The Nigeria Police Force has sacked Richard Gele, a police inspector who was shown in a trending video on July 25 defending and excusing official corruption and the extortion of members of the public.

The Inspector with AP/No. 188547, who was employed by Police Mobile Force 77 Squadron in Okene, Kogi State, up to his discharge, was sent to the Itobe-Anyigba Road to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers on that stretch of road.

The Inspector who was fired comes from the state of Benue and joined the Force in September 2000. After going through an internal disciplinary process and being found not guilty of the allegations brought against him in accordance with the statutes currently in effect governing the conduct of police personnel, he was fired.

According to a statement made by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi:

”He therefore ceases to be a member of the Nigeria Police Force with immediate effect. The officer has been de-kitted and handed over to the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State, for further necessary action.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, while expressing the staunch commitment of his administration at bequeathing policing standards in tandem with international best practices to the nation, warned all personnel to eschew extortion, unprofessionalism, official corruption and other inappropriate acts. The IGP urged them to display exemplary courage and patriotism in the discharge of their duties.”
