Just five days before Christmas, President-elect Donald Trump announced he is appointing outspoken conservative and president of CatholicVote Brian Burch to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.

The Vatican, also known as the “Holy See,” is the center of the Roman Catholic Church, which is led by Pope Francis. There are roughly 52 million Catholics in the U.S.

Burch, a father of nine, is an outspoken supporter of the president-elect. His organization, CatholicVote, a conservative activist group, issued its first presidential endorsement in Trump’s favor this year.

Catholic voters across the country swung massively toward Trump in the 2024 election, contributing to his surprise blowout victory on election night.

In his post announcing the nomination, Trump credited Burch for his significant gains among Catholic voters in November, saying that Burch “represented me well during the last Election, having garnered more Catholic votes than any Presidential Candidate in History!”

“I am pleased to announce that Brian Burch will serve as the next United States Ambassador to the Holy See,” said Trump. “Brian is a devout Catholic, a father of nine, and President of CatholicVote. He has received numerous awards, and demonstrated exceptional leadership, helping build one of the largest Catholic advocacy groups in the Country.”

“Brian loves his Church and the United States – He will make us all proud,” the president-elect said. “Congratulations to Brian, his wife Sara, and their incredible family!”

Burch responded to his nomination by posting on X: “To God be the glory.”

“Words cannot express my gratitude to all those that have helped me achieve this nomination,” said Burch. “I am deeply honored and humbled to have been nominated by President Trump to serve as the United States Ambassador to the Holy See.”

He thanked his family, the CatholicVote team and gave special credit to his recently deceased father who, he said, “taught me to love the Church and the blessings and responsibilities of being a citizen of the U.S.”

“The Catholic Church is the largest and most important religious institution in the world, and its relationship to the United States is of vital importance,” said Burch. “I am committed to working with leaders inside the Vatican and the new Administration to promote the dignity of all people and the common good. I look forward to the confirmation process and the opportunity to continue to serve my country and the Church.”

CatholicVote also responded to the announcement, saying the group is “immensely proud” of Burch and that his nomination “is a testament to the importance of Catholics to the United States.”

“Under Brian’s leadership, CatholicVote has launched influential campaigns exposing violence against Catholic churches and uncovering government overreach targeting Catholics and pro-life advocates,” the group said. “Beyond his professional work, Brian is a devoted husband and father of nine children. His commitment to family life informs his passion for building a culture that upholds the dignity of every human person and supports the central role of families in society.”

The new Trump administration will have several Catholics in high-ranking positions, including Vice-president JD Vance, Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio, Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and border czar Tom Homan.

The position of ambassador to the Holy See requires Senate confirmation.

Harley Davidson, Jaguar among 2024’s ‘Worst of the Woke’ award winners

0

FIRST ON FOX – Some of the biggest names in business, education, sports and entertainment are among the winners of this year’s “Worst of the Woke” Awards.

The New Tolerance Campaign (NTC), a watchdog group that targets “intolerance, double-standards” and what it calls “phony tolerance” of various institutions, announced the honorees of its annual competition on Friday.

“It’s amusing to look back at the wild woke moments that span the year, but it’s important to remember that these are all major brands and institutions that hold tremendous sway over our culture,” NTC President Gregory T. Angelo told Fox News Digital.

“If the New Tolerance Campaign isn’t calling them out and the public isn’t pushing back, things like radical gender ideology and divisive DEI become the accepted status quo,” he added. “We have a duty to mock this stuff.”

ROBBY STARBUCK SAYS CAMPAIGN AGAINST CORPORATE WOKENESS IS A CALLING: ‘ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE’

Woke Awards

Mattel won a “woke” award for unveiling “the world’s first gender-neutral doll” with the launch of its Creatable World toy line.

“Kids have a blank canvas and all the pieces they need to create their own customizable characters again and again! Dress the doll one way for one character, then switch it up for someone completely different!” the Barbie company wrote on its website.

Harley Davidson was a recipient this year for comments made by its CEO Jochen Zeitz, who went viral for referring to himself as “the Taliban in a sustainable way,” and that his goal was to “take on” and “redefine” “traditional capitalism.” The motorcycle giant was also called out for its DEI initiatives, which the company announced were being rolled back following social media backlash.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SLAMS BRAKES ON ‘WOKE’ POLICIES AFTER SPARKING BIKER AND SOCIAL MEDIA OUTRAGE

Another “woke” winner is Jaguar, which raised eyebrows last month for its bizarre ad featuring androgynous models instead of showcasing any of its luxury cars.

In Hollywood, the big winner is the now-cancelled Disney+ show “The Acolyte,” the Star Wars spin-off series that was accused of oozing DEI ideology.

“It refused to stay true to Star Wars lore and instead sought to shoehorn as much DEI into every episode as possible: an all-lesbian coven of Force Witches lamenting the galaxy not accepting ‘women like us,’ asking an alien for its pronouns, a pronounced emphasis on race, and more all featured in the show,” NTC said. “Series creator Leslye Headland even went on-record, stating that the inclusion of ‘queer’ communities in the program was deliberate because it ‘would be natural’ in an all-female community.”

In the world of education, the two winners were Columbia University and Harvard University.

Columbia won its “woke” award for anti-Israel unrest that unfolded on campus, including the takeover of Hamilton Hall and how the school year ended with its university-wide commencement ceremony being canceled due to safety concerns. Harvard was honored for its meltdown following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, which included canceled classes in order to give students “space to process the election.”

Two of this year’s most-watched sporting events, Super Bowl LVIII and The Paris Olympics, were also award recipients.

Super Bowl LVIII received a nod for showcasing the “Black National Anthem” in addition to the National Anthem meant for all Americans. And the Summer Olympics won for its controversial opening ceremony which included drag queens depicting “The Last Supper.”

NTC gave its “2024 Champion of Tolerance” award to conservative activist Robby Starbuck for putting a spotlight on DEI programs in corporate America and compelling companies to “stand down.”

“Businesses long synonymous with blue-collar Americana such as Harley Davidson, Caterpillar, Ford, John Deere, and Tractor Supply were targets of Starbuck exposés that resulted in a rollback of DEI policies, termination of participation in the deceptively named ‘Corporate Equality Index,’ and an end to ‘woke’ employee trainings. American corporations are getting back to bottom-line basics, and Starbuck is responsible for showing them the way,” NTC wrote.

Starbuck was thrilled to accept the award.

“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to fight for normal Americans who just want sanity from their workplaces and the stores they shop at,” Starbuck said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“With the support of millions of Americans, we’ve done what many said was impossible. It turns out the impossible is possible with the right plan and determination. I won’t stop trying to do the impossible to better our country. Together we WILL make corporate America sane again,” he added. “This award belongs to the millions of people who’ve supported my work… Without them nothing changes. To all of those people, I’m eternally grateful to be in this fight with you by my side.”

White House pressed on Biden refusing to speak publicly ahead of shutdown

0

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre volleyed away reporters’ questions on Friday about President Biden’s lack of public appearances amid the ongoing government funding fight as a partial shutdown looms.

Jean-Pierre refused to answer why the president has not spoken to the American public about his position, and she instead blamed Republicans, President-elect Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and their “billionaire friends” like Elon Musk for the chaos on Capitol Hill.

“Why hasn’t President Biden said anything in the public about this? Don’t the American people deserve to know why millions of federal workers could enter this holiday period without a paycheck?” Jean-Pierre was asked during her daily press briefing.

RAND PAUL SUGGESTS REPLACING MIKE JOHNSON WITH ELON MUSK AS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

“All Americans need to know that Republicans are getting in the way here and they are the ones who have created this mess. That’s the reality. That’s the fact,” she responded. “This is not the first time we’ve been here. And the president has had this approach before. He understands how Congress works. He’s been around for some time. He understands what strategy works here to get this done.”

Jean-Pierre said Friday that Biden has held phone calls with Democratic leaders in Congress — Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. — but would not say if the president has spoken to the House speaker with regard to the ongoing discussions.

“He has been getting regular updates from his team. His team has been in touch with congressional members from both sides of the aisle,” she said.

A streamlined version of a bill backed by Trump to avert a partial government shutdown failed to pass the House of Representatives on Thursday night.

The bill, which needed two-thirds of the House chamber to pass, failed by a vote of 174 to 235. The national debt has soared to over $36 trillion, and the national deficit is over $1.8 trillion.

Jean-Pierre said Republicans went back on their word and “blew up this deal.”

“Republicans need to stop playing politics with a government shutdown. And they are doing the bidding. They’re doing the bidding of their billionaire friends. That’s what we’re seeing at the expense of hard-working Americans,” she said.

SENATE REPUBLICANS TRY TO FAST-TRACK EMERGENCY MILITARY PAY AS THEY BRACE FOR SHUTDOWN

“There is a bipartisan agreement that Republicans tanked because of what they were directed to do by Elon Musk and President-elect Trump. That’s what happened. That is the reality that we’re in now.”

Musk, an outspoken critic of government waste, has weighed in on the spending bill debate and led a conservative revolt against the first 1,547-page bill due to its bloated spending provisions, calling for lawmakers who supported the bill to lose their seats.

He supported the newer, slimmer version, which was ultimately rejected by House members.

Reporters tried several different ways to try and get Jean-Pierre to comment on the president’s role in the matter, but she continued to sidestep.

“The president is the President of the United States, and he is leading,” she told a reporter, to which he responded: “To be clear, the strategy is he is leading by staying in the background?”

“The strategy is that Congress, Republicans in particular, need to do their jobs and get out of their own way and focus on the American people, not their billionaire friends. That is what needs to happen. And that’s what the president wants to see,” she replied.

Jean-Pierre also warned that a shutdown could disrupt the presidential transition process for the incoming administration.

“If there is a shutdown — and I don’t want to get too much into hypotheticals — but this is the reality, transition activities will be restricted with limited exceptions, obviously, such as to prevent imminent threats to the safety of human life or the protection of property,” she said.

Meanwhile, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said Friday that Republicans have a “good plan” to avoid a partial government shutdown.

Rep. Stephanie Bice, R-Okla., added: “I think you come to an agreement, then you get together and sit down and figure out, you know, if we can get across the finish line. And that’s probably what we’re about to do now.”

Justin Trudeau looks set to lose power after key ally vows to topple him

0

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday looked set to lose power early next year after a key ally said he would move to bring down the minority Liberal government and trigger an election.

New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, who has been helping keep Trudeau in office, said he would present a formal motion of no-confidence after the House of Commons elected chamber returns from a winter break on Jan. 27.

NEWT GINGRICH SAYS TRUMP MAY HAVE ‘BROKEN’ TRUDEAU GOVERNMENT DURING HISTORIC TRANSITION PERIOD

If all the opposition parties back the motion, Trudeau will be out of office after more than nine years as prime minister and an election will take place.

A string of polls over the last 18 months show the Liberals, suffering from voter fatigue and anger over high prices and a housing crisis, would be badly defeated by the official opposition right-of-center Conservatives.

The New Democrats, who like the Liberals aim to attract the support of center-left voters, complain Trudeau is too beholden to big business.

“No matter who is leading the Liberal Party, this government’s time is up. We will put forward a clear motion of non-confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons,” said Singh.

The leader of the Bloc Quebecois, a larger opposition party, promised to back the motion and said there was no scenario where Trudeau survived. The Conservatives have been calling for an election for months.

A few minutes after Singh issued his letter a smiling Trudeau, under growing pressure to quit after the shock resignation of his finance minister this week, presided over a cabinet shuffle.

Trudeau’s office was not immediately available for comment.

Votes on budgets and other spending are considered confidence measures. Additionally, the government must allocate a few days each session to opposition parties when they can unveil motions on any matter, including non-confidence.

Before Singh made his announcement, a source close to Trudeau said the prime minister would take the Christmas break to ponder his future and was unlikely to make any announcement before January.

Liberal leaders are elected by special conventions of party members, which take months to arrange.

Singh’s promise to act quickly means that even if Trudeau were to resign now, the Liberals could not find a new permanent leader in time for the next election. The party would then have to contest the vote with an interim leader, which has never happened before in Canada.

So far around 20 Liberal legislators are openly calling for Trudeau to step down but his cabinet has stayed loyal.

The timing of the crisis comes at a critical time, since U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is due to take office on Jan. 20 and is promising to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada, which would badly hurt the economy.

The premiers of the 10 provinces, seeking to create a united approach to the tariffs, are complaining about what they call the chaos in Ottawa.

Tech journalist putting together investor group to buy Washington Post

0

Tech reporter Kara Swisher is working toward assembling a group of investors to purchase The Washington Post from billionaire Jeff Bezos.

“The Post can do better… it’s so maddening to see what’s happening. … Why not me? Why not any of us?” Swisher told Axios in a report on Friday.

The Washington Post has reportedly suffered an exodus of high-profile talent, is losing money, has struggled to fill key positions and has seen employee morale plummet in recent years. The paper also irked readers when it announced this year that it would not endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. The decision, which angered multiple staffers at the paper and prompted some editorial staff members and staffers to resign, was favored by Bezos.

BEFORE NON-ENDORSEMENT DECISION, WASHINGTON POST CALLED TRUMP ‘DREADFUL’ AND ‘WORST PRESIDENT OF MODERN TIMES’

However, Bezos has given no indication he is willing to sell.

Swisher preemptively rejected pro-Trump billionaire Elon Musk’s participation in the investor consortium in comments to Axios.

“Hopefully not Elon,” Swisher said, “though he seems pretty busy these days being President (Not) Elect.”

Musk has become a target of attacks from liberal media outlets and Democratic lawmakers after he endorsed and supported President-elect Trump’s campaign.

“Elon Musk, the guy who really runs things. He’s not just Trump’s co-president. I think that’s way too low a title,” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes said during his Wednesday monologue. “He’s the head dude in charge and House Republicans certainly know who they are taking their marching orders from.”

While Musk has yet to respond directly to Swisher’s comments, he entered the media landscape in full force by purchasing Twitter in 2022. Musk has since changed the name of the company to X, aiming to create an “everything app.”

Axios CEO Jim VandHei responded to Swisher’s mention of Musk on X, saying: “She expects lots of competition IF Bezos budges on selling. “Hopefully not Elon,” she said. Doubt [Musk] wants Post…”

Swisher and The Washington Post did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

LeBron James offers theory for declining NBA ratings: ‘We gotta do something’

0

It’s no secret the NBA is facing an uphill battle.

The league’s declining ratings have stretched far beyond just the first week and have continued as Christmas Day, normally an NBA spectacle, approaches.

Many reasons have been tossed around as to why ratings are down, but the common suggestion is that the regular season is becoming a lot like what the All-Star Game has been recently.

In recent years, the midseason contest has become full of deep 3-pointers, uncontested dunks and almost zero defense. Now, we are seeing a record pace of 3-pointers made, missed and taken in general, all while a lack of defense has become apparent.

This year, the NBA All-Star Game will be a four-team tournament the league hopes will add some competitive juice.

LeBron James admitted “the last couple of years have not been a great All-Star Game,” but he knows the NBA faces bigger issues, and the 3-pointer might be largely to blame.

CELTICS HEAD COACH ADMITS HE’D ‘RATHER WATCH SOMETHING ELSE’ AS NBA RATINGS DECLINE

“Listen, it’s a bigger conversation. It’s not just the All-Star Game, it’s our game in general. Our game, there’s a lot of f—ing threes being shot. So it’s a bigger conversation than just the All-Star Game,” James said Thursday.

James is averaging 5.7 3-pointers attempted per game; his career-high is eight from the 2021-22 season. He added that “something had to change” regarding the All-Star Game.

“I was not part of the committee. It’s different, but I don’t know. We’ll see. We’ll see when we get there. It’s different. Obviously, any time you make some type of change, there’s gonna be some [blowback]. I don’t know. I have my ideas of what could possibly work, but I’m not gonna do that. We gotta do something.”

One passenger, Hilary Stewart Blazevic, told Storyful that a woman used the restroom prior to the leak and didn’t inform the crew of any issues.

Flight attendants rushed to the scene attempting to stop the leak, according to a video recorded by Blazevic.

Lori Loughlin praises law enforcement 5 years after college admissions scandal

0

Lori Loughlin is praising law enforcement five years after her involvement in the infamous college admissions scandal.

During a recent interview, the “Full House” alum, who stars in the upcoming Prime Video series “On Call,” opened up about how her role as Lieutenant Bishop gave her a whole new outlook.

“It was really exciting and gave me a whole new appreciation for law enforcement,” Loughlin told Entertainment Tonight.

Not only did Loughlin’s role require a hefty amount of time mentally preparing with “ride-a-longs” with real police officers, it required a physical transformation as well.

“I was game for anything. Like when I first showed up, they were like, ‘Your highlights are going to go,’and I was like, ‘Fine.’ No makeup, dark hair pulled back, uniform and just [a] very raw [look] and I jumped at the chance. I was so excited.”

“I didn’t know I had it in me — to be that bada–,” she added.

This marks Loughlin’s first major role since being arrested for her involvement in the college admissions scandal in 2019.

In one of her first major interviews since the infamous scandal, the “Full House” alum spoke with First For Women in April about forgiveness and moving forward.

“Every day, we’re met with different obstacles. But, for me, it’s like that song says, ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again,’” she said in the outlet’s cover story. “Nobody said life was going to be a breeze; we all make mistakes, but the important thing is to persevere.”

“For me, it’s just persevering and, as an actress, I hear ‘no’ a lot, so I just have to be myself and persevere and try not to let in negativity,” she continued. “My advice is to just keep moving forward. Everyone has good times and bad times. That’s life. I think you just have to pick yourself up. Nobody said life was going to be a breeze. There’s beauty in life, but there’s also hardship in life.”

While she did not directly address the scandal, she spoke about asking for forgiveness.

“Actually, I try to be a forgiving person. I’m not one to hold onto stuff. Stuff happens to everyone. We’ve all been in positions to ask for forgiveness but to ask for it, you have to learn and know how to give forgiveness, too,” Loughlin said.

“My family wasn’t one to hold grudges. I didn’t grow up in a household where if you made a mistake, you weren’t forgiven,” she continued. “No one is perfect, we all make mistakes. So I was always told to let stuff go. And I think for your own health, you have to let things go because you can’t hang on to negativity. Life’s too short.”

In 2020, Loughlin served two months in prison, completed 150 hours of community service and paid a $150,000 fine after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges stemming from making payments to William “Rick” Singer, the mastermind of the scam, to get her daughters, Isabella and Olivia Jade, into the University of Southern California.
