NCDC cautions Nigerians about increasing cases of monkey pox

Nigerians have been put on a monkeypox high alert by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control.

This came after Director-General of NCDC. Ifedayo Adetifa revealed that the health agency has noticed an increase in monkeypox cases in the country.

Adetifa who during a virtual media dialogue on monkeypox on Tuesday June 28, cautioned that assuming the current trajectory proceeds, Nigeria could match or surpass the number of cases seen in 2017 when monkeypox reappeared.

He likewise uncovered that since January 1, several countries had been impacted by an exceptional outbreak of monkeypox, leading to over 3,000 research facility affirmed and one death from the virus as of June 22.

The NCDC DG also said the overarching media perception and misinformation on monkeypox had fuelled misleading narratives about the virus, adding that the potential risk of discrimination and stigmatisation from this requires urgent social and behavior change intervention.
