing for 206 yards in limited action across three games this season.

While Beck may not start in the College Football Playoffs, the senior quarterback’s Georgia career is not necessarily over as he has one more year of eligibility.

Beck could declare for the NFL Draft anyway, forgoing his last year of eligibility. The senior quarterback could also stay at Georgia for another season, or enter the transfer portal to try and boost his stock.

This season, Beck has completed 64.7% of his passes, throwing for 3,485 yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, leading Georgia to an 11-2 record.
