Malaysia agrees to resume ‘no find, no fee’ hunt for flight MH370, 10 years after plane disappeared

0

Malaysia’s government has agreed in principle to accept a second “no find, no fee” proposal from a U.S. company to renew the hunt for flight MH370, which is believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean more than 10 years ago, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Friday.

Loke said Cabinet ministers gave the nod at their meeting last week for Texas-based marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity to continue the seabed search operation at a new 15,000-square-kilometer (5,800-square-mile) site in the ocean next year.

MALAYSIA ANNOUNCES RENEWED PUSH TO FIND MH370 DECADE AFTER DISAPPEARANCE: ‘SEARCH MUST GO ON’

“The proposed new search area, identified by Ocean Infinity, is based on the latest information and data analyses conducted by experts and researchers. The company’s proposal is credible,” he said in a statement.

The Boeing 777 plane vanished from radar shortly after taking off on March 8, 2014, carrying 239 people, mostly Chinese nationals, on a flight from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing. Satellite data showed the plane deviated from its flight path to head over the southern Indian Ocean, where it is believed to have crashed.

An expensive multinational search failed to turn up any clues, although debris washed ashore on the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands. A private search in 2018 by Ocean Infinity also found nothing.

Under the new deal, Ocean Infinity will get $70 million only if significant wreckage is discovered, Loke said. He said his ministry will finalize negotiations with Ocean Infinity in early 2025. The firm has indicated that January-April is the best period for the search, he said.

“This decision reflects the government’s commitment to continuing the search operation and providing closure for the families of MH370 passengers,” he added.

Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Punkett earlier this year reportedly said the the company had improved its technology since 2018. He has said the firm is working with many experts to analyze data and narrow the search area to the most likely site.

The 34 House Republicans who voted against a bill to avert a partial government shutdown

0

Over 30 House Republicans voted Friday against a bill to avert a partial government shutdown.

Lawmakers scrambled to reach consensus on a spending package ahead of the looming partial government shutdown deadline Friday. An initial 1,547-page bipartisan deal that would have extended the government funding deadline until March 14 was released Tuesday night, but the proposal crumbled after Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy criticized the spending bill.

A more condensed, Trump-backed version was brought to the floor Thursday night but failed to pass.

In a last-minute vote Friday, the House succeeded in passing a funding bill with 34 Republicans voting against the legislation and zero Democrats voting against it. One Democrat, Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, voted present.

Here’s what’s different in the new spending legislation approved by the House

0

House lawmakers voted Friday to approve a newly negotiated spending bill that included many of the same components of the earlier legislation — but without the debt limit provision that had sparked consternation among many in the party.

Republican leaders shared the text late Friday, shortly before lawmakers approved the spending legislation, 366-34.

Lawmakers were scrambling for a path forward after an initial bill was tanked by President-elect Trump and his allies on Wednesday, and a later bill approved by Trump failed on the House floor Thursday.

HOUSE PASSES SPENDING BILL TO AVERT GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

The bill, unlike the version rejected Thursday night, removes a debt limit extension sought by President-elect Donald Trump, which would have included a two-year suspension of the debt limit.

That version failed to garner support among Democrats, who were more broadly opposed to the idea, and from fiscal conservatives within the Republican Party.

The new legislation includes provisions such as $10 billion in aid to farmers and agriculture subsidies included in the earlier version of the bill — which were considered must-pass provisions by many lawmakers.

It also includes $100 billion in disaster aid for U.S. residents, including victims of devastating hurricanes in some U.S. states.

“We will not have a government shutdown, and we will meet our obligations for our farmers who need aid, for the disaster victims all over the country, and for making sure that military and essential services, and everyone who relies upon the federal government for a paycheck is paid over the holidays,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters before Friday’s vote.

Chilling Google searches lead police to arrest active-duty Marine in alleged murder of escort

0

An active-duty Marine was recently arrested after Google searches led Florida investigators to suspect he murdered a reality TV star and dumped her body in an Alabama pond.

Willie Ellington, 20, who was stationed onboard the Naval Air Station Pensacola, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder and possession of child pornography, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Tshey Ronaie Bennett, 26, who was last seen meeting Ellington at the Sweet Dream Inn, was reported missing Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities identified Bennett as an “escort,” but did not elaborate on the purpose of the meet-up.

Bennett appeared on the first season of HollyHoodTV’s series “Skrippa Bootcamp,” which premiered earlier this year, according to her Facebook biography.

The show centered around a dozen “aspiring and elite dancers” living together while working to perfect their craft, according to the show’s website.

Due to the “suspicious circumstances” surrounding her disappearance, investigators worked the case as a potential homicide, authorities said.

Bennett’s car and phone remained at the inn, but the bedding was missing, according to a report from Military.com.

Her body was found Wednesday inside a pond in an abandoned neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama, according to the sheriff’s office.

The report noted Ellington attempted to skip town via bus and had Google searches on his phone “pertaining to ‘can someone scream when they’re strangled? What is the statistic of prostitutes homicides being solved …’ and ‘How does a dead body look in two days?'”

The sheriff’s office has not publicly commented on Bennett’s cause of death, as of Thursday afternoon.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.

Ohio funeral home applies for liquor license

0

The owner of an Ohio funeral home that recently applied for a liquor license said the move has sparked conversation among funeral industry insiders as they look to make their venues more personable to family and friends of the deceased.

Hunter Triplett, owner and CEO of Evergreen Funeral, Cremation and Reception in Columbus, Ohio, told Fox News Digital that he grew up in the cemetery business and was exposed to a variety of funeral homes over the years.

One thing he kept noticing was that people would often go from a funeral or memorial service to a bar, restaurant or event space to continue honoring their loved one.

BREWERIES AND THEIR TARGET AUDIENCE: SOCIAL MEDIA USERS DEBATE THE HOT ISSUE

“The idea of the liquor license is so that we can have a champagne (toast) on behalf of a loved one, as well as, you know, if somebody had a signature cocktail that they were always seen with,” said Triplett.

Evergreen Funeral, Cremation and Reception, set to open in 2025, is in the location of a former chocolate factory, Triplett told Fox News Digital. He said there is “ample space” within the building for a reception following a memorial service.

“The idea was just to stand out among the other funeral homes in the area by offering services like this,” he continued.

The facility also has a “robust” kitchen, meaning that catering for funeral receptions will also be available.

“It’s a reception center within a funeral home,” he said.

“I think you have to follow what the consumer says.”

Speaking to families of the recently deceased, Triplett found that “a lot of them like the celebration of life. They like the humanistic aspects of the way the funeral service is going,” he said.

“And I think you have to follow what the consumer says.”

SOME TYPES OF COCOA PLUS GREEN TEA MAY OFFER SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS

He said the response to the media attention regarding his liquor license application has been largely positive, both from residents of central Ohio and others in the funeral industry.

“Other funeral professionals have asked me, ‘How can I do the same that you are?'” Triplett told Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital reached out to the National Funeral Directors Association seeking comment.

Some other funeral homes said they’ve had success making alcohol available to grieving family members and friends.

“It’s not a shot and a beer. It’s an enhancement.”

Jon Kolssak, owner of Kolssak Funeral Home in Wheeling, Illinois, north of Chicago, told Fox News Digital he’s recently started doing mimosa memorials at the request of customers.

“It’s not about focusing on the alcohol being served,” Kolssak said. “It’s about celebrating a life well-lived.”

Kolssak’s bar can be moved, and a catering company handles the beverages so he and his team can focus on what they do best.

“It’s not a shot and a beer,” Kolssak said. “It’s an enhancement.”

Triplett also pointed out that the idea is not to turn the funeral home into a bar.

“So there is a funeral service and a memorial service. Funeral services are where the body is present, and a memorial service is where it’s not,” he said.

“A lot of families are less comfortable with [an] open casket and a lot of them have an urn up at the front and say a kind of final word.”

It would be this sort of more casual environment where the bar would be available, he said.

Alcohol will not be available, however, if a family opts to do a series of events in different locations, such as a visitation, a funeral and then a burial.

One funeral home owner said other funeral industry professionals have reached out to him to inquire about getting their own liquor licenses.  (iStock)

“We won’t offer [alcohol service] because people will be driving from one facility to another,” he said.

“The only time it will be offered is when the services that are provided stay at this facility and only on [these] premises until the end.”

Families can also opt against alcohol service if they do not want to have it at a memorial, Triplett said.

“The bar is on wheels,” he said. “We can roll it away if somebody is uncomfortable with it.”

Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and founder of the Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio, told Fox News Digital that “it’s not the norm” to be offered alcohol at a funeral home – and it comes with the risk of suggesting a bar or party atmosphere.

“Having an open bar at a funeral home sets a different tone.”

“Having an open bar at a funeral home sets a different tone,” she said.

Triplett stressed that it’s a traditional funeral home.

“We’re just offering food and drink services that enhance and help the personalization aspect of a funeral service,” he said.

Evergreen Funeral, Cremation and Reception has not yet been approved for a liquor license, according to the Ohio Liquor Control’s permit database.

Three other Ohio funeral homes, which also have on-site event space for receptions, have been previously granted liquor licenses, per the Ohio Liquor Control’s database.

Vikings’ Daniel Jones gives former Giants teammates Christmas gifts despite being released: report

0

Daniel Jones is no longer with the New York Giants, but that didn’t stop him from getting in the Christmas spirit with his former teammates.

Jones, currently a member of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, sent all the offensive lineman that were on the Giants with him a limited-edition bottle of Clase Azul tequila for Christmas, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

Jones, 27, was benched after the Giants’ bye week and then asked for his release so he could sign with a contender for the rest of the season.

Jones was beloved by his Giants teammates in New York, many taking to social media to express their support for their former quarterback when he was released.

The Vikings signed Jones to their practice squad shortly after, giving Jones a chance to develop under head coach Kevin O’Connell.

It is commonplace for quarterbacks in the NFL to buy their offensive lineman gifts for Christmas as a thank-you for blocking for them.

‘Wheel of Fortune’ fans poke fun at contestant’s incorrect Christmas answer

0

Social media is buzzing about a recent mistake on “Wheel of Fortune.”

A Christmas-themed episode of the popular game show on Tuesday featured the latest contestant blunder. When trying to solve a puzzle in the “Same Letter” category, contestant Phil McManus was faced with a board reading, “Chocolate Chestnuts & Chi_ne_s.”

McManus started out strongly, filling in all but two of the letters, and after buying an “I,” he only had two letters left to solve the puzzle. He then guessed, “Chocolates, chestnuts and chickens,” which was incorrect.

The wrong guess made room for another contestant, Matt, to correctly guess “Chocolates, chestnuts & chimneys” as the correct answer.

‘WHEEL OF FORTUNE’ CONTESTANT LOSES OUT ON $1 MILLION PRIZE BY MISSING ONE WORD

Fans of the show quickly took to social media to share their reactions to the guess.

“That was my shopping list last weekend,” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “When I think of chocolates and chestnuts, the next word I think of is chickens,” another user wrote.

“Did that man look at that puzzle and say Chocolate, Chestnuts and Chickens??? For a Christmas puzzle?!? #wof #wheelofFortune,” a third user wrote.

This isn’t the first time a contestant has caused fans on social media to poke fun at a wrong answer. In November, Will Jordan, a veteran police officer and former coast guard from Connecticut, incorrectly guessed the puzzle, “Treat yourself a round of sausage,” when the correct answer was “Give yourself a round of applause.”

But Reed’s teammate, Ron Holland II, took exception and stepped up to Clarkson. Clarkson pushed Holland, and the two squared up but were separated before either could throw punches.

However, that did not stop referees from ejecting them both from the game.

Fox News Poll: Voters view 2024 negatively but have hope for the future

0

The 2024 presidential election dominated the news cycle this year and not only are a majority of voters feeling hopeful about the outcome, but they are also increasingly hopeful for the future of the country. And while half feel it was a bad year, the number saying it was good is the highest it has been since 2020 (at the end of the first year of the pandemic).

When it comes to the future of the country, 55% are extremely or very hopeful for what’s ahead. That is up 2 points since 2022. Between 2021 and 2022, optimism about the country’s future increased by 10 points. The question was not asked in 2023.

Overall, 45% are not very or not at all hopeful.

FOX NEWS POLL: VOTERS FEEL HOPEFUL POST-ELECTION, WANT TRUMP TO FOCUS ON INFLATION

The current numbers are driven by partisan divides — overwhelming majorities of Republicans are hopeful for the future of the country (86%), while majorities of Democrats (72%) and Independents (54%) are not.

In 2021, things were reversed among the partisans, although to a lesser degree, with 6 in 10 Democrats saying they were hopeful, while 7 in 10 Republicans and 6 in 10 Independents saying they were not.

“Since the 1990s, attitudes toward the future are strongly correlated with partisanship,” says Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who conducts the Fox News Poll with Democrat Chris Anderson. “Even so, there’s more general optimism this year than we’ve seen in a while, as the fear and rancor of the past few years seems to be waning.”

Looking back on 2024, 4 in 10 (40%) say it was a good year for their family, while half (50%) say it was a bad year for a net rating of -10. That’s an improvement from -14 last year (39% good, 53% bad) and substantially better than in 2020, when it was underwater by 44 points (23% good, 67% bad). From 2012 to 2019, more voters felt positive about their year than negative.

FOX NEWS POLL: NEGATIVE ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL RATINGS FOR BIDEN AS HE EXITS

By a 36-point margin, voters say 2024 was a bad year for America overall (28% good vs. 64% bad), but that’s better than 2020’s 65-point net negative rating (13% good, 78% bad). Since 2018, when the question was first asked, views on the country’s end-of-year report card have been in a deficit.

Democrats (50% their family, 42% the country) are more likely than Republicans (34%, 19%) and Independents (33%, 21%) to feel 2024 was a good year for them and the country.

NEW NATIONAL POLL REVEALS APPROVAL RATINGS FOR BIDEN, TRUMP AMIDST TRANSITION

Another hopeful note…

Half of voters say “hopeful” describes how they feel about the 2024 presidential results (54%) — the highest of any other feeling including relieved (50%), surprised (50%), excited (48%), scared (46%), depressed (40%), and angry (39%).
