Nollywood actress, Rachel Oniga dies

According to popular Nigerian media personality, Seun Oloketuyi via his Instagram platform, the movie star who has featured in hundreds of movies passed on at the early hours of today, Saturday, July 31.

The family, however, revealed the true cause of her death in a statement titled, ‘An official statement on the passing of Chief Rachel Tabuno Oniga,’ signed by her sister, Toyin Odusote.

The statement reads, “With a heavy heart and total submission to God, we write to announce the passing unto glory of our beloved sister, mother and grandmother; Chief Rachel Tabuno Oniga.

“She died from a heart-related issue; an ailment she battled with for a short period before her demise in a Lagos hospital at the age of 64, on Friday, 30th of July 2021, at 10pm.

She is Originally from Eku, Delta State in Southern Nigeria, Rachel Oniga was born on 23 May 1957 in Ebutte Metta, Lagos State.


She began her acting career in 1993, shortly after her divorce. She worked briefly at Ascoline Nigeria Limited, a Dutch Consultant Company before her first movie titled Onome and her debut Yoruba movie was Owo Blow. Over the years, Oniga has featured in notable Nigerian films such as Sango, a movie scripted by Wale Ogunyemi, produced and directed by Obafemi Lasode  and Wale Adenuga’s television series, Super story.
