NLC asks Buhari to raise salaries by 50 percent

In light of “the realities on the ground,” the Nigeria Labour Congress has requested that the federal government take a 50 percent compensation review into consideration.

According to reports, the letter, dated August 8, is a response to the economic recommendations made by state governors.

Recall that among other recommendations, Governors had pressed for the abolition of the fuel subsidy, the retirement of public employees at the age of 50, and the scaling back of National Assembly constituency projects.

The NLC criticized Governors for wanting to force workers into early retirement and emphasized that anyone advocating for this “should be treated as adversaries of your government.”

The union requested that the Buhari-led administration think on raising worker salaries rather than considering early retirement.

a portion of the letter signed by NLC President Ayuba Wabba read;

“While we commend you for your thoughtfulness for a wage increase, truth of the matter is that given the misfortune that has befallen the Nigerian populace, especially workers with fixed incomes, there is an urgent need for a massive intervention much deeper than the 22 percent.

“We would recommend a 50 percent salary review across the board given the realities on ground.”
